ITT we discuss the offensive line

we're not fugged. gross and kalil were decent, silatolu couldn't been better but had a number of great run-blocking plays, and the right side of the line was as sketchy as advertised. we need to look at other options on the right side of the line at guard (which will make tackle look better as a result) and we should be ok.

nothing we didn't already know.

Agreed except Silatolu was a mixed bag.  He had some awful awful awful misses.  I recall at least two blown up minus yard runs by Dwill caused by Silatolu.

So you don't think he is better than Garry Williams, Chris Scott, Brian Folkerts, Jeff Byers, Garrett Chisholm, Hayworth Hicks, Tori Mobely, Justin Wells, Patrick Brown or Nate Chandler?

Hard to say right now.  Would have been nice to give him a look earlier.  Maybe we still should.

What exactly does that have to do with the fact he sucks?

I looked at this line tonight, and it was insane to see so many Eagle defensive linemen were in our backfield, or just being able to get their arms around our backs as they came through the line.  I know our line is bad, but that was a horror movie out there tonight.  There's no way an NFL offensive line (no matter who's playing) should play that badly.  So I have to think that something else might be wrong here.  Then I think about the Peyton Mannings and the Tom Bradys of the world, and how they are very vocal at the line of scrimmage.  Pointing out the line's assignments, and even checking out of plays.  I have to wonder if Cam is doing the same here, or is he just going up to the line and hitting that go button no matter what the defense looks like.

We just need to pick up a vet RG after the cut to 53 and we'll be fine.

Both guard positions looked shaky.  However I think it's more of a preparation thing like P55 said.  The thing that concerns me most is that we never gel early.   We cannot afford a slow start this year.

My 2 cents:

We are a gross or Kalil injury away from a complete meltdown. Oline men get dinged up in the season so I would say there is a strong possibility that either of these guys could miss time.

The problem with the line is two fold:

1. Garry Williams is a reserve guard at beat, Silitolu is a 2nd year project, and Byron Bell has all the potential of a journeyman backup tackle.

2. The sad part is that even with how mediocre to bad those three guys are, we have no one on the roster that is remotely close to pushing them for their jobs.

Tl;dr version: we be fugged

Guys, I am just going to break the news to you.

The offensive line you get now for the most part is the offensive line you are going to get.  Signing anyone mediocre or below right now serves no purpose.  Lets be legit.  We aren't a Super Bowl contender and even if we were, signing someone like Wharton isn't going to make the difference in that.  We are a young team on the rise with playoff potential.  Just save the money, even if it isn't a bunch, and use it towards re-signing Hardy or extending Newton or bringing in a top flight guy in free agency.

Aspirations to signing Travelle Wharton are in my opinion pointless.  He isn't going to make that much of a difference, if any.  He was bad at best in 2011 and that was before a season ending injury.  What do people think he will truly offer us right now at age 32?

    • I will as soon as you withdraw your fandom from the Patriots. Informative threads are great but all of these estrogen and emotion driven threads you start are ridiculous.
    • Will be there tonight and expect nothing from the Canes. They are soft and won't go after anyone, nor will they respond when, not if, Florida starts bullying them. Not to mention Freddie is in net. I fear this will be an ass-kicking.
    • Is this not a bit contradictory?  Also surely if any of us are smart enough to evaluate what we're seeing in real time, a former NFL QB can at least manage the same.  Especially considering he's basing his analysis on hours (maybe generous?) of reviewing All-22 footage which he can play back over and over again, focusing each time on different position groups, match-ups, progressions, etc. which is simply impossible for a fan to fully assess in real time.  Unless you're actually at the game, we basically only get the QB/O-line in frame during the broadcast and even in that limited window of the field, there is simply too much happening.  I'm usually broadly focusing on Bryce, maybe peeping the footwork (or lack thereof) and just the overall pocket and whether there is any pressure coming.  I'm not able to watch every individual one-on-one o-line match-up on top of it to see who got beat, who didn't pick up a blitz, which o-lineman didn't shift to help double-team, or whatever else. I think the truth is somewhere in between (as is almost always the case).  Knowing the play call, audible, etc. is pretty important when judging individual performances, which is why we should always take PFF grades with a grain of salt.  But yeah we can also get a pretty good overall sense of how a player is performing just from watching the game on the couch on Sundays.  I still think there's a lot of value in a review video like this.  As long as you have the bare minimum media literacy to take the interesting insights while also acknowledging inherent biases from a video like this (i.e. obviously focusing on the good over the bad).
