Cam Newton didn't hang his head after starting off 2-11/13 Yds and just throwing an INT. He picked it back up and led the team down the field for the only TD of the game. That's a Cam we haven't seen before this season. In fact, Cam put up numbers that were higher than his season average to that point. If you were to take his numbers after the INT and project them across a whole game, you'd hit his average of about 225 yards. Cam didn't have a bad day yesterday, Cam had a bad quarter.

 

 

I know it's reddit and not a major outlet, but this guy puts up some interesting info, and good insight.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- This is why coaches like to watch film before fully evaluating a player's performance. 

 

Statistically, Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton had a bad day in Sunday's 10-9 victory over the San Francisco 49ers. 

 

His passer rating was 52.7, well below his average of 93.1 coming into the game and worse than all but one game this season. He completed only 50 percent of his passes, again way below the 64.4 success rate through eight games. 

 

But when you consider the way Newton managed the game, the mistakes made around him and the way he came up with big plays when the Panthers (6-3) needed them the most, it wasn't nearly so bad. 

 

"Figures lie and liars figure,'' coach Ron Rivera said. "You can look at the numbers all you want. Put the tape on and see what happened. See how many times the ball got tipped, how many times the ball got dropped, how many times he overthrew it. 

 

"He didn't play a bad game. I mean it, too.'' 

 

Offensive coordinator Mike Shula and quarterback coach Ken Dorsey concurred. 

 

"He's the quarterback, and we all know the quarterback is going to get a lot more credit and a lot more blame during wins and losses, or production or lack of,'' Shula said. 

 

"In the passing game, we were just a little bit off, whether it was throws or catches or protection.'' 

 

Rivera counted three dropped passes, and suspects there were a couple more. He counted several balls that were tipped at the line of scrimmage. He pointed to several breakdowns on the offensive line, a big one resulting in an 8-yard loss two plays before Graham Gano kicked the game-winning 53-yard field goal. 

 

The play before the field goal is one of those that impressed Rivera. Newton under pressure threw a short pass to Steve Smith for 6 yards that put Gano within field goal range. 

 

Rivera also noted the 9-yard pass to Smith on third-and-8 that allowed the Panthers to run the clock under two minutes before San Francisco regained possession. 

 

"That dump-off pass to Steve that put us in field goal position was huge,'' River said. "I don't get it, but that's [final statistics] what people are going to see and people are going to say. We're not going to worry about that. 

 

"We're going to worry about how we do things here and the things we need to do to give ourselves a chance to win.'' 

 

Newton gave the Panthers a chance to win.

I've already said this, Cam's boxscore looks terrible but he played really really well after those first few drives.

 

He did what he needed to and generally made smart choices.  His receivers dropped some balls (happens a lot to us it seems) but overall he made the throws when it counted most.

 

Cam's 3rd down play was absolutely spectacular and I think a lot of people, even those giving us props in the national media, haven't really seen that yet.  Just wait.  They'll realize soon.

PFF graded Cam positively for his passing in this game. It was his rushing grade (probably counting the fumble against him) that dinged his overall grade.

he did exactly what i said he'd do, which was do what he did against atl and come out a little shaky/excited/nervous and make some dumb mistakes, but then settle down and find his groove.

 

once he did, he wasn't bad at all. the rest of the game he threw 21 times and had 14 completions. that's 66% which is a bit above average, iirc. and 156 yards for those three quarters isn't horrible, but it could have been better...esp. if the WRs hadn't been dropping balls.

 

it wasn't one of his best games, but overall it definitely wasn't one of his worst.

 

of course you have to also consider who he was playing...one of the top 3 or 4 Ds in the league and playing them in their house with their noise. that isn't a great situation to be throwing in. sure, a couple others have done ok there but that doesn't matter. all that matters is that the offense gave us just what we needed to win when we needed it and the defense made it easy. both sides of the ball bail each other out when they need it and that is what makes a great team.

I'm not sure if I can trust PFF anymore, they gave Star a really bad grade and in the refocused review praised Joe Staley while not even mentioning our pass-rush. That was definitely biased grading.

The grade star got was surprising

Star was doing what he has been doing all season. I remember the very first play they ran right at him and he stopped Gore at the line scrimmage, the rest of the night anytime they tried to run his way Gore had to bounce it outside a lot because star was clogging up the middle. The whole d line played outstanding dont know how you give anybody a negative grade.
