Why haven't we made Godfrey a June 1st cut yet?

I imagine they are being smart about it.

1.  How is he recovering from his injury?  (not sure about an injury settlement cut)

2.  As mentioned, what do we have at S?

3. Before creating dead money, ask him to take less--maybe $2m for a season on a one-year deal.  If he is released after an Achilles injury, he and his agent would have to have concerns that he might not be able to get another deal.

4.  There is time, and the benefit will not be realized until June--maybe we can use the savings to sign our rookies.

I don't know that the part about it not actually helping you until June is correct.

But, we're not into the league year yet, so it may not be possible.  They do let you sign players to 'futures' contracts (scrub guys) and come to terms with guys who you hold rights to, but we're still in league year 2013, and the nature of the June cut is that future proration goes into the next year.  Which is '14 until the year rolls over.

Besides the money that was the first thought for me. If for someone reason Mitchell doesn't work out, why throw away a backup plan when they don't have to right now? Godfrey coming back with a restructure would be the assumption if it panned out this way. 1 through 4 is accurate as well

He is correct on the June 1 impact.  The amount that is being moved to next year is not removed from your committed cap until June 2.  Therefore, the space does not help you sign FA's before that time.

I can't imagine that Godfrey will be able to come back this year from his achilles injury meaning if he isn't in our long term plans we would be paying him for nothing.  As Magnus said we might not be able to release him as a June 1st cut until the new year begins.  But I am clear it won't help the cap until June 2nd and I can't believe he will be healthy for this year unless his achilles injury was not completely ruptured.  I know some linemen can come back sooner but when speed and cutting ability is a primary issue, who comes backs in less than a year without significant drop off in power and speed.

Interesting article about returns from achilles injuries in the NFL.

Unless I'm missing something his dead money is more than his cap hit this year, I can't imagine us cutting a player at a position of need when it doesn't save us money. After this year though I have no idea.

You know, what if we managed to convince Godfrey to take a pay cut and move to CB?

I know he has found marginal success at FS, but he won't receive much money in the FA market this offseason, especially with the strong DBs in this years draft.

Here's my take:

Godfrey entered the draft as a CB.

The Panthers moved him to FS to fill the void left by Mike Minter.

He should be able to move back to CB, and with his height at 6'0" he would definitely be an upgrade over the CBs that we would be able to afford.

Also, why wouldn't he want to be a part of this team? It is on the way up, and he has shown the ability to be a leader on the team.

I know this extremely unlikely, but I would like to see it happen because I feel that Godfrey could be a good CB in this league, especially considering his height. The question is, can he make the transition back to CB from FS?

the total dead money, in a way, doesn't matter.  The 2014 part of his proration counts no matter what happens.  SO it's 2014 salary v/s the accelerated part in '15, '16.

Who has a link to the part where you don't get the savings until June 2?  That's pretty stupid, if so.

Would love to give you one but either this forum or my work computer wont let me copy and paste a link.

I found it on a few websites just by googling "the panthers designate as a june 1st cut"

Hope he agrees to a reduced contract.  Coming off an injury, it may be necessary for him to continue playing in the league.  I think he would be great depth or he could compete at SS.  He has experience at both.

godfrey was radio a few weeks ago, his tone was that of a 2014 panther. whether don agrees, but his plan was playing football and he preferred it be with the panthers.

im sure he knows coming off a ach injury with a high cap number, its either redo his deal(cheap) or get cut.

keeping godfrey and resigning mm, safty is done minus some udfa/street guys for lester comp.
