Q and A with Gettleman

i think even with the line we will be at worst 8-8. but it's interesting he just thinks the line needs to gel and work on getting comfortable. he even used a ron line "it's a process." which doesn't make sense coming from in. Maybe there really isn't much quality out there for the price.

I agree, I would really like to see Chris Scott get a shot at RG. I rewatched the preseason games and he actually looked pretty good. He always got good push and moved to the second level pretty good. I wonder how a line of Gross-Silatolu-Kalil-Scott-Wharton would play out. Can Wharton even play RT?

Was Gettis ever going to see the field sitting at the 6 spot? What would be the point? Just so we can say "but ehhhh we got Gettis". I'd love to have seen him make it but only if he's really outplaying the other guys and showing that he has improved his game.

How many times have we seen Armanti improve now? every year. Gettis looked pretty similar to his rookie year.

No doubt, but I was a big fan of Armanti the QB when he was at App St., so I always wanted to see him given that chance in the pros.

It always kind of irritated me that a guy like Chase Daniels, of similar stature, was just ushered in as a QB but, Armanti with more ability, is automatically a candidate to be converted to another position. That was when he became Armanti the WR, which by no fault of his own, I have not been a fan of to this point.

Anyway, I'm just happy to hear they saved a roster spot by finally considering his abilities, as I thought this should've been done 2 years ago.

They did not save a roster spot for him because they want him as the emergency quarterback or are  even considering his abilities as quarterback. He is here because he is good enough to be a wide receiver on this team.  The emergency quarterback thing is just a bonus not a main consideration.  Many teams have their emergency quarterback as  a wide receiver or someone who played quarterback in college or in high school. Not all of them can't afford to have 3 on the 53 man roster.

I agree 95% but I do think it does add value for Edwards. As I said earlier they would not use him except to finish a game and then immediately sign another QB if the other two QBs were injured. But it does give us the ability to not carry a third QB on the roster and maximize every other position.

But he is a WR and that is not going to change.

I didn't mean they literally "saved" a roster spot for him because of that alone.  I didn't do a very good job clarifying, but I meant I was happy that they finally considered his abilities as a thrower, saved US a roster spot as a team by not carrying a 3rd QB who wasn't very good anyway, and that they also have a guy on the roster who would make for a very serviceable emergency QB who can also play another position (and hopefully will be able to do it well this year).

Exactly.  No one is saying it isn't a good move to use Edwards, that way you can add another guy to the offensive line depth.  It is simply that people who hear he is the emergency backup are deluding themselves thinking that the Panthers are seeing his quarterback possibilities and that isn't the case.  As you say, he is a wide receiver and will never play QB in the NFL except on an emergency basis.

I know I'm going to catch hell for this, but fug it. I'm not one that has EVER even remotely suggested that AE should start for our team, especially since we got Cam, though I was very tempted in 2010. I am however convinced that AE was by far a good enough QB to have played that position in the NFL. He was every bit as talented as Wilson out there in Seattle.

No joke, if he would have been drafted in the AC (after Cam) NFL he may very well have gotten that opportunity.

But he didn't and no one is going to try and change him back.

I hear you but the words serviceable and emergency quarterback don't belong in the same sentence. He would be a disaster as a quarterback with virtually no experience in the NFL (1 or 2 plays since we signed him). He has no ability as a passer as far as the NFL goes.  If there was any chance they felt that they would ever have to go to a third quarterback in a game, they would have kept PIckles. You don't take a guy who has never played quarterback in the NFL in practice or in games and put him in a situation where he would actually play unless you think it wouldn't come to that.

I don't know where this knock on his ability to throw came from... I don't feel like digging up the article, but he certainly was able to throw it.

IIRC, there was a pre-draft article in the observer in 2010 talking about how he tossed it 65 yards or so while being tackled or something of the sort. I never studied his throwing motion but, it couldn't have been any slower than The Golden Calf of Bristol's, and despite what has happened since, he was able to lead a team to a playoff win.

He always had the ability to play QB IMO, but I think he was one of those guys that had so much playmaking ability in space that they figured he would be better projected at a different position.
