If you're talking about pure wow workout numbers, overall I'd say RB, LB, and S are probably universally the best speed/strength combination athletes.  But, then you have some freak DEs like Peppers and Mario Williams you'd have to consider and some TEs like Vernon Davis who would also be in the conversation, not to mention WRs like Calvin Johnson.  Lots of freak athletes in the NFL and they're pretty much spread across all positions.  There's just so many different types of athleticism.  Who's the most athletic, the fastest?  The strongest?  The quickest?  The guy who can jump the highest?  Like I said, if you were to take a sampling of all the positions in the NFL, I think RB, LB, and S would probably be at the top of the heap as far as overall athleticism.

Boxers may be in good shape, that does not mean however that they are good athletes. I wouldn't pick Tyson for any team sport, and he was one of the most devastating boxers ever.

I will agree that Basketball players are very good athletes. I just think the physicality of Football puts it on another level. You not only have to be athletic, you must be physically willing and able to take on players who are usually much bigger than you.

Basketball has some amazing athletes, but it's not necessarily a prerequisite.  Hell, Kevin Durant is a great player and looks like a great athlete on the court but he tested out as a terrible athlete in NBA terms at the combine.

"According to the newspaper, the report said Durant was ranked 78th out of 80 NBA prospects who worked out at Orlando, while Ohio State center Greg Oden had an impressive workout."

Linebackers are most definitely doing everything on the field whether it be tackling or covering. Of all the positions, that one requires the most consistency in every area of football. About the only thing they dont do well, usually, is run with the ball. Every time it happens its like a kid running around with an ice cream cone. . .

Its crazy that they seem awkward sometimes when they get an interception, carrying it around like its loaf of bread. That cracks me up. Its like theyre not concerned about anyone knocking it out of their hands like "yeah so what, I dare you to take it. . . I will pound you in the face!"

i think people are voting cb because they think "oh, they're fast and quick." of course they are, they're also the smallest and weakest.

the fact that DEs and LBs can do the things they do at their freakish size and weight is unbelievable.

you also have to remember that cbs arguably have the toughest match ups in the game. Take the best WR and CB....Calvin Johnson and Darelle Revis. CJ is taller, faster, stronger, has a bigger vertcle and the ability to change direction must be minimal between both of them. Then you factor in that CB are the least protected position in the NFL and possibly all team sports. For a regular nfl CB to try and cover someone built like CJ and to do it well in todays NFL is extraordinary.

right, but we're not talking about which position is the hardest to play. we're talking who is the most athletic.

Cornerbacks require almost all athletic attributes other than strength.......just about every other position in the nFL is filled with guys who arent that athletic but when it comes do CBs they almost all have to have a high degree of athleticism. Basically what im saying is that the athletic attributes of a cb translates more to their position than any other i.e their combine results will tell you more about their ability to play the position than any other.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
