Gray hoping to stay

That didn’t happen, but the Panthers — along with another 10 teams — called Gray as soon as the draft concluded looking to sign him as a free agent. On the advice of his agent, Curtis Stephens, Gray accepted Carolina’s offer of three years and $1.1 million.

that seems like a lot for a UDFA..i know its not guranteed but still seems like a long contract with a lot of money for a UDFA

Something that undoubtedly caught the attention of offensive line coach Dave Magazu was Gray’s request that he be allowed to get in some reps at guard. It was an unknown position, but Gray knew exactly what he was doing.

He's going for a backup posistion that is currently not being fought for and he has shown that he can switch to another posistion on the line if necessary. With the current cap crunch this is the kind of depth that a team needs.

I'm sure the contract is loaded into the second and third years with a heavy incentive package. Even as an even split, the pay rate only comes to about $37,000/year. For a player that the team was already impressed with that can fill in at multiple posistions with one of those posistions having no real current depth, I think that number seems fair.

    • Lions were never going Freeling over Miller for the same reason we wouldn't have taken Miller had Freeling not been on the board. Miller is a career RT Lions have a hole at RT, we have a hole at LT. If we took Miller, it would have been for him to backup Moton until he retires and/or we release him, so the best case scenario is it would have been a wasted 1st round pick for at least 1, if not 2 years.  At least Freeling has a shot at playing this year without injury ahead of him, he absolutely can win the LT job if he earns it, but Miller would have never supplanted Moton this year unless he got hurt.
    • What up y’all. I like threads like this where we can stroll down memory lane. I remember the insane amount of site traffic pre-crash when we signed Keyshawn Johnson, 06 I believe. Raging about the Cowboys Christmas Eve loss in 05 (Peppers touched that FG attempt as sure as Cotchery caught it). When I found the huddle I basically had a first born baby, now I’ve got one in college and one in high school. Life comes at you fast, but the Panthers and the Huddle has been a steady constant in my life for many years.  Those who have been here, y’all are cool with me any time any where.    Cheers, genitals!
    • This is a weird post since it wasn’t like we got A’s across the board. We needed a QB and got a consensus top 2 player at that position. (I was pretty vocal that Stroud should’ve been the guy but…)  I think this draft we generally got better value. I’m not particularly optimistic on BY but another year in this offense playing with TMac he really needs to be a consistently average QB at a minimum
