Panthers believe Jonathan Stewart has torn MCL

You can't really say that. If Cam breaks his neck last week he doesn't become a bad draft pick. Stewart and Otah were monsters on the field when healthy, and you can't decline to draft good players on the chance they could get hurt.

But, both had concerns coming into the draft.  Stewart was coming into the league with injury concerns and there were many who questioned Otah's work ethic leading up to the draft.  Hurney gambled on both and lost.  Guys like Morgan and Beason you can't blame on Hurney. Those guys didn't come into the league with injury issues, they just fell apart once they got to the NFL.  But, when a GM drafts guys with injury and/or work ethic issues and those issues go onto derail that guy's career, you can absolutely say those were bad picks.  Especially if they were 1st rounders.  It's a different story with mid or late round picks.  If you can get a player of their talent level but a question mark or two in the mid to late rounds, then by all means do it.  Greg Hardy is a good example.

I'd agree, but MCL/ACL injuries seem to be on the rise.

Well its two parts...

It used to be just called a "blown out knee".

Also, this is my understanding, since the athletes have gotten so much bigger and stronger in the last 2 decades, their ligaments are not getting stronger.  And the extra muscle mass and increased stress put on these joints are causing them to rupture much more frequently.

Tears are just bad sprains.  A tear begins to happen at Grade Two.  A Grade One is just ligament stretching, no actual tear.  A Grade Two is a partial tear and a Grade Three is a full tear.

Just to clarify this, there are two different terms used in the medical community regarding trauma or "tearing" to soft tissue structures in the human body. A strain is injury to a muscle or tendon (tendon connects muscle to bone) , while a sprain is trauma to ligaments (ligaments connect bone to bone) or joint capsules.

The MCL, LCL, ACL, and PCL are all ligaments in the knee which basically help to stabilize the joint during cutting, running, jumping, etc.

As far as the grading the injuries, LinvilleGorge is correct. They also use this grading system in strains as well.

But lets remember, a partial tear (Grade 2) which is what we are assuming J-Stew has, is still a tear and will require significant care and rehab before he returns. And his injuries always taking longer to come back from......

Perhaps, but if he can't play, it's a wasted roster spot on top of dead money.

Yeah, looks like it could be  a double whammy hit from what I can gather.Marty Hurney sure put a big fugging on the Panthers, now were are (or soon will be) paying the price for it. What a joke he was as GM concerning our salary cap.

Double Trouble is doing nothing now except causing us trouble.

I believe he will take a paycut knowing how his contract is holding this team back and him having to constantly rehab.

Id rather have a 100 million dollar oline than 100 million in RBs.

Lets just hope we cut Dwill, Stewart restructures enough money to get us Micheal Oher, and Kenjon Barner puts on 20lbs this offseason

Really???  You want the most penalized offensive lineman in the league on this team?

There is no doubt he is an upgrade over Bell, but he has to get those penalties under control or it is basically a wash.

You're either taking a 5 yard sack with Bell, or a 5 yard procedure penalty/10 yard hold with Oher.

Either way you are going the wrong direction.

    • Bryce isn't a risk-taking gunslinger.  That's just QB DNA.  No one has ever said that is what we were drafting when we went that route.  That's my point.  That's not Bryce. Can you make Alex Smith throw deep? Sure.  He will occasionally.  In the reverse, can you ask Brett Favre to just take the easy layups? Sure.  He can in moments.  But in the end, they are what they are.  as I have said, Canales probably could win more games with PJ Walker.  And Bryce is a better overall QB than PJ.  PJ Walker would also have much worse games mixed in that Bryce would.
    • From what i see, Canales offense requires a QB that is willing to take chances to maximize the offense. XL is also the kind of receiver that needs a qb to be risky to bring out his full potential. Its just a matter of if Bryce is gonna be that QB.
    • Baker just played how Baker played.... everywhere but here. He is a risk taking gunslinger.  Always has been.  And last year was asked to be what he was.   Geno Smith was the best deep ball passer in the NFL his comeback season.  Wasn't even close that year.  Again, that's the type passer Canales has always been around in the offenses he has been part of.  The pass game that compliments the stubborn run is the deep chunk play pass game.   And that was his first investment with XL.  My continued point, is the same as going into last season.  It's a bad marriage going in.  The QB doesn't fit the scheme.  Again.  Carrol/Fox/Ron....all paired up their boring football with risk taking QBs.  And again, I'm fine if that is where we are going.  It's not my preference but that's not my argument.  I'm saying if we are doing that, we need a QB that matches it.
