Luke Kuechly - LB - Carolina Panthers

Luke Kuechly was selected with the 9th overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft and was the first linebacker selected. A rare three down linebacker, he was chosen by the Panthers to improve their 28th ranked defense. Originally, Kuechly was expected to start at outside linebacker while Jon Beason played in the middle. Beason then tore his achilles in week 4 and was put on IR, opening the door for Kuechly to have one of the best rookie seasons of any inside linebacker.
Kuechly racked up double-digit tackles in 10 games, with 9 of them coming after week 4 when he took Beason's spot.

Due to his great play as a rookie, Kuechly went on to win NFC Defensive Rookie of the Week after a 16 tackle performance against the Falcons and then NFC Defensive Rookie of the Month in December after posting a league-high 59 tackles in 5 games. Finally, Kuechly received the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year award while helping improve his defense from 28th to 10th and leading the league in tackles with 164, outpacing the next highest total by 16. Looking forward, Kuechly should only get better, along with his defense, as he solidifies his place as one of the league's top young defenders.

Cam Newton - QB - Carolina Panthers

After an amazing season at Auburn where he scored 50 touchdowns and won the Heisman Trophy, Cam Newton was drafted 1st overall by the Carolina Panthers in 2011. He was expected to bring an offensive spark to the worst offense in the league. He was able to do that and more. Cam Newton was able to score 35 total touchdowns in his rookie year (21 passing and 14 rushing) on his way to the Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Many people expected Newton to hit the Sophomore Slump in 2012. During the first half it looked like it was true when the entire offense struggled to 2-8 record. Cam Newton's leadership and maturity were called into question as the Panthers struggled. However, Newton was able to silence all the critics winning 5 of his last 6 games of the season and playing as well as any other quarterback to lead the Panthers to a respectable tie for second in the NFC South. There was also very little drop in his production from his rookie campaign with 6 fewer rushing touchdowns but he also had 5 fewer interceptions.

People are already hating on Cam and Keek in the comments.

Kuechly has one of the lowest snaps per tackle of any linebacker in the league. He is a huge impact player. Not to take anything away from David, Kuechly was a big deal for the defense he played with.

I disagree with you on Kuechly. He was actually better than the average ILB by leaps and bounds in run D. I don't really care about tackles, but he had 58 stops in the run game, tied for 5th. The thing is, he had about 300 snaps less than all of the other guys on the list (except Bobby Wagner and Derrick Johnson, who I think we can both agree should have been higher than they were).

Hate from other team's fans

Steve Smith – WR - Carolina Panthers

Smith has been a top level WR his entire career. What he lacks is size he makes up for with physicality. No one stiff-arms like Steve Smith. He has been the go-to weapon for every QB to play for the panthers for most of the last decade, but even more so the last two seasons with Cam Newton at QB.

"Megatron was impossible to cover. Randy Moss in his prime: nothing you can do. But to me, Steve Smith was the toughest guy I faced. When I played him, he was just like me. He chose to outwork everyone else out there every day." - Ronde Barber

yea. i actualy thought some of the negative things said about kuechly were correct.

he needs to work on pass coverage but he is an absolute stud against the run. But people reiterated he was just a rookie, which almost always happens. The comments that were most ridiculous were when fans were championing their rookies against keek.

But everybody knows kuechly is the second coming if he keeps this up.

What's even scarier than Keek hopefully (touch wood) playing a full 16 games at MLB is having players like Star and KK in front of him. Remember when KC traded for Alex Smith and tagged LT Albert, a few draft experts were pegging Star as the #1 overall pick.

Fua and McClain were both draft reaches even going in the rounds they did, these guys are legit 1st round talents at DT.

Add a healthy Beason and Davis with a year under his belt and folks better watch out. Even have a little depth with Chase (dudes built like an OL) and Klein.

    • The thing with cleaning house… who the hell wants to actually work for Tepper?! What good coach with options would take that gig? There are literally 31  better teams to work for…. This is the WORST place for a coach to work… and it’s not even close. Auto-firing staff after 1-2 years will only make things worse.  If candidates know they are going to be auto-fired when being dumped in to an impossible situation, then why even apply? Tepp has to show candidates that he’s calmed the f down. The best thing is for him to not make any major franchise decisions for a while.  Just imagine where we would be right now with Wilks, Darnold, Foreman, Luvu, Moore,  the king’s ransom they were offered for Burns and the picks they traded away for Young… tell me with a straight face that blowing all of that up was the right move compared to where we are today. Wilks and Darnold were bridges to a better place.  My point being, EVERY major franchise decision from Tepp has been a disaster. He blows everything up, even if it shows signs of potential. He has refused to hire a ‘my way or no way’ type coach with proven NFL success.  I promise you he doesn’t have a friend in the entire building.  besides changing out Evero who has been given years to make it work, this is the best case scenario for the foreseeable future until the next draft. I don’t think Canales is the right coach for the job, but tying him to Young isn’t fair. He deserves at least another season with his own guy that he chooses.
    • Yeah, he did. But what absolutely killed any chance of success is that our QB panicked and sailed the ball through the endzone uncatchable. That's why the focus is on that. Why do we need to do all these mental gymnastics to keep trying to come up with excuses to cover for the worst starting QB in the NFL over the past three years? What else do we kneed to see from him to admit he ain't ir? You don't trade up to #1 overall to draft a QB that needs everything to go perfectly to succeed. You're doing that because you think you're drafting a guy who can carry an offense.
    • He needed another year as DC to get the team a draft pick. Had they let him walk before this season the Panthers get nothing. The irony is that they will get nothing anyway as no team will hire him as a HC. I'm not sure he could get another DC job at this point.
