Nice article on Gettleman

I agree with everything you just said except the eli comparison, Cam doesn't toss a lot of picks.

Cam reminds be a more athletic Big Ben

He compared him to Manning, cause they were both big, downfield passers.

The difference of course: Cam has proven he can throw the short and intermediate stuff in his third year, while Eli hates it. That's why Manning's throwing so many of the aforementioned picks. Eli  doesn't' know how to mix it up well, or take what the defense gives him.

Been reading the back and forth, on how much credit Gettleman should get, and for what.

Hmmmh. I also have a feeling, Gettlemen may have looked at the tape, and expressed to Ron he was coaching too conservative, helping Rivera's development.

Yeah, Ron may not have listened through the first 4 games (based on his coaching, up until that point). However, after Buffalo, maybe a light bulb went off (with or with out Gettleman's additional comments), based of some prior discussion they had.

I say this because: No competent, sincere GM, could look at the Panthers tape the past two years, and not offer Rivera any constructive criticism or advice on his coaching style.

Not sure, Hurney had that type of authority and credibility with Rivera.

Here's what you most need to understand about the difference between Hurney and Gettleman...

Imagine for a moment that you got a job managing a group of diamond inspectors, except you have no actual experience inspecting diamonds yourself. You'd essentially just have to try and figure out who knew their stuff and who didn't. And maybe over time, by trial and error you'd get to the point of being half decent, but minus any actual expertise of your own, you'll likely never be great.

That was Hurney. He had a staff of college scouts and pro scouts to educate and inform him, but he himself was never a scout and thus he had no special perspective of his own to offer.

Lemme tell ya, when the man with the least qualifications is the man who makes the final decisions, it ain't good.

Ah, but now things have changed. These days the guy managing the diamond inspectors is an expert diamond inspector in his own right. He knows who knows their stuff and who doesn't because he knows his stuff. He's not judging from a vacuum. And the result is more informed decision making in the front office.

If you get nothing else, at least get that.

The thing is, Hurney was one of the main reasons this team has one of the most talented front sevens in the league, as well as one of the reasons we have Cam. But along with that, he's also one of the reason we have obscene sums of money locked up into running backs, why we're in cap hell, and why we went so long without a winning season.

I'm fine with giving Hurney props - he sure knew how to pick in the first round - but his cap management and wheeling and dealing left this team reeling for years...

He built a great 'surrounding 5' IMO, he blatantly ignored adding legit DT talent to the roster ever since Jenkins left.. DTs are what make or break front 7s IMO and we have Gettleman and co. to credit for adding 2 stud ones to our roster for years to come.

What's funny is we have all of these people reading a panther's forum and you have to explain it to them like they are women. Hey guys Gettleman is like a good husband. He will get you a better diamond. Do you understand now? :)

Can't believe the Giants passed up on this guy for his assistant.  Isn't that a slap in the face!

Still...one man gathers what another man spills (Grateful Dead quote...not that I'm some kind of middle-aged hippie stoner...)

JR got it right.  Gettleman got it right.  RR got it right. Shula got it right. McD got it right.

That is one hell of a string of good decision makers and it finally seems to be paying off.

The Star/KK picks have just turned out to be absolute genius.  The Mitchell/Ginn signings as well.

Can't wait to see what he does this offseason.

If he still had a Hurney-built roster, it wouldn't matter.

Do you really think the man who responded "I don't know" when Jerry Richardson asked him how he was going to fix things could have gotten us where we are now?

Rivera still has a Hurney built roster....

and yes, if Ron would have not strictly gone by the textbook in 2011 and 2012......he wouldn't of lost all those games we were winning.  Which means he wouldn't of had a losing record in both 2011 and 2012.  He did the same thing to start 2013.....THEN the change occured.

Coaches are like players....they grow.  Ron is growing as a HC.  That is the biggest factor in us winning vs. the last few seasons.  # Old Ron with this current roster wouldn't be 10-4.

1.  Riverboat

2.  DG's draft and FA pickups

3.  Cam growing and masking a pathetic OL

Those are my 3, in order, for why I think we are winning now.  All credit doesn't go to DG.  Bulk of the pieces were here before he arrived (and they were in every game but I think 3 under the Ron/Hurney era).

All good points. But this doesn't take away from anything DG has done.

The Panthers were potentially at a cross roads with their salary cap issues. And Gettleman, through restructuring, the draft and salary cap maneuvering, helped make this season possible. That's the major take away.

With out his maneuvering (just like your other two points), this season would not have happened.

I also have a feeling, that Gettleman pointed out to Rivera, that he was coaching to conservative to win consistently in the NFL.

Yes and no. Some of the Hurney built roster is part of our problem. In my opinion there is no way Gettleman would have signed both Deangelo and Stewart to those contracts. If Hurney was still here, we would probably still have Beason wasting a spot on the roster and Chris Gamble still sucking up cap space.

It's going to be interesting to see how our cap is managed once we get some of the awful contracts off the books.
