I only see 5 that I would take over Smith.  Explain to me how he is over paid again??

He's overpaid, but that doesn't mean those others aren't either. He should take a pay cut, but only if there is a better receiver on the roster. Right now there isn't. If he's our best wr he should be paid like it. It's not his fault they've done a piss poor job at the position. If we sign Nicks there is more leverage to get him to reduce that number.

If he were only going to be getting paid that much next season, he wouldn't be overpaid. It's what happens when his '15 and '16 gets that gets gaudy numbers. Basically, if he is on the roster after June 1st, I think his numbers go automatically on the books, whether we cut him or not, for 9 million in '15 and something even stupider like 12 miil for '16.

I don't think anyone has a problem with him getting paid 5 mil next season...it's what happens after that because of the dead money and cap hit that will kill us in trying to re-sign cam, Luke or anybody else for that matter.

Basically, we're pretty much screwed if we either a) don't get Smitty off the books before June 1st or b) he won't restructure.

I love Steve Smith to death.  His Jersey  is the only one outta the 4 I own that I've worn to every game, but the facts are this-

He is still a solid receiver.  No where near as great as he was a few years ago though.  Story book ending would be for him to go out on his own terms but the facts are that we have to have a changing of the guard and there are many receivers on that list that are in their primes.    The only ones I'd have no interest in are Hartline, Washington, Jennings ( past prime)    Johnson ( at this stage / good reciever but in the same boat as Smith but hurt alot.Amendola and others to many to name and to hard to read the list but-

Most of  all the other receivers are still legit #1's imo

If he stays it's 7 this coming season, 9 in 2015 and 12 in 2016 without redoing it. 4 million is base but there is another 3 that kicks in on July 1.

Sent from my SCH-I535 using CarolinaHuddle mobile app

Those are all base salary deals.....so...none of those number included bonuses.

    • Are you arguing that his height deficiencies and footwork within the pocket have not been a present issue clearly seen on his game tape particularly in the games he struggled in? Because that's simply denying what everyone in this fanbase who have watched the games have seen. It's interesting how hardline BY fans here quickly and effortlessly pivot from whailing about being victimized to becoming the aggressor and hurling out allegations of bias and hatred. And at the end of the day while Bryce Young clearly improved significantly from the first two games of the season the reality of the situation is he still finished 42nd in yards per pass attempt behind Mac Jones and tied with Caleb Williams and 38th in passing yards per game behind the likes of Gardner Minshew Aidan O'Connell Drake Maye and Will Levis. Furthermore it took Bryce Young 23 games to surpass Panthers legend Kyle Allen's 13 games worth of passing yardage in 2019. So if your argument is he became a head and shoulders better passer over the course of the second half of the season the reality is we're still waiting to see that growth this season. And there is nothing controversial or vitriolic about saying so in the mind of a rational
    • Cam regularly threw for less than 200 yards and nobody questioned he was elite. He averaged 219 yds per game for his career.  You seem to be way too hung up on yards as a stat.  By that definition Jameis Winston should have been MVP by now.
    • So... what metrics for production do you believe display these issues/limitations best? Are we only using total passing yards, height, and weight thresholds? If so, then what are those thresholds?
