Jawnyblaze Panthers Mock Draft

Figured I'd do a mock now and maybe another shortly before the draft if my opinions significantly change. Here we go:

Round 1

Donald Cooks, WR, OSU

The Situation: The big 3 OTs will be gone. Ebron will be gone. Watkins, Evans, Lee, OBJ and maybe Benjamin will be gone. Gilbert and Dennard will be gone.

The pick: I'm not as high on Cooks as many, but I do think he's a legit 1st round talent. I also don't think he's definitely gonna be gone before we pick like many do. As many "NFL sized" legit WRs are in this draft, I don't think a team is as likely to reach for Cooks like the Rams did last year with Austin. I do think Cooks can be a deadly weapon if used properly, he's got good hands and lightning quick feet - similar to Austin.

Alternate: Jordan Matthews, WR, Vanderbilt

Round 2

I take you hate the word Brandin(on) whenever used and prefer Donald instead?  Just joking.

Our first round pick is probably going to see Cooks or OBJ or Benjamin there so I am good with Cooks

Good with Turner

As far as where they are picked, I am thinking you might have to switch your 3rd and 4th rounders with each other.

Taking a chance on Henderson will be up to our staff and their assessments on whether he can be trusted to PLAY

Very good draft actually and if the 5th and 6th rounders panned out, could be incredibly good for the Panthers in a year or so.

Id rather have OBJ over Cooks. Cooks just looks so damn small both height and weight wise.

Praying to God we get Turner, however I have a feeling people are gonna come around on him and ****** him up in the early to mid 2nd.

I like Coleman, but I like the idea of drafting Bell's replacement even more. Id go RT in the 3rd.

For late round CB's  I like SJB, Desir, Aikens, and McGill. So I am fine with that.

Henderson, I am unsure of. Just seems to massive. Plus I would have drafted a RT in the 3rd so...

Like Martin.

Shaw isn't bad as well.

Overall, I give your mock a

B+ (If Cooks pans out)

The Donald/Brandon joke still hasn't gotten old to me. I find it hilarious :)

I'd probably prefer OBJ personally, but I think he might be the 4th or 5th WR taken and go before our pick. I'd also prefer Matthews, but since I was planning on taking Coleman later I figured the speedier "weapon" made sense with the other WR selection.

Kareem Martin will get taken by the 4th round I believe. His potential will be too much for a team to resist. He has desirable measurables. I've seen some mocks where he is gone by mid-second. Granted it's all conjecture at this point, but good prototypical 4-3 ends are few and far between in this draft imo. Only Clowney, Ealy, Crichton, and Martin look the part.

I like the Cooks, Turner, Coleman, and Henderson picks.  I like Martin and Shaw as well, but no way Martin is available in the 6th.  He's projected to be a 2nd round pick, and as for Shaw, we just signed DA for 2 more years.  Doubt we waste a draft pick on a QB.  If by some chance Shaw is there as an UDFA, then TAKE HIM.

Here's my updated mock draft:

Round 1 - Brandin Cooks, WR, Oregon St

Instant starter at the slot.  Shifty and quick....the next Steve Smith.  (If not available - Kelvin Benjamin, Allen Robinson, or BPA)

Round 2 - Billy Turner, OT, North Dakota St

He would make the two deep right away.  Would provide much needed depth at LT.  (If not available - Joel Bitonio)

Round 3 - Cody Latimer, WR, Indiana

This guy's draft stock has sky rocketed as of lately.  Ran a 4.38 and is listed as 6'3 215.  A MUST GET (If not available - Brandon Coleman or BPA)

Round 4 - Seantrel Henderson, OT, Miami

Depth at RT, monster of a guy.  A future starter.  (If not available - Ju'Waun James, James Hurst, or BPA)

Round 5 - Michael Sam, DE, Missouri

Many won't like this pick, but if CJ is gone, we need to start prepping for another DE.  Sam would be the best available and the cheapest.  (If not available - BPA)

Round 6 - Ross Cockrell, CB, Duke

Very underrated CB.  Would provide depth (If not available - BPA)

Round 7 - Howard Jones, OLB, Shepherd

I'm very high on this guy.  We need LB depth and he will provide it.  I have Jones being TD's replacement in the future. (If not available - BPA)

*I would focus on getting a RB as UDFA.  Should be plenty to choose from.
