Gettis is very much in play for the WR3 spot per Joe Person

Getting tired of David Gettis threads yet?  Well too bad if you are because he is really the hottest thing burning in Panther Land these days. He is earning every bit of his praise with his consistently good play. And, frankly, there is no reason to believe he will fall off.  Joe Person says: "After another strong showing, David Gettis firmly in mix for Carolina Panthers’ No. 3 receiver spot".

“I’m very excited for David. He stepped up and played a very good football game, and I told the players I thought it was a very inspirational effort he gave,” Panthers coach Ron Rivera said. “Some guys can learn from guys who are playing hard and doing their best to make this football team.”

Gettis, who turns 26 this month, has been the Panthers’ leading receiver in both of their exhibitions. He’s yet to catch a pass from Cam Newton, although that could change.

Asked if Gettis’ play was putting pressure on Hixon, Rivera said: “It’s putting a lot of pressure on a lot of guys.”

Let it also be known that Person also said that Hixon is "on the clock".

Like I basically said last week: You may be able to keep a job while on the mend, but you certainly can't win a job while on the bench.  You certainly aren't going to win one with the likes of David Gettis showing the hunger and desire to do what it takes not only to land a roster spot, but win a starting spot.

Gettis is making a strong statement with his play. Read between the lines, and Rivera is making a strong statement also.

See but that's the thing that has always pissed me off about our approach. What happened to earning a spot for every position? There's only a handful of guys a year who should have their spot guaranteed. For some reason, we've done the opposite. Almost every spot is designated before the season starts and only one or two are really open for competition.

Hixon hasn't done poo for this team! And again, his career best was only as good as Gettis' rookie season, yet, he's sat on his ass up to this point through preseason and fully expected to be given his spot. That pisses me off, and I suspected that was his mindset b/c why else would a guy on the fringe just continually be comfortable in sitting out this long?

I'm almost willing to put money down on him playing this week, now.

Gettis is the guy who should have his spot guaranteed. Not some career slot receiver who can't stay healthy that has no prior history with our team and is watching everyone else put in work.

Idk, for Person to even ask if its putting pressure on Hixon, as though Hixon has already laid claim to a roster spot over Gettis, who has worked hard for 3 years now... That just irks me.

Gettis better be on this team, and he better be given the opportunity to contribute.

No one has stepped up for the #6 and #7 spots. You can make an arguement for the #5 spot as well. In preseason, the only receivers that have actually done something is Smith, LaFell, Gettis, and Ginn. Edwards had a couple of catches but that's it. If no one else steps up besides those 4 or 5, Hixon will make the team. It's not like he's a rookie either. He doesn't have to prove he's got the skills to do what he does. When healthy, he's easily the #4 WR at least.

Edwards, Adams, and Pilares have done nothing in the NFL.

Ginn is a returner first and foremost. You think Ginn is better than Hixon?

I was saying your whole Gettis is in contention for the 2 spot is horse poo.

Lafell is the number 2 this season unless injured. Get use to it.

Well said. I don't think that philosophy works in New England with Bill Cheatacheck. The best players should play

@_McBeastie: @jjones9 any notes on Gettis? Running better routes? Or relying on speed/poor coverage. Hands are definitely there.

@jjones9: @_McBeastie in my book he's no. 5 wr as it stands today. has ability to move up (down too). been impressed thru 2 games

Here's JJ replying to someone asking about Gettis yesterday

    • This is huge may not be a trap game but this plays a major part in what they want to do. If we can get some pressure on Sam we know what he does with pressure coming hit and heavy. Also we may be able to take the top off their defense a backup safety trying to stop TMac or Cooker over the top or forcing him to play the backend should allow us to run the ball somewhat effectively. Either they allow some runs or we take some shots and if Bryce and whoever can connect deep we’ll be in business for another big time win against a top notch opponent. Might not be a trap game but health travel game plans all play a major role in each weeks game plan and this week might be leaving our way. We’re missing some replaceable pieces they’re missing key anchors to the offense and defense major difference time to solidly ourselves at one of the top teams in the nfc tomorrow fellas buckle up.
    • Yes.  If I am not mistaken, we need to sign Coker to the ERFA tender and insist that XL spends his spring and summer at a WR camp and not Coon huntin on his four wheeler.  XL was raw when we picked him--which is why I wanted to go another direction--and we are seeing how raw.  He is basically learning a position.     The Panthers will make their move in 2026 to be an NFL powerhouse behind Bryce.  Bryce needs intelligent WRs who catch the ball.  That said, we need a solid #2 to challenge XL and make cutting him easy, if necessary.  A #2 WR (intented to be a #1 by now) with under 400 yards is embarrassing.   On offense, you have to ask, "Where can we get better?"  In my view, #2 WR, TE (although they are improving) and maybe C (again, if we re-sign Mays, he is trending up and at 26, entering his prime--I say stay with him and find competition later in the draft (not good for C).  OL depth maybe?  In other words, XL is a glaring weak spot.
