Eventually #89 will be told to leave. Get over it.

If you knock $4 million off the cap figure by reworking Smitty and move him in to the slot, I see a free agent and a rookie combination opening up the #1 WR spot.  The $4m plus maybe a bit more can be applied toward a pretty solid free agent.

I do not think either of us wanted this situation, but the failure of anyone to find WR talent since Smitty was drafted has put us in a bad situation.  I just do not think a 35-year old small speed WR is an option at #1 any more.  His contract, his age, the QB, needs, etc. all suggest that we are not using him the right way.

Agree 100% with everything you said about not utilizing him the right way, not a #1 etc. I just don't think you can replace 750 yards with minimal cap space. Even if we create 4 million in space that puts us around 11-12. You would have to act quickly to get any FA that's going to put up those numbers and you still have a critical need at LT, and we've already expressed interest in re-signing Ginn and Mitchell. Maybe I'm the only one who feels this way, but not enough money to go around imo.

I know--you are not the only one who feels that way--we are in a bit of a mess. In the slot, Smith, even at his age, could get 1000 yards.  Outside, he is really at a bit of a disadvantage.  Inside, I see his skill set being maximized.

Maybe the solution is improving the overall WR unit by creating a better chemistry.  "WR by committee" until someone steps up.

For some reason, I am not confident that we re-sign Mitchell.  I just think he will go for a big payday.  Maybe I am wrong--hope so.

Even if Smitty did reneg to stay in Charlotte, I don't see him giving up being thought of as #1 WR! He has only wanted another true WR to take the pressure off him.....he will still wants same or more looks! He wants the slot to pair up with lesser CBs, but he will still want his looks! Him in NE is a perfect fit as they will forget about Welker for a year! Hopefully there is truth to what Cracka said

Tend to agree, just commenting on Person and Voth saying Ginn and Mitchell are the next priorities for Gettleman.

Maybe you should get a grip since you're assuming thoughts that I don't even have. Just saying with the place that this franchise is in right now (minimal cap space, 28th pick in the Draft) it's not nearly as easy to replace 89 for 2014 as you're making it out to be.

I never said it would be easy at all. I just don't think it's worth all the doom and gloom if Steve does go which isn't guaranteed anyway it's just speculation, your right there aren't lists of guys who have left and been replaced easily of course not but there are examples of guys who come in took over the job and made an immediate impact.

People should just wait and see what happens that's all im saying, but if he does leave life stil goes on.

Except we don't have a guy named Terell Owens on our roster.

He posted this drivel in the other thread too, awful convenient to leave that fact about TO out.

I swear this guy must have been turned down by Steve Smith for an autograph.

Shut yo ass up before smith go to pats and put up 10,000 yards in one season YOLO

This is about as much sense as this post made.

Love to play devils advocate here. I have a feeling that if Smith goes anywhere else he's going to realize how much older he is.  He's not going to produce somewhere else like some of you guys think.   Not to mention he finished the season with a knee injury.  I don't know if Smith can go to another team and just be one of the "guys" in the locker room.   ]

Name one 35 yr old receiver that's gone to another team and put up big numbers?  When Smith leaves here...he's pretty much done.  If he's smart he'll go out on top.  His best chance for being productive is staying with a team that knows him inside and out.

When the 49ers cut Rice.....Rice never had a good year after he left.  TO was never good after the Cowboys. Randy Moss was toast after New England.  The only old receiver that produced decently while old was Joey Galloway....and that wasn't even on a number 1 level.

Hey though, if he wants to move his family and play for another team just to under perform and realize he's old....after being treated like a King for 11 years.......well fug him.  He'd rather be in LA then Charlotte anyway.

Hope he remembers to Ice Up before he plays us.

Why don't you look up Rice's stats after he left the 49ers  then tell me San Fran didnt make the right choice TO or not.

How did you miss the entire point? It's not about being right or wrong in moving on from the player, it's about having a viable replacement.

I didn't miss the point.  Viable replacement doesn't matter if your number 1 wr isn't viable.  As long as Smith's on the team he's not going to take a back seat and there will be no viable replacement on the roster.

What?

Okay, let's just start from the beginning. Who is your replacement, who is the guy you have in mind to replace him for 1-2 million a year?
