Home Gym

I have to use a gym. I can't even get into working out at the clubhouse in my neighborhood, I need a real gym. I think its because of all the years I spent working out for football that my body is just conditioned to needing the gym environment to get myself in the right frame of mind. I spent about 9 years between high school and college when I was in a gym literally every day and then a good 4 years after college. It's hard to break out of that mold and get into working out next to my laundry hamper or something. Good luck though.

I finally joined the gym again and have been back at it for the last few weeks. Feels good.

Here are the dumbells I went with and I friggin love them.

http://www.amazon.com/Bowflex-SelectTech-1090-Adjustable-Dumbbell/dp/B000OC5RXE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1390394627&sr=8-2&keywords=dumbbells+bowflex

A turn of the dial and the weight is changed. Very sturdy, no mess or taking off collars and stacking weights. Literally takes 3 seconds to change the weight.

They go from 5 - 90 lbs in 5 pound increments which is heavy or light enough for everything the wife and I do.

Exercise bike being delivered today for a cardio warmup. Fug this cold stuff. Mountain biking will wait until spring.

I would rather train at home when I get home. I hate crowds, I hate "experts" telling me what Im doing wrong when im tripling their weight. When I move into my new house, im buying a power rack with bars and at least 600 lbs of weight. Itll be expensive, but itll be worth it. youll love it.

We've been looking at those but already invested in single dumbbells.

More than worth the investment, imo, just for the convenience and space saving. I was skeptical at first, figured I could always return them, but they are really well made. I have both sets, the ones that go up to 52 pounds and the ones that go up to 90. Both are very very good.

I have to go to a gym, or I won't do it.  Its only 125/year for me so the cost isn't all that great.

I'm the same way... I have zero motivation for working out at home.

Once I get in the car and go, I enjoy it... plus, except for the weekend, I just go straight from work so that makes it simple.

More power to those that can workout at home though, saves a lot of time.

The hardest thing for me is motivation to work out. What's LAME as fug is that I have a free gym and lap pool in my fuggin building and I still put it off all the time. How do some of you motivate yourself to work out daily, or multiple times a week?

For me it's just habit.  If I've been working out on a regular basis my body doesn't feel right if I don't.  If I get out of the habit it's hard to get back in it.

This year I have decided to forgo the gym membership and just work out at home. Anyone have success with this?

So far I have a nice incline/decline bench, dumbells, and a chinup bar. Those things alone provide tons of workout options.

Been working out at home most of my adult life- if youre short of time and dont want to spring the bucks for a gym membership, and dont view workouts as a time to socialize  it is definately the way to go. About a year and a half ago while cruising craigs list I found one of these

that the folks were GIVING away just to get it out of the garage - it was already disassembled with all the parts - all I had to do was load it up in the truck take it home and put it back together- took about a full day to do it, but using it in addition to my free weights has really upped my workout - so much easier and quicker to change weights and go from one exercise to another - and I finally got the old lady to start on weight lifting with it as well -  keep your eye on cl and you can find some real deals on gym equiptment.

Also there is nothing better for cardio than a good jumprope - I had to quit jumping when my feet finally gave out, but I found a great old concept 2 rowing machine also on CL for only $50 and I alternate days with it and my weights. Im in pretty darn good condition for a guy my age - hell even for someone half my age so yes its possible.

Good luck with it - working out at home isnt for everyone - you have to really be committed to it - its very difficult to push yourself some days when its just you and your shadow.  But you seem to be a self starter and ought to be able to make the transition.

I'm the same way.

I got a heart rate monitor for Christmas last year and set a goal to burn 100k calories in 2013. I destroyed it, though I did slow pace in the last quarter of the year. Now 100k cals may not seem like a ton to some guys on here but remember I'. 125ish pounds, so it's harder for me to burn calories.

    • To kick this up, The Athletic has a really comprehensive piece out where pretty much all QB questions are addressed. It is worth seeing.  https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7083539/2026/03/04/starting-quarterback-projections-free-agency-draft/?source=user_shared_article I’m putting something specific here but it should have a thread or something. It is an extensive exercise.  This is a dense write up with a lot of column inches used, about the Jets and Murray and Reich, all this stuff.. then it goes to backup QB and there is Dalton.  I am pasting that part: As for Dalton, Reich is installing the offense he was trying to run in Carolina in 2023 before he got fired, and Dalton was with the Panthers then; he’s an ideal option as a veteran backup to replace Taylor. Reich said this about Dalton in 2023: “The way he's throwing the football, the way he works through progressions, the way he handles the operation. … Since day one (when) he walked in the door, I'm like, 'This guy is starter-worthy.' You guys know I've said that all along. He's, in my opinion, one of the best 32 quarterbacks in the world.” ——— That’s true love lol. I never heard any of this. Pretty crazy I think, considering how the year went.   Anyway the dream is not dead. .
    • The Seahawks traded for wide receiver/returner Rashid Shaheed at the trade deadline. He proved to be a key acquisition. Shaheed returned a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns in the regular season and had a 95-yard kickoff return in the postseason. Shaheed, though, is scheduled for free agency. So, the 12 games he played, including the postseason, might be the extent of his time in Seattle. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Shaheed and the Seahawks are not close to an extension, and the expectation is that the two-time Pro Bowler will hit free agency. Shaheed has 153 receptions for 2,243 yards and 12 touchdowns in his four-year career to go along with three punt return touchdowns and a kickoff return touchdown. He ranks 13th on PFT’s top-100 free agents. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/report-rashid-shaheed-appears-headed-to-free-agency
