yeah I'm pretty sure it doesnt work this way. i believe the franchise tag only places him under contract for year-as a normal regular player- getting paids the average of top 5 money at his position- and gives the team the freedome to do what they wish for him and trade him for whatever they see fit.

youre thinking of tenders.

no that would be the Exclusive tag

An "exclusive" franchise player—not free to sign with another club—is offered a minimum of the average of the top five salaries at the player's position as of April 16, or 120 percent of the player's previous year's salary, whichever is greater.

Which is what I was talking about initially. We aren't going to give him a nonexclusive rights tag because the odds of a team offering us 2 first rounders are immensely low. An exclusive tag permits to deal as we see fit.

If Gettleman's presser implications and our cap situation is to be believed, we would tag him sigh the intent of trading him. A non exclusive tag would scare teams off.

The fact that many people have no earthly clue as to what they are talking about in this thread, is hilarious.  YES, if Hardy is tagged under the "Non-exclusive" designation, and chooses to sign with another team, we are compensated with two first round picks.  End. of. story.

They'd still have to find a team willing to give up 2 1st round picks then, no?

Or are the picks similar to compensatory picks? I have always been under the impression that they came from the team that signed him, though.

I doubt anyone will give 2 1st rounders for Hardy if that is the case, leaving Carolina to pay around $12 mil for one year just to be right back where they started.

The team would begin negotiations already knowing what they would be giving up.

No team is going to give up two 1sts which is the whole point. If we tagged him with intent to trade, it wouldn't be under the nonexclusive rights tag. That's really all there is to it. We're fully aware he isn't worth that much and we aren't going to get that much, so we'd sign him to an exclusive rights knowing we could deal him for he best offer. I'd say a 2nd is probably the best to hope for.

Thought that's what I said.
