The Return Man Debate!

I only liked Colbert his rookie year and after that he just looked like he half assed all the time. Carter had some real potential but he wasn't physical enough. I think Ryne will be a good WR, he had a rough start his rookie year and he started to really improve later in the season. Then he gets hurt the next year. I want him to be our future slot guy eventually. Goodson is a better play maker and I think he'll do KR.

I know I am hard on him as a return man but I still have hopes for him and Jarrett at WR. Like you said, Robinson could make a good slot guy and hopefully Jarrett can replace Moose. It takes a bit to learn/adjust as a WR....Jarrett took a nice step and Robinson showed promise year 1 as a WR.

R. Robinson

Hey Dan,

As you'll see by my posts, I think Ryne Robinson has a great shot at taking the returner position. I'm just curious why you think he'll get the nod over Goodson. I suppose the fact that he has a year under his belt doesn't hurt. Also, I think Robinson is going to be a quality receiver for us.

But at the same time, I think Goodson could play well as a receiver, and I think his skill set is very well-suited to the return game. Of course, there are other players out there that could be an option (Beavers, Lee, Carter), but I don't think any of them would take any other positions besides returner, and thus I don't think Fox would be able to use a roster spot on "just" a returner.

Goodson will get the first shot after Robinson cant do it again this year.

Robinson better show up this year, because we let a top 5 returner last year go to see how consistent he might be...

R. Robinson

and I'm loving that you are participating on this board... hope to see you stay around here...

they also probably cut Jones b/c Jones, while he was an effective returner, was ONLY a returner at the end of the day. Hard to keep a guy of his caliber when he really isn't a threat in any other aspect and takes up a spot on the active roster. I think they hope they have a returner they can be used also on offense.

I def agree with your point that having many options at return men that can play more positions than just a return guy is very important and may make him expendable, esp with carrying 2 kickers and needing depth at the line of attack (on both sides), but his consistency is very hard to find... top in the league last year...

This is one thing that will perk my ears up until we see someone return at his caliber.. esp since we haven't had that in years... and anyone thinking just because he can't beat a returner isn't even getting a response from me. 2 or 3 times beating a kicker isn't enough of a reason to get rid of his consistency.

Jones had a great year last year and he helped us win some games. I think there are a lot better return guys than Jones though........we could easily have one on our roster. I consider Mark Jones' season kinda like that one year Nick Goings stepped up at RB and had those several 100 yard games. He wasn't the most talented guy but was very effective for one season....odds are Goings would never have been able to pull that off again and I doubt Mark Jones would have if he stayed here.

maybe, maybe not... guess we'll never know.. neither had a 2nd year to showcase whether that is logical speculation...

Was going to say we'll get to see how he does this year, but with rule changes on top of him being on a completely different team, can't say it's going to be much of a comparison...

I would not hold my breath on Beavers, Moore or Lee making the team. Munnerlyn and Carter are going to be right on the edge. Robinson and Goodson are most likely going to get the spot(s). I fully expect Robinson to at least start the season as the main return guy. They let Jones walk because Robinson was coming back, so I'm sure he'll get his shot to start off. Goodson will probably get a chance to work in and if he produces better then he'll get the job full time. With that said, as much potential and promise as Goodson seems to have, he still hasn't had a chance to prove anything while wearing pads, or playing in a game. I have high hopes for this kid but there's still always the chance that he could fail to transition well to the Pros. I'm rooting hard for him to succeed...I'll be pretty disappointed if we have to settle for Ryne as the returner for another year, especially after having Jones last year.

Since TC is right around the corner it's time for competition. And what will probably be the most competitive battle this camp will be for return duties, we've got several possible players that can return kicks.

Ryne Robinson

Jason Carter

Captain Munnerlyn

Larry Beavers

DeCori Birmingham

Mike Goodson

Kenny Moore

Duke Robinson

Place your bets

Robinson

Beavers

Goodson
