Things we know about Gman!

He seems to be very direct and a man of his word, that said, let's review!

1)Draft BPA-proven! Which means we will not go into the draft "looking" for our starting LT!

2)Fill all roster holes via Free Agency-proven! Not to say he won't pick up some more players after June 1st cuts!

3)We are cap strapped-true! Only obvious relief is with June 1st cuts!

Now, restructures are bad, unless equipped with void clauses. Essentially, a restructure is moving base salary to guaranteed money the following year(s). We know we don't have enough money to sign our draft picks, minus the free agents to fill the holes. We know his philosophy is fill holes with Free Agents! That being said, something big is about to come out of Charlotte that has us freeing up cap space!

Only logical immediate choices(add more if you see them)-

1)Extend CJ-same core deal, just over a long span......guarantee more of the money. CJ would make out better being a June 1st cut so he has no incentive to extend other than taking one for the team!

2)Sign Hardy to a long term deal-obviously they aren't on the same page or would've been done.

3)Trade Hardy for draft picks!

Kalil, JStew, and Dwill have already restructured....meaning no solutions there. Nothing substantial can be done at the moment with anyone else! A lot can happen with June 1st cuts. But something has to happen now in order for Gman to follow his team building philosophy.......so which is it?

Couple of clarifications.  Restructures aren't bad and adding void years is not good.  Some contracts are designed to help with short term cap situations and are designed to be restructured.  Smitty's contract for one.  Given that we are dumping 17 million in dead cap space and the cap is going up substantially the next 2 years, restructures are not going to hurt us as long as we don't do it all the time.  Void years like we did with Gross are not good things because it lowers the cap in one year but when we void the contract the money accelerates and leaves us with a big dead cap issue.  The 17 million is due to primarily Beason restructuring (8 million) and Gross when the contract voided left us with a 5 million dead cap issue.

 

If we extend Johnson we need to be straight with him and give him some guaranteed money but like Gross tell him if he doesn't take less he is gone after this year    He got plenty of guaranteed money and his cap hit of 16 million this year and 17 million next year is crazy for the production we got. If you restructure you just guarantee a 20 million cap in 2015 which makes him a prime candidate to release given his dead cap money next year is 6 million IIRC.  He will be here this year because the dead cap space and his normal cap hit are both 16 million.

Cant you designate 2 players a june 1st cut at anytime? Just have to wait until after june 1st until it hits the cap?

 Olsen isn't a prime candidate to restructure again since his contract only runs through 2015 and you are simply putting more money onto next year when his cap is already 8 million likely to go up to 9 or 10 million.  Unless you don't see him in the long term plans.  If you do then you extend him another 2 or 3 years and roll this contract into that one and reduce the cap hit going forward while retaining his services.

Aren't we like $110mil towards the cap already in 2015? Without Cam and Luke's deals? How much dead money is already accounted for next year?. I expect the cap to be around $150 next year so will allow us breathing space.

I agree, no real incentive to June 1st cut CJ! You do gain a lot of cap space but also tie up a lot of dead space, only cause his contract is 50/50ish Base to Prorated Bonus! We can only hope he goes for an extension of current deal, laced with some more guaranteed!

Looking at it, nobody is really a candidate for restructure that majorly frees up money we need! Only options I see are the 3 I presented! The cap going up makes it easier to re-sign Cam, Luke, Star, and Short! That's the way I view it.....not a safe haven for restructures! At some point we have to let a big contract go, question is.....when?
