Cam throwing on the run...

I'd say his passing on the run is about like his passing in general.  Looks spectacular on one play, substandard a few plays later.

As has been said many times, gunslingers like Newton are rarely consistent with their ball placement.  You coach them to be as accurate as possible, but you're never going to make a Tom Brady / Aaron Rodgers pinpoint deadeye passer out of this type of quarterback (Favre was scattershot right up to the end).

What you're shooting for with a gunslinger is for more of the balls to be catchable than not.  If you can get that and combine it with receivers who are good at adjusting to the ball, you can win a lot of games.

That's the goal.

Yeah MrScot, I would love to see us get that Plaxico type receiver with the wing span. A giant target area with good hands. Those guys are hard to find and hard to pay but I think Cam's game would improve greatly with that kind of guy.

One major difference from Plaxico: I'd prefer one with a functioning brain.

Gives me an idea though...

Russell Wilson is incredible at running and keeping track of the routes, using his vision and making the throw. I imagine it's something they work on a ton because he is a true scrambler. Cam doesn't "scramble" well. He runs well and he throws well but he's very average when you put the two together. The one thing I would love to see Cam take from Wilson's game is to throw the ball in the dirt when he doesn't have a play. Sometimes he gets away but most of the time he throws a pick or takes a bad sack when he tries to make a play.

Russell Wilson is this generation's Fran Tarkenton.

For those of you who didn't get to watch him play, Tarkenton was an amazing scrambler.  He'd run around back there for about 50 yards sometimes trying to avoid the pass rush...then somehow, find a way to get the ball to a receiver.  It was really something to see.  To this day, I still haven't seen anyone run around as much as he did, but Wilson probably comes the closest.

So, yea. He's just an inconsistent passer. The percentage of erratic throws probably increases when he leaves the pocket because it is a much more difficult throw to make. Throwing on the run is something that can be practiced though.

Just a heads up, that second link is broken.  But pie for the first gif, haven't seen that play since the actual game... damn, I forgot how far back he was from the endzone.  That throw is impressive as fug considering the distance, accuracy, and it being on the run.

Edit: Nevermind on the link being broken... it wasn't working for me at first.

The best Pass Ive seen from Cam was a scramble,..not a bootleg though. It was the scramble against the Taints last year...where Cam scrambled, jumped straight up and toss a 60 yd bomb to Smitty. We all know Smitty made a great catch and then was cheapshotted by Roman Harper. Think about that...jump straight up and launch a laser 60 yards all arm no body..that is incredible and I doubt any other qb can do that.

Can't compare Cam, or anyone else for that matter, to Wilson on throwing on the run. Been watching football for 30+ years. I can't remember a QB that could throw on the run as well as Wilson. He's still young, but has the potential to be the GOAT throwing on the run.

I would have to agree with the OP.  While Cam lands a few every now and again, it is more often than not that the ball sails on him.  Luckily for us, it really isn't THAT important he be able to throw on the run.  I mean, what percentage of passes come on either designed bootlegs or are a product of escaping the pass rush?  I would venture to say that percentage is low.  Passing from the pocket and running when necessary is what wins the games.  Though, I do wish Cam wasn't as clumsy running the ball; seems he is always tripping or slipping on the grass.

    • The bottom line is we saw long stretches this season where T-Mac wasn't even targeted.  He had games where he went an entire half without seeing a pass thrown his way, and it lead to a bunch of games with 5 or less targets.  If he's healthy and we're not up a stupid amount and only running the ball, I can't see him having more than a game or two next year with 5 or less targets. We were also only 22nd this year in pass attempts, and that was with a rookie #1 and no legitimate 2nd option for half the season.  And even then, we were only 46 pass attempts above 31st place. If we go into next season with T-Mac improved in his 2nd season and a healthy Coker for 17 games, there is absolutely no reason for us to not throw it more.  That right away increases both of their target totals without sacrificing any targets from each other or other players, add in them taking targets from the TEs and RBs on top of that, and your argument just doesn't hold water anymore. You can't look at targets/yards in a vacuum and think next year Coker just takes some from T-Mac.  You have to look at the team as a whole and our situations this year and then project what will happen next year. If he's healthy for 17 games, I'd bet my life savings that T-Mac sees increases across the board, targets/catches/yards/TDs.   Just as Coker will also see career highs in all categories, it's not one vs the other, it's shifting offensive strategy given our personnel, which next year will be much better for our passing game (QB issues aside).
    • C'mon now.... First, you can't switch up your argument once someone points out a major flaw in your point. You're saying we shouldn't expect a big increase in targets/yards for T-Mac, but then shift to talking about averages with Chase when I point out the significant leap he took there once you factor in his missing games.  He saw an increase in targets in 5 less games, averages aside, he saw a significant increase in targets in his 2nd season, what he then did with those targets is actually irrelevant in this discussion. Puka seeing no increase is pointless, as he saw such an absurd amount of targets for a rookie, it's near impossible to see an increase. But the real issue in this post is that you think I'm proving your point by showing how Waddle had to share targets with Hill. Tyreek Hill was a 1st team All Pro who was 2nd in the NFL in yards that season. If you think Jaylen Waddle sharing targets with a 1st team All Pro and a future HOFer is even remotely in the same category as T-Mac needing to share targets with Coker... then you are certifiably insane, lol. If anything, you could make the argument that Coker is to Waddle as T-Mac is to Hill in that discussion (which would then lead to a serious increase in targets/yards for T-Mac).  But even that is insane, as neither T-Mac or Coker will be as good as Hill and Waddle respectively that season.  I love both of their potential, but c'mon now, T-Mac isn't getting 119 catches for 1,700 yards and Coker isn't getting 117 for 1,350 next season.
