John Clayton Weighs in on our talent at Receiver

I mean let's be honest though. Our WRs weren't very good. Our highest expectation for LaFell was that he might be a good number 2 one day. Smitty is great but old and a guy who does his own thing. Ted Ginn was a nice deep threat but he's not a complete receiver. And Hixon had like one catch.

Granted we aren't replacing them with much better, but let's not kid ourselves that we just lost Jerry Rice, Cavlin Johnson, Julio Jones, and AJ Green here.

Anyone not a panthers fan is saying the exact same thing. Nothing he said was false, and I think many here believe getting some WRs in the draft should be a priority. All he said was that if this is it, it might be rough. Who can honestly disagree with that?

Sure, but why avoid the crucial and obvious point?  They are going to address it in the draft and this is the best draft in years for receivers.

Good positioning.

I believe he did say they needed to get some help in the draft. There is no guarantees that they will draft a WR so how or why would he report it? We can sit here and say it all day long, but until they actually draft one, it's just hope and assumptions.

Clayton has supported this team and not to mention it's current QB for years when nobody else did.

lol at Huddlers running him through the friar because he's not being all "smart and reserved and collected" and toting our comany line about how everything is just peachy.

"Sure yeah we lost out top 4 WRs without a replacement lined up, but havent you evuh herd of teh GettleMAGIK!!"

    • Posted before in this thread, he broke his leg late in 2015 after being dominant in the slot that year too, pretty sure that injury prompted us to sign Finnegan out of retirement (who to his credit was great as a late season injury replacement off the street). Not that it would've made much of a difference in the SB anyways with our OL getting killed, but we got absolutely decimated by injury at CB late that year with Bene breaking his leg and I think Peanut Tillman tore his achilles or something in like week 16. That was rough.  But yeah Bene was truly a great slot corner, one of the best in the league, before that injury. Then in 2016 he came back out of shape and without the agility he had before and was just not good. Rivera inexplicably matched him against Julio without any adjustments that game and then we cut him. He had declined enough anyways but I hardly blame him for the Julio game. Dude was a slot corner who was already struggling that year, not someone you matchup against a guy who at the time was easily a top 3-5 WR in the league, if not the best...
    • Bene got scapegoated for that game. Literally. I think we cut him like a day or two after that game. He looked really good as a rookie but then had an injury that I can't recall exactly what it was and was just never the same after that.
