10 Players (only 7 on the roster) are eating 85.3 Million in 2014 cap space

Because we can cut him at any time and not cost us anything, when you have players like that no need to rush things.

Actually, his remaining bonus money would still go against the cap! Cutting him outright would still cost us, even tho we would still gain cap space! Everyone wondered why Gman carried 6 million over from last year.....think if he hadn't! He knows what the fug he is doing, despite what the media says!

Wait we still have to pay Jordan Gross? After he retired? If he voluntarily drops his own contract it doesn't seem right that the team has to keep paying him. Weird rules.

He didn't drop his contract, he was a free agent. The cap hit that we're still suffering from is a result of the restructure last year. He signed a multi-year deal but it was designed to void after one year.

He converted most of his base to a signing bonus, which allowed them to amortize the hit over five years. It was done to save space last season, but pushed the liability to future years.

How do we still take hits on someone who retires.

Not only did he retire, he voided his contract.  But from what I'm reading, if there is any portion of the signing bonus left un paid to Gross than that money counts all at once for the year that the player was cut/traded/retired.  So from my basic understanding is that we still owe them money based off of their signing bonuses not being fully paid.  Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Future dead money:

Stew (cut in 2017, yes he's here that long) Saves 3.31 on the cap with 2.19 Dead

Dlo (contract ends in 2016) Saves 0 on the cap with 2.26 Dead

Olsen (contract ends in 2016) Saves 0 on the cap with 1.2 Dead | Yes you can cut in 2015 to save 2.25 in cap, but I think he stays

CJ (contract really ends in 2016 with 0 Dead, but can be cut/extended in 2015) Cut in 2015 Saves 11.42 on the cap with 6.0 Dead

Kalil (contract runs out in 2017) Saves 0 on the cap with 3.35 Dead

Godfrey - look for him to be June 1'd for a savings of ~5 now and 3.2 Dead in 2015. BUT he could take a pay cut and hold off any Dead hits

Tolbert - not underwater with his contract

TD (contract ends in 2016) Saves 0 on the cap with 3.0 Dead

2014 total to this point: 23.0

scheduled 2015 dead money:

Smitty: 4.0

If June 1'd Godfrey 3.2

If CJ cut out right 6.0

Total: 13.2

scheduled 2016 dead money:

Dlo 2.26

Olsen 1.2

TD 6.0

Total: 9.46

scheduled 2017 dead money:

Stew 2.19

Kalil 3.35

Total: 5.54

This thread raises questions like how teams like Raiders, Cowboys, and others that over pay players on a yearly basis get away with doing so and still signing free agents lol

They don't get stupid with the signing bonuses! Hurney did it to keep guys on a 2-14 team. At some point, got to let them walk! The saying, "Build through the draft", is so damn vital! Prime Ex., Quinn for St.louis, 15million dollar production on a 2mil yearly contract!

Any of you grasp how much we are gonna have to pay Cam, Luke, and Star? Cutting Smith is part of the prep for that day! Luke, DRoY and DPoY, will command MAJOR dollars. And no, he isn't gonna accept lower than market value cause we are good fans! All football players have a window to make as much as possible for whoever pays

Hardy was on the team when CJ got paid! Now Hardy wants same, plus some, and doesn't care that Hurney is gone! CJ is not gonna give his up for Hardy. 30+mil in 2 players! I don't envy Gman. Thank god he can find system guys on the cheap

Wait can someone explain to me why beason and gross are still getting money from us? If you trade a player that team gets his contract from you as well( that's my understanding anyway) and gross retired so we shouldn't owe him anything

Signing Bonus is paid upfront, but pro rated over life of contract to be team friendly. Player gets cut or traded, well they still have that money. Team accepting player is just taking on base salary. Jerry Jones could pay/sign each FA 100mil and cut/trade after a year with no penalty. Salary Cap doesn't work!

Gross hit is from restructure. Base salary was converted to guaranteed last year! He got paid, so we still have to count it against our books

ok thanks for the help. So if money is guaranteed there is no way to get around it?

People need to understand that cutting Smitty was the lesser evil this year! Still an evil and did nothing this year for us but really helps out for 2016/17. When Cam and Luke come into play!

Signing ALLL of our "core" players with "backloaded" and heavily guaranteed contracts at the SAME time was bad.....real bad.

Exactly! It's divided up over the life of the contract as long as the player is on the team. Once cut/traded/retired then remaining hits cap space all at once, with exception of June 1st, that hits the cap following year.

Guaranteed money is paid up front, has to be counted against books somehow
