Cam Newton Q&A with SI

First, some full disclosure, even though it makes me look like a dope. I interviewed Cam Newton a few weeks ago and he was extremely nice and I thought the Q&A was very entertaining. However, when I went to transcribe the conversation, I only heard my hideous voice on the tape. Yes, I set up the recorder incorrectly. However, Newton was nice enough to answer a few light-hearted questions via e-mail.

SI.com: If you could meet any celebrity, who would it be?

Newton: Oprah Winfrey.

SI.com: Song you’d sing at karaoke?

Newton: “You are the Sunshine of my Life” by Steve Wonder.

SI.com: Song on your iPod you’re ashamed of.

Newton: “Lion King” theme song (“Circle of Life”).

SI.com: Best boy band of all time?

Newton: Boyz II Men.

SI.com: TV shows you DVR?

Newton: “Duck Dynasty.”

SI.com: Favorite TV character of all time?

Newton: Martin.

SI.com: Movie you’ve seen the most?

Newton: “Coming to America.”

SI.com: Fashion tip for men?

Newton: Stay neat, wear ties even with casual look. Looking sharp impresses those who matter most.

SI.com: Fashion don’t for men?

Newton: I don’t necessarily believe in dont’s. If you have confidence in your vision, anything is possible.

SI.com: First few websites you check after logging onto the Internet?

Newton: CNN.com, SI.com, SoleCollector.com, Youtube.com, CamNewtonFoundation.org.

SI.com: Biggest pet peeves?

Newton: People who say they will do something but don’t follow through.

SI.com: Most annoying question reporters ask you?

Newton: Any leading question where it is clear they already have their own answer in mind.

SI.com: Game day superstitions?

Newton: No superstitions, but I do make a new playlist for every game.

SI.com: Do you have any fears/phobias?

Newton: Not that I am aware of.

SI.com: If you could trade places with one athlete, who would it be?

Newton: I wouldn’t trade with anyone, but I do have an enormous amount of respect for LeBron James.

SI.com: Funniest athlete you know?

Newton: Panthers offensive lineman Jordan Gross.

SI.com: Best perk of being an athlete?

Newton: Being able to make a positive difference in other people’s lives.

SI.com: Secret Passion?

Newton: I love taking photos. I use my Windows Phone to take photos of my daily activities and just about every place that I visit.

    • Coker has certainly earned it. Good for him.
    • I don't think we don't call things aggressively, for a Canales offense, anyway. We don't have a QB who makes aggressive throws nor stresses defenses downfield. He is at a career low on 20+ attempts per game and his career 10-20 QB rating is abysmal.  That will always be a limiting factor IF you are looking for a high flying, downfield offense. I am not even that concerned about it, I just want to see effective offense and we decidedly do not possess that. A large chunk of that is Bryce. I think the second biggest chunk is Canales. All the other components(XL included) are fairly minor in comparison to those two things. I am an advocate of attempting to improve at QB. I am not focused on finding "The QB." We failed at that with Bryce. So let's just get better. If that's a one year vet or a draftee or a cheap trade or some combination of any/all, we should do that. We have to get that QB better. Bryce will fail in 2026 and we need to have REALISTIC options to take over when that happens. That ain't Andy Dalton or Hendon Hooker or Jack Plummer or Mike White or....you get the picture. Be serious about hedging that Bryce bet and not just having to make do if he struggles or gets injured.  My mind is definitely made up on Canales. It's year two and he hasn't improved much, nor do I think the bones of a good HC are there. Ron Rivera got to that point after two seasons and he was open about the changes he had to make and advice he got to make that leap in year 3. If we don't see the same after next year, how is he not just Brian Daboll?
    • Not really buying it because T-mac faces stiffer competition week in and week out.
