Greg Bedard should get his head out of his ass

then he must be terrible at non-playaction passes because his best stats are from PA

Yeah but the running backs stats aren't. Both the QB and RB should benefit from good "fakes and I've just seen too many plays where the defense was all over the RB because the fake wasn't sold properly.

Umm if he's handing off to the running back then it's not a fake...it's a run lol. If the defense is all over the running back on a playaction, then it means he did a hell of a job with the fake.

Who's Greg Bedard?

was beat reporter for the pats (where i first started following him on twitter) and was beat reporter for a few other teams before that and now works for SI being mentored by peter king and hired to be part of a peter king centered site that SI is building (based on grantland and (not kidding here) that is being called 'kinglandia'...at least for the time being.

i didn't figure you did, but i thought that who he's working with and what he's been doing helps understand the pov this douche is coming from. he's trying to impress his mentor/boss, peter king. what better way to do that than belittle newton?

A. Makes perfect sense. Stroke your bosses ego by following his ignorant footsteps. Boy are they in for a sirprise when Cam blows the roof off this season. :)

I'm not going to even count the number of times I've seen Cam start to execute a play fake and the RB is running the wrong way. I don't know whose fault that is but it needs to be fixed.

Us as fans don't know the different responsibilities and assignments that players have. A lot of times depending on the blocking assignments of the O-line the back is responsible to pick up the extra man. For Example, lets say D-will is supposed to run a play fake to the right, and at the last minute the defense shows blitz and the extra blitzer is on the left. Usually the o-line (center) will make a protection call which tells the back who they should pick up. If that defender is on the left D-will has to abandon his play fake and pick up the extra person. Wouldn't make to much sense to run the playaction fake to the right then try to get all the way to the backside to pick up the blitzer.

What I love about comments like Bedard's is the fact that in most, if not all, defensive systems the linebackers take their first run/pass cues from their key on the offensive line, followed by then finding the ball - this is why draws and counters (in theory) work.  Solely watching the backfield is a great way to get blocked and be terribly out of position.

Not saying Cam can't do better, but to try to solely blame him is not accurate at all.

Most people do not know this. The O-line always tell you wether it's going to be a run or pass. As a linebacker, keeping your eyes in the backfield will get u in trouble and out of position fast

    • Except it takes those QB's a few years to develop because they needed to learn the mental side of the game and have it catch up to their physical attributes. Bryce was supposed to be a QB savant who already had a fully developed mental side of the game and that was going to make up for his lack of physical ability.  And his lack of NFL level QB physical traits has been clear as day to anyone who has watched him the last 3 years, mainly, he just doesn't have an NFL arm, he can't zip the ball into tight spaces or throw on a line down the field like is needed at this level.
    • Don’t recall seeing many of his interviews but what strikes me is that he engages and goes in depth. Even with the cliche answers as referenced by OP come across somewhat thoughtful.  Very likable personality despite being someone who can crush an average person like I can crush a paper cup. I knew Motons mother had a career at MSU but was looking on the google and found that Mushin Muhammad personally knew Motons grandfather.   His late grandfather was a professor at MSU.   Cool guy.  Interesting family and small world.
    • I think people aren’t patient enough with Young. It can take a few years for a QB to develop. Look at Darnold, Baker and most recently Daniel Jones.   he hasn’t been able to put up big passing numbers either cause of how much we run the ball. You can tell our coaching staff still hasn’t took the training wheels off Bryce and let him go all out. We’ve had some pretty bad receivers as well. We finally got a true number one last year and look how much Bryce improved. Still we didn’t really have any depth behind TMac. Coker was hurt for a lot of the year and XL was our #2. How many big plays or TDs has XL dropped? I think this year can be the year we see Bryce able to hit his stride. If not then we can start looking for another qb but I just ask people to be patient.
