He put both of them in their place after the Giants win. Also he talked to Hakeem Nicks personally after the game about how the Giants organization doesn't appreciate him and said we'll take you in Carolina

Some on this board would take Nicks in more places than just Charlotte... ;)

Here is my best attempt at a recap on the wise words of 89:

Steve Smith said the biggest thing he took away from this weekend was that he is financially secure but still doesn't have NFL Sunday Ticket and may need to make a change soon because some games were "like watching paint dry." Said it was hard watching the WAS @ OAK game so instead watched Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives after ditching NASCAR after a few laps.

Watched a bit of the Minnesota and Pittsburgh game on Redzone because the Panthers play the Vikings in a couple weeks.

Says there is nothing better than college football, misses playing college ball, and loves the atmosphere at the collegiate level.

Mentions UNC football taking a backseat to other sports at the university. Said it was tough watching "boo-boo" football of the ACC on Saturday and that the SEC is his "drug of choice" despite being a PAC-10/12 guy and growing up with them on the west coast.

Talks about play-calling at the collegiate level and seems frustrated that some coaches stray from what works and says that it is important to "not try to fix what aint broke." Steve Smith says Aaron Murray should be a legitimate top pick in the draft, as well as the Georgia kicker..."he was thumpin' the ball!"

Caller called in and the hosts, 89, and caller talked more about the UNC/ECU game this past weekend. Still nothing Panthers related yet besides one of the hosts mentioning that Steve Smith came on the year when we were 0-2 and insisted that the sky isn't falling and that there is still a lot of football left to be played.

Smith says sports are an instant gratification business and that the NFL and NCAA are copy-cat leagues. Continued on with the hosts about the Lane Kiffin firing and Larry Fedora as a coach/person.

Hosts bring up how the Panthers are in 2nd place in the NFCS. 89 says the NFC is wide open and we need to do well and give ourselves an opportunity to get into the playoffs. It is important to stay in the hunt and hit on all cylinders in the playoffs. Says teams are so different year to year, and every year brings new problems and new bad habits. Mentions Atlanta looking great on paper but in reality they are weak and soft in the trenches.

Hosts says Carolina Panthers can compete with anyone in the NFC and continues to say that the Panthers are far better than the Arizona Cardinals after watching their game yesterday and that their offense is "hot garbage" with Carson Palmer. Says Panthers defense can really take advantage of that match-up.

Asked his thoughts on the NE @ ATL game. 89 says it was passed his bedtime but the system plays a crucial role in the Patriots' success but Brady makes it all go. Says Cam isn't older than himself, so 89 knows the system better and it is no slight on Cam. 89 is a veteran and just understands the ins and outs because of years of experience and it is really that simple.

Asked if it would be worth it for the Panthers to give up a 5th or 6th to bring in Kenny Britt. 89 said we already have Ginn and LaFell and it is important to ask why he is on the trading block and it could be something to do with nothing about football at all.

Hosts and Smitty talk about our special teams being great especially our kickers. Brought up the short punts that have hit our guys and Smith mentions, from his returning days, that the returner is responsible for yelling and getting guys out of the way and other guys on the field need to relay the call... "poison! poison!"

Talked about momentum shifting in the HOU/SEA game. Poor decision making lost the game for Houston.

89 says he hopes to play for 16 total years in the league and then it is time to "iron me, and put me on the shelf."

Steve Smith says his hip is "not bad." 89 practiced today and is anxious to go up against Patrick Peterson. Says Peterson has improved since his rookie year and has put in the work to transition to the NFL. 89 just says you have to stay the course and that you will win and lose some battles throughout the day but it's important to take mental notes during the day and then apply that to the field.

Smith talks about "Raiders gettin dey ass kicked since 90'fo" when one hosts mentions them struggling since 03' after a caller brought up their game with the Redskins. Smith defends McFadden and his injury issues saying its really tough for a fast-twitch guy to get back from a pulled hamstring. Says McFadden shouldn't be used as an every-down back and they haven't adjusted to what his strengths are.

Caller asks 89 what he thought of Peyton Manning. Smith says, as a fan, that Manning is throwing that ball around like a backyard game with no one even looking to play defense. He says he is phenomenal and that they are making Decker look far better than he is but that D. Thomas is a damn good player.

Talks about Stew being stuck off to the side and on his own during rehab...which he considered part of the business side of football and Smith didn't get to see Jonathan work out today because he was busy with Cam and working on the passing game. Smith says DeAngelo has had a good season thus far and it is all about "balance, balance, balance!"

Asked about his role in mentoring the younger receivers. He says his legacy is very important to him and wants guys to say that Steve Smith helped them when he is gone and retired. Says Joe Adams had to step up this year and that guys are going to work as hard as they want and people need to work just as hard as they were when they were preparing for the draft and combine. Says playing in the NFL is like receiving your tax refund check in the mail for 17 weeks of the year. Says its all about learning how to manage money so when you get that second or third contract you can really go out and get yourself what you truly deserve rather than blowing a rookie contract early in your career.

Bye week is all about the classroom for the most during the first week. Runs some routes and works on small minute things that go along the way throughout the season. It is an opportunity to really better yourself rather than prepare for an opponent. Says bye week is a double-edged sword because you get rested and healthy but also can get complacent or rusty if you let it happen.

Says Honey Badger reminds him or Troy P. because they allow him to roam and just be himself because he is a smart and instinctual football player. 89 cannot watch football with the sound on; because announcers have no idea what they are talking about for the most part.

Steve Smith at this stage in his career says the #1 thing he needs to work on is his cardio (made that call and asked the question myself!)

    • Yeah I was crying about this earlier in the year when we got to 6 wins. Equal number to Wilks.  We are still a QB away.
    • Hey y'all, a topic that has been on my mind has always been the parallels between two of the best quarterbacks in the history of the NFC South and ultimately their place in history and how they are viewed moving forward through the rest of NFL history. These two quarterbacks as you might have guessed are their respective franchises greatest signal callers, Cam Newton and Matt Ryan.  Cam Newton (144 Games Started): 269 TDs (1.8 per contest), 123 INTs, Super Bowl Appearance, OROTY, MVP  Matt Ryan (234 Games Starter):  394 TDs (1.6 per contest), 183 INTs, Super Bowl Appearance, OROTY, MVP  Obviously on first glance, these are very similar players with identical top accomplishments. Let's zoom in a little bit on their surrounding talent. C Cam Newton top offensive producers:  Greg Olsen (TE) (9 Seasons) (3 Pro Bowls) Steve Smith Sr. (WR) (3 Seasons) (1 Pro Bowl) Matt Ryan top offensive producers:  Julio Jones (WR) (10 Seasons) (7 Pro Bowls)  Roddy White (WR) (8 Seasons) (4 Pro Bowls)  Tony Gonzalez (TE) (5 Seasons) (4 Pro Bowls)  Wow, quite the difference here. Through Cam's career his top option was Greg Olsen, who was one of the best tight ends of his generation and a real difference maker in an offense reliant on their quarterback making plays outside of structure. Newton post Steve Smith Sr was saddled with a revolving door of Chicken McNobodies at the receiver position and the offense had to be funneled through the tight end and running attack as Jericho Cotchery, Corey Brown, Jason Avant, Kelvin Benjamin, etc was not getting the job done. Ryan on the other hand was consistently surrounded with top level offensive weapons, including one of the best receivers and tight ends in the history of the game, thanks in part to an aggressive general manager who wanted to ensure they could maximize the arm talent of their franchise quarterback.  How about protection?  Cam Newton top offensive lineman: Jordan Gross (3 Seasons) (1 Pro Bowl)  Ryan Kalil (8 Seasons) (2 Pro Bowls) Andrew Norwell (4 Seasons)  Trai Turner (6 Seasons) (5 Pro Bowls) Matt Ryan top offensive lineman:  Jake Matthews (8 Seasons) (1 Pro Bowl)  Alex Mack (5 Seasons) (3 Pro Bowls)  Andy Levitre (3 Seasons)  Todd McLure (5 Seasons)  While Matt Ryan certainly had more consistency and high level talent on his offensive line, one could argue they had similar protection through the bulk of their career. Though one has to acknowledge some of the absolute dog water lineman that were trot out to protect Newton at his tackle spots post Jordan Gross retirement. Byron Bell, Mike Remmers, Matt Kalil, Chris Clark, Amini Silatolu, Nate Chandler, etc were all a collective pile of garbage save for two seasons from Remmers and a few splashes of brilliance from Michael Oher, Daryl Williams, and early career Taylor Moton.  Defense should be fairly simple.  Cam Newton defense average rank:  17th/32 Matt Ryan defense average rank:  18th/32  Honestly I was a bit surprised by this, I had thought Cam consistently had the better defenses, but when you look at the average it's shockingly close. While Newton did have the higher peaks of defense, Atlanta placed higher more consistently and only really faltered towards the end of Ryan's career. Both these players had on and off again defenses to rely on.  So what does all this mean?  1. I am bored at work  2. Cam Newton has the better body of work given the talent around him  While I am not sure either is necessarily a lock to get a gold jacket, it's undeniable that Newton carried his franchise on his back for the better part of his career and changed how quarterbacks are viewed as a whole. Newton became the blueprint for a new breed of signal caller, and Ryan is the standard that is set for pocket quarterbacks in the modern league. Both players deserve their kudos for what they did for their franchises and how they morphed their team's identity, but Newton I think was clearly the better of the NFC South quarterbacks, especially if he had remained as healthy as Ryan did.
    • 100% agree, trading him would be the best possible scenario. It allows for a clean start at QB and you get something back.
