Question for Steve haters

Opinions can't change over time and under different circumstances? To me having the ability to alter your viewpoint when confronted with new information is a sign of emotional and intellectual maturity.

Thanks for making my point. Or misunderstanding it altogether. To be clear, there are those here who want him to stay come hell or high water but were probably the same people who defended him wanting to leave because we weren't very good.

Hokay. I don't think the two situations draw as easy a comparison. I also think there's a lot of misplaced anger regarding how this has unfolded.

All this talk about loyalty takes me back to 2010 when Steve Smith went to JR's house asking to be traded and dealt to a SUper Bowl conteneder (Chargers, Baltimore).  Would love to dig some old threads up from the Huddle when that happened.  Sure there are some who are singing a different tune today.

This is where i stand... We have to do what we feel is best for the team. Smith makes more money than he contributes at this point. Always been a Smitty fan but a few years ago he made a decision that was best for him and asked to be traded. At this point we feel it is in our best interest to no longer go forward with him.

Hope one day he realizes it was nothing personal, all business. It would be disappointing to me and most of our fan base if he held it against us because he truly does deserve a statue one day for his contributions to this franchise, fans, and community.

It's not exactly a new thing. Up until the day he was released, a large part of the board had their tongues so far up Hurney's ass they could taste breakfast. Once he was shitcanned, everyone always knew what a total fuging moron the guy was, what the fug did you expect with a SPORTS WRITER playing GM, etc. etc.

You're just seeing the same with Gettleman now. Yesterday, you were a moron if you didn't recognize Smith as a force and our best receiver. ICE UP SOOOOON! Today you're a moron if you don't see the benefit of cutting Smith who let's be honest is overrated and a total dickbag and never taught anyone anything and is a selfish asshole who wont play for $12.50 an hour to help the team and so on.

First off, very few folks up in here were hurney lovers. He was a scourge on this franchise for many a year.

Second, Your sarcastic, hopefully, assessment of Smitty's character is offensive to say the least.

Lastly. Without first hand knowledge, any speculation of Smitty's place is just that, speculation. Please try and keep your fear and prejudice to a minimum.

Believe it or not. There are folks that revere Smitty. You cannot discount that feeling. No matter how hard you try.

Defending Smitty three years ago when it looked as though teh Jimmey was going to be his QB? Yeah. I was one. Saying otherwise is just asinine. Com'on man. No one wanted to play for us then. But hellz...nice try.

I don't think it is fair to call anyone a "Steve hater".  There are just differing opinions about his value in the twilight of his career.

Most folks love Smitty. Then again, most folks hate the contract. separating the two is where the problem lies.

I don't and nobody does (except G-man and Smity). But it doesn't matter. Cutting him does not help clear up cap room, and there's no other reason to cut him. Even if he did refuse, we'd still be much better off keeping him than cutting him.

He may think he has the best interests, but he's strictly business and may not understand how much Smitty means to the team emotionally. He doesn't have to be emotionally invested, but the team and many many of the players ARE emotionally invested, and he needs to understand that. And so do many here--it's not just the fans that are emotionally invested. I bet you anything Rivera is invested emotionally to some degree as well, even only being here 3 seasons. Him getting flat out cut would have a huge domino effect on the outlook of the players going forward, and it would completely hinder our chances at repeating our success of this year. Smith may not be putting up 1,000 yard seasons and 10+ tds, but he makes big plays in big situations. 4th and 10 against the Dolphins.... Against the 49ers in the playoffs... He is a huge part of the team and being without him would be a nightmare.

Everyone keeps talking about the cap hit... And are ignoring the fact that Steve was set to be paid several very large roster bonuses. Millions of dollars. That is real money out the door.

Comprehension is a fickle bitch here in the Huddle.

I want to see some visual evidence from just one of you geniuses that, prior to Gettleman's comments, suggested cutting him for cap reasons as a good idea. Otherwise, I will assume you are simply supporting this move of the guy behind it (Gettleman) and not because of the reasoning behind it.

It was in fact brought up last off season that to legitimately move forward......we need to move on from old players like 89. Not bc they couldn't play but would hold back the the new players/era from fully taking over.

It wasn't popular last offseason. Isn't now with some.

89 is due $10M against the cap in '15,  and $12M against the cap in '16.

This is why we're cutting a 35 year old receiver who isn't what he used to be.  Anything else can be worked with.  Leadership, attitude, etc.  We're cap challanged.  This is how you don't stay cap challanged.

Yes.

I love Smitty--his fire, his attitude--it is very rare.  However, I see this as a smart move.  I suppose it depends on your heart vs. brain.

Who the hell in their right mind would hate on Steve Smith?  The man is THE Panther legend.  No one compares.  There just comes a time in a players career where their production doesn't match their salary.  That day is today for Steve.  I wish he could stay for a cheaper rate but that's just not how the business works.  Nothing but respect for SS.
