NFL Gameday Final Comparison of Goalline Playcalling

Deion flat out said our goal to go playcalling was horrible.

 

They said we had 9 plays inside of the 3 yard line and only came away with 3 points total.  Inexcuseable.

 

Why they said it was so mind boggling, and this is what scares me about our staff the most, particularly Rivera and Shula, is that we went down there and tried to out-tough them.  Why is that bad?  Because it shows both stubbornness and a refusal to adjust.  Marshall said we went down there and tried to "power" it in and show them we were tougher.  

 

Then when comparing it to what the Niners did in their goal to go situations, Deion said they showed us respect.  Why?  Because on the final TD they scored they went shotgun, spread us out, and then ran Krapperdick out, essentially making it one on ones across the board and trusting him to beat his matchup.  This is what we should've done with Cam.

 

And this is what made it even worse - Deion pointed out how we weren't even built for the calls we were making.  Why?  Because Cam is our leading rusher at 54 yards and our highest output from a RB was 20-some yards.  Yet, we tried to make a statement and push them back off the line and score.  Smh...

 

Even with all of the talent on San Fran's OL, they didn't try to power through us.  They mixed things up, got us off balance, and then made a call dependent on the situation.  IIRC, without looking, that was the bootleg option/pass to Davis and the. The QB sweep Florence and Keek whiffed on.

 

This just really troubles me about our staff going forward if it remains as-is.

That's what many of us were saying on an earlier thread.  Why we line up against a stout D in an obvious running formation and then try to run basic dive plays again and again makes no sense.  If we show run we should pass and if we really want to run we should spread out the defense and then let Cam run it in like they did with Kap.  Our coaching stupidity, however, forced us to run right into the heart of the strength of their defense.  Why our offense insists on telegraphing play after play baffles and frustrates me so hopefully we get somebody in here next year who knows what the fug they are doing.

It want with Shula. Zod is right he will never change and will always field a poor unit no matter the talent.

The happy medium is somewhere between Chud and Shula.  Chud was so creative and imaginative that he got too cute.  Shula lacks virtually all imagination and creativity to the point of telegraphing the play and is ultra-conservative.

Also I did not understand why they wanted to run it towards the right side of the O-line with Nate Chandler and Byron Bell blocking. Also as tondi mentioned, we telegraphed every play at the goal line, no play action or spread formation.

It felt like we were trying to fit a square peg in a round hole every time they tried to force a run on those goal line stands. And as was said by those analyst we kept doing it and refusing to switch up and try something different. It was completely incompetent playcalling.

The execution was even worse than the play calls. Pretty sure Tolbert and Cam got stuffed by their own teammates and one point. Who pulls a guard on the one inch line? Wharton tripped, inadvertently tackled Tolbert, and killed the play before it started.

In their defence, most would bank on Tolbert getting it 9/10. No QB jump over the line either? Its bread and butter stuff. THATS why we lost.. We simply couldn't get that last yard. More than once. We lost it.

Put Cam in the shotgun, put a couple receivers out wide, and let him get a full head of steam running forward to pound it in. It has worked countless times and for whatever reason we decided to do something I don't recall us running very often.

Half time adjustments is when we really show our asses.

Rivera will get another year, and likely keep his staff intact.

Pray we don't lose McD or 2014 will be very ugly.

This summary is spot on.  We got down on the one yard line and said we either smash it straight ahead and overpower their line, or we give it to them and make them work out of their own endzone with our defense.  Regardless, it absolutely took any guesswork out of it and actually made Vic Fangio's job very easy.  Lowest man wins, and they dug us out every time, totally blew up the line.

 

Really pissing me off now that I'm rehashing in my mind those precious wasted opportunities.  A defense as stout as SF, you get them down to the 1 not once but twice, and don't show a freaking ounce of creativity, at least to make them guess, possibly guessing wrong?
