This is the best Damn essay on Jake Delhomme and why the Panther's were right to sign him to a long term contract!

One nice thing about his game is that he still gets better in the fourth quarter. Although he's ranked 18th in the league among active quarterbacks, in the fourth quarter he suddenly becomes the NFL's fifth best. He actually led the league in completion percentage late in the game when the score was close.

Yes, despite his lousy overall numbers, when the game is on the line he's still

one of the best around.

And when the game is on the line and we need the gunslinger to come out, his rating rises from the high 70's to 97.8. Somehow he gets a lot more accurate too.

Do you think the Chargers are ready to question his accuracy in the last two minutes? Dante Rosario sure won't.

How about the Bears, who watched him go four for five in the fourth, including a deep ball to King that put the Panthers in perfect position for the go-ahead score. Do you think they respect his game?

Green Bay ought to have a lot of respect for Jake's ability to hit the deep ball in the fourth quarter. Or was that all Steve Smith?

Of course, the Saints are well acquainted with his comebacks. They suffered another one last year as Jake hit Smitty for a big gain on the Panthers' last drive. He completed his only other attempt to Moose before Kasay kicked the game winning field goal.

The bottom line is, Jake was deadly in the fourth every time the Panthers were in a close game last year. The Giants edged the Panthers in overtime, but that might be blamed on the defense instead of the quarterback

This column isn't about that. It's about why people think the Panthers are doomed with Jake under center.

It's about blaming a quarterback for choosing a terrible time to have a terrible game.

A game in which the starting running back managed 23 yards after an opening drive that saw him run all over the opponents.

A game in which the NFL's third best rushing attack ran the ball 15 times and passed 34, including on the vast majority of first downs.

A game in which the defense left one of the NFL's best receivers uncovered in the flat for the entire first half. In six of Arizona's seven possessions during the first half, the Cardinals were forced to punt only once.

A game in which the quarterback shouldered the blame for the whole team and staff, and still accepts it.

no one can really argue with that.. pretty much sums up what all the "homers" are saying, even though it's a balanced view.. ashame all the haters are really the ones ignoring all the facts. No one says he's the greatest ever, just sayin he's not solely the problem...

The Delhomme lynch mob will avoid this until there are enough posts to cloud the issue. This doesn't change the fact that Jake has his work cut out for him this year. Jake is now "all in" with the fans, the way I see it.

Carolina is a running team. When the game starts, Jake is called on to be a game manager. He's tasked with handing the ball off to Williams and Stewart, and when we need a first down he'll throw for it.

people who refer to themselves and the team as "we" are usually fans, so i don't think this was from an outside observer. This was a fan coming to his defense.

I agree with most of it, except for the part where he mentions all of the famous quarterbacks and their bad games. It's a lot easier for a guy like Peyton Manning to get past the media with 4 INTs than for a guy like Jake Delhome to get by with 5 ints and fumble.

I don't see why that would matter. Especially because all the points he makes are verifiable facts. And seeing as most "Outside Observers" have dropped the ball in this arena. They make a quick surface read and call that the reality of the situation.

Small market teams don't get very good coverage from National "Experts".

Remember Amateurs built the Ark, while Experts built the Titanic!

But the sinking of the Titanic had more to do with the arrogance of the crew and White Star, the operating company. Similar to the way the media has jumped all over Jake, the Titanic's reputation as unsinkable was a product of the media at the time, and not the builders. It just goes to show that you can never trust the media.

But anyways, good article. I especially agree that Jake fits our offensive system. He is not a QB you should force to win you the game, but he is a leader and a good game manager.

      Nothing wrong with starting to look for bodies early. It's a long injury filled season. I doubt we get through unscathed.

      We're in alignment regarding Thielen not being a game changer/breaker for the Panthers. Getting the ball into hands of playmakers like TMac and XL is going to open up things more than it is getting it to Thielen underneath (or letting him go after 50/50 balls 20yds downfield in his mid-30s). However, in a room where the other guys are two second year guys and two rookies, having a reliable vet that they can learn from is just as important as it is for the QB to have as a reliable third option. I can see that being worth $8.5M (just 3%) of the $279.2M cap... especially when looking at what's left out there: https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/_/position/wr However, the idea that the team is forcing production to Thielen and leading to losses isn't supported by the data. Targets, not receiving yards, are how you can tell if a player is being "force fed." In the two games mentioned, let's look at the other players available... vs. TB 10 targets - Adam Thielen 9 targets - David Moore 8 targets - Tommy Tremble, Xavier Legette 3 targets - Jonathon Brooks 1 target - Dan Chisena, Feleipe Franks, Stephen Sullivan vs. PHI 11 targets - Adam Thielen 8 targets - Xavier Legette 5 targets - Chuba Hubbard, David Moore 2 targets - Tommy Tremble 1 target - Ja'Tavion Sanders, Deven Thompkins There isn't exactly a bounty of other names to throw the ball to. In those games, AT was one of the top 2 WRs. Diontae had been gone by that point.   So... yea. Agreed that Thielen isn't exactly carrying the team in his mid-30s, but it's undeniable that he was the most reliable target last season that still has quite a bit of value this season. Whether or not that value is reflected in a manner folks think on the contract is going to come down to personal taste. However, the idea that the team was forcing production to AT and that was the reason behind some losses couldn't be further from the truth.

      I would also add that I think it's more than money.  AT has looked absolutely miserable out there at times, and there was a lot of speculation he would demand to be traded.  Personally, I thought he was a lock to be moved last year.  Maybe his hamstring is the only thing that prevents that from happening. The fact that he's not only willing to come back and play, but excited about it, really bodes well for Bryce.  AT is a veteran and he knows the game.  If he didn't have confidence in Bryce, I guarantee you he wouldn't be in a Panther uniform this year.  I'll take that as a positive.
