Another Indictment of the Coaching Staff

Is that they clearly spent the offseason with Shula as the OC de-emphasizing Cam as a runner and encouraging him to make plays from the pocket.

I mentioned in the first two weeks of the season that it appeared Cam was avoiding running and when he did run, he was giving himself up earlier than years prior. Furthermore, he wasn't being utilized in designed runs the first two weeks of the season. The Giants sucked, BUT we used Cam more as a runner and he looked like the Cam of old, which opened the passing game up for him and in a very backwards sense, protected the offensive line. Against the Giants, he also appeared much more aggressive in finishing his runs.

So, we win big against NY, coaches start feeling comfortable again, and they go back to the conservative style we started the first two games with, and again, Cam stays in the pocket and refuses to run. The times today that he was given more than two seconds to set his feet and throw and no one came open, he just held the ball and waited. Even if he is being spied, you gotta trust Cam to beat one man if he decides to break the pocket and scramble. It's clear he is being asked to play from the pocket and run less, and we are losing as a result...

Eh

Cam had a fire start to this game. Cam to me showed out of all the young qb's in the league, he's one of the few that's capable of staying in the pocket and making throws. We need an offensive mind and better weapons around him. They said A.E and Hixon isn't the answer in my thread, isn't any of our receivers the answer? Draft offseason that's our focus

Washington literally spend the entire game spying him....AZ has one of the few LBs that can take Cam away in that aspect

But they should of moved him and rolled him out of the pocket....but stress on the D and helped Cam with the rush

Give him a staff that has even the slightest clue about how to develop a quarterback and see what he can do.

Right now we have some dipshit that's been fired from everywhere he's been as his OC, and the only QB to his credit that he developed was fuging David Garrard. Then we have a guy who we hired as a damn scout to not only be a first time coach but Cam's QB coach.

Enough with this low budget poo. JR either needs to spend real fuging money on the staff, or sell the team to someone who will.

No doubt you are right about needing an offensive coach and more weapons, but almost all of the other young QBs are capable of outstanding play from the pocket.

And yes, Cam started hot, but when he doesn't run or present the possibility of it to a defense, it catches up to him later in the game, which is what happened today.

You do have to give credit to arizona's d line.  The announcers kept mentioning the DTs for arizona needing to step it up, which was bullshit , they were doing exactly what they needed to do.  Cam had no running lanes on most pass plays.  Why the hell are we not running more bootlegs?

If you want your QB to be able to stay in the pocket then you better put an NFL caliber OL in front of him.  Once KC pinned their ears back and started bringing the heat, we played right into their hands running 5-7 step dropbacks with slow developing routes.  We did nothing to make them pump the brakes on their blitzing and they didn't.

Washington is an outstanding athlete and player but, I trust if he attempts to run five times, regardless of the spy, he will break one for substantial yardage. And if he doesn't, at the very least, it puts ridiculous amounts of pressure on the D.

Regardless, I'm with you about using more boots and rollouts. Thats why I kept specifically stating that they wanted to make him make plays "from the pocket," versus any variation of anything out of it. They aren't doing hjm or us any favors by trying to turn him into Dan Marino.

You can only boot if you establish a run game. Otherwise you are just rolling into a DE.

We need to change this offense up. I know Cam's strength is passing down field, but if we really are going to keep passing 30+ times a game we need to make these quicker routes and easier reads.

When they blitzed, the pressure was almost immediate and he didn't have many choices, especially when it came straight up the middle... problem is, I can't count how many times the OL did at least push the pressure outside and Cam climbed the pocket, only to end up standing there patting the ball for another 3 seconds with no one to throw to. Even if Washington was spying, which I didn't see when he moved up the pocket like that, he had the chance and space to scramble and make him miss.

Maybe some screens, some draws, you know, things every other football team does when the pass rush is getting hot.  This coaching staff seems to have no understanding of the ebb and flow of games.  What we did on offense in the first quarter was working, so we just stick with it the entire game.

I find myself thinking this every week.

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
