CHARLOTTE – Veteran safety Thomas DeCoud, a 2012 Pro Bowler for the Atlanta Falcons, has signed a two-year contract with the Panthers.

"Thomas provides a veteran in the secondary who is familiar with the NFC South and has been a very solid player," head coach Ron Rivera said. "We are pleased to add him to a safety group that has good experience and production."

A third-round draft choice by the Falcons in 2008 out of California, DeCoud started all but two games from 2009-13, intercepting 14 passes over his six seasons in Atlanta while amassing 507 tackles and 29 passes defensed. He topped 100 tackles in each of his first three seasons as a starter before making the Pro Bowl following the 2012 season on the strength of a career-high six interceptions.

DeCoud had 83 tackles this past season and recorded his first career touchdown with a 30-yard return of a fumble. He became a free agent when the Falcons released him March 11.

DeCoud is the third defensive back – the second with Pro Bowl credentials - that played for another team last season to sign with the Panthers over the last three-and-a-half weeks. The others are safety Roman Harpericon-article-link.gif – a two-time Pro Bowler in eight seasons with the New Orleans Saints - and veteran cornerback Antoine Casonicon-article-link.gif, a first-round pick in 2008 who has never missed an NFL game.

It's been a busy few days for the Panthers, who re-signed defensive tackle Colin Coleicon-article-link.gif and signed wide receiver Jason Avanticon-article-link.gif and tight end Ed Dicksonicon-article-link.gif earlier in the week.

    • Like your sense of humor.  The answers we seek often lies in the question we ask.
    • This is going to be one of the more competitive camps we've had at WR in awhile... The only locks are XL, TMac, and AT. Coker and Horn Jr both have strong chances at making it. I can see David Moore being WR6. Renfrow might be the WR7 if they decide to carry that many, or he could join Dan Chisena on the PS (who gets stashed to help on ST more than at WR).
    • Sure, but I have long acknowledged he got better.  He went from horrific to mid-lower end starter.  But now you can’t say that…..you got people wanting to spin top 10 play if you look at it this way, great deep ball passer if you only acknowledge x.   I mean the headline in that article is nice for fans to run with.   But in reality Bryce Young was not the best deep passer in week 12.  Far from it.  He went 2 of 7 with no TDs deep.  The week was full of guy who went something along the lines of 3 of 4 with a bomb TD.   So Bryce then gets appointed best deep passer for say….plays like a 50/50 jump ball while trailing late to a fully covered AT that goes incomplete but could have been something given how the defender played it….not an actual good play.  But that could have been a good play.  I mean, same play could have been a pick if everything else was the same and the defender who had AT blanketed played the ball better (nothing changes for Bryce in terms of what he did.  It’s just a 50/50ish ball to someone covered)….and his entire best deep passer week 12 is built off plays that never happened over guys that actually got it done.   we should be happy Bryce with from shouldn’t of been drafted play to serviceable starter last year.  But all this spin that he is somehow actually sneaky great just ain’t something I’m doing yet
