Cam Newton's "Flop" and "Acting" Is What Got Us The Win -- Today in Yahoo Sucks

Carolina quarterback Cam Newton is a heck of a football player. Turns out, he's not a bad actor, either.

Newton led another thrilling game-winning drive in a 20-16 win over Miami, hitting Greg Olsen for a 1-yard touchdown with 43 seconds left. One of the biggest plays of that drive was Newton flopping out of bounds.

So we're winning now, right? And the common phraseology over the past 4 years whenever someone would post a bad article about us was "the respect will come once we win," right? And now the common phraseology is "who cares what they say, we're winning!!"

All of that is true, but damn. Give credit where credit is due. Seven straight wins doesn't come because of two penalty flags near the end of games. It's 60 minutes of football, not "one play to win the game" football.

i actually thought the opposite was going to happen. i thought people would dick ride hard when we started winning.

we are genuinely a hated team and i think it all starts with our starting qb. the reader comments on some of these articles with backhanded comments like, "cam is just like jamarcus russell, the defense wins them games" stuff like that makes me realize Cam will always be a polarizing sports figure. nothing is going to change that.

i guess i shouldnt have been so naive.

They're not saying that was the play that gave us the win; if anything, it's a sign of Cam's savviness. But here's the reality: the defender hit him late, and Cam sold the penalty. Nothing wrong with that, the defender has to be smart enough to know he had no reason to even touch him.

I think it's a passive-aggressive way to take a shot at Cam. The whole "look at his smile after he sold the penalty" just makes it seem as if they're making him out to be sly and sneaky but in a bad way.

If you all have been paying any attention Schwab has been on the Panthers bandwagon from even before the start of the season. And Cam absolutely sold the penalty (or flopped, call it what you want.) But guess what, the defender made it easy. Any QB with half a brain was going to take full advantage right then, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

    • Possible, he is physical and a forchecker but not a needle mover, but i wouldnt mind it
    • The problem with these summary stats and rankings is that they flatten out progression and assume an even performance throughout the year. His first 3 or 4 games of the season don't really tell you anything about his current level of capacity but more about where he started and what his floor was last year. Given his last several games were against playoff teams, that gives you an idea of his current ability coming into the season. But it will serve more as a floor than a ceiling given the upgrade in talent on offense. And a better defense should give us more stops which results in shorter fields and more opportunities. And going into his third year there is no reason to suspect he will regress. His success wasn't  based on being superhuman but being smart and taking what was the defense was giving him. Distributing to the other guys not trying to do it on his own. He was great at the end when pressured and consistently moved the ball. That makes him a great game manager which is what we need. Something that is easier to do and relies on everyone else rather than having to be a top physical specimen or do it on his own. No one can predict the future but to say we haven't improved much is crazy given just having the Browns anchoring the defensive line will shut down the run and make sure QBs won't be stepping up in the pocket.  Assuming Evero got the message to can the prevent defense and bend until you break philosophy.
    • If the Canes don't bring back Tyson Jost or Jack Roslovic, is Tanner Jeannot an option? https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2025/06/senators-expected-to-show-interest-in-tanner-jeannot.html
