How does Gross still count against us if he retired?

Guaranteed money will count against the cap at some point or another regardless. Bonus is paid up front and is applied over multiple years until they are traded or cut...in which it smacks you all at once.

My problem is nobody tried to work with Smitty to figure something out. Which tells me that even if Gettles will say it was "both cap and locker room related," it really was primarily locker room related. He didn't want Smith on the team.... I understand it can help us in the long term but I wish it had been handled differently

You don't know that. You weren't in on the process

lol @ James Anderson still counting against our cap.

What the actual fug is going on.

totally thought he'd be off the books by now. with how bad those rb contracts are, anderson's hardly gets mentioned here, but damn -  this one's up there with the best them ....paying a WILL that kind of money....

All that signing bonus Beason was given! Nice job Hurney!

Did you see the cap hit we would take cutting Stewart if we did so this year?

Something close to 18million. Keep peddling that bike Stew

Stewart and his agent must be laughing their asses off.

I don't, but Smitty's agent has said as much, and now you're going to tell me Smitty is the kind of guy that is going to let his agent lie like that?  I don't agree.  If Smitty felt he deserved more (edit: than what gettles thought he should get), he would have said that, and the fans likely would have agreed with him anyway.

So what year do we actually get out of cap hell?

2017 if we start making the hard cuts and eating the dead money now. We started the process with Smitty! Dwill will possibly be next year once Anderson and Beason come off the Books! Don't care how good Dwill does this year....he is GONE! Stew will be year after that! Hopefully Gettleman can come up with some way to extend CJ to better, fairer deal

Man, why the hell does contracts work that if you trade a guy like beason he still can take a chunk of your cap space. I don't understand why contracts would be designed that way.

Well, 1) you have to give signing bonuses or you don't get the players.  That is the main thing they look for.  And 2) posters are always hollering "restructure, restructure".  Well to do that you convert salary to guess what ... signing bonus.  The player gets the money up front, and the team has to take the cap hit at some point.  The NFL doesn't allow what you give a player to automatically disappear.

Smitty let it be known he wasn't going to take less or restructure. He came out smelling like a rose, if you consider the millions we will be paying him, plus what Patriots will be paying him.I bet he is laughing all the way to the bank.

Uhh... I think you're confused, especially considering Smith isn't playing for the Patriots.
