What if we use the draft to help the future CAP?

Just something I have been thinking about for the past couple of days. We have worked out DE Kony Ealy, DE Scott Crichton, C Marcus Martin, TE Eric Ebron, TE CJ Fiedorowicz, and some other prospects.

This is just a curiosity posed to you, but what if Gettleman were using this draft to get out from under big contracts next year because he doesn't see some of the players as part of the core?

For instance, drafting Ealy in round 1 and parting ways with one of either Johnson or Hardy next year. Or drafting Marcus Martin in round 2 to replace Kalil next year and drafting Fiedorowicz in round 3 to be the replacement for Olsen in a year or so.

What would your reaction to this line of thinking/drafting be? Obviously some need areas would have to be ignored in order for this to happen, which would enrage the fanbase initially, but would you see this as a smart move in the long run?

I only ask because there is a high probability that at least one of these guys could be the BPA at one of our picks, and a slight chance that 2 could be there in the first 3 rounds. And if we do go BPA, this could be part of a plan falling into place for the future.

I'd be totally against replacing Kalil. Find his back up? Sure but he is the best Center the game and he'll be able to play for a while.

I could see Hardy if we don't get a long term deal done but I think it would be best to just draft a DE next year when we really need to replace him. We have to get Cam weapons this year no dancing around that.

Talk about reading too much into things.

The team is doing due diligence like it does every year. Doesn't mean they are thinking but cutting important pieces to the football team.

This is merely hypothetical. I'm not suggesting that this is the case, but more, what if it were.

I hope not, we have some pretty glaring holes to fill as it is. We drafted CJ and Hardy with 3rd and 6th rounders, granted Hardy fell a bit, he was previously highly rated but that kinda thing seems to happen every year, take Lee for example this year. I think you could target someone like Jeffcoat at DE later in the draft or Anthony Johnson at DT.

Honeslty, if Ealy is the pick at 28 i'll be pretty damn mad.

Looking at who we've been linked to pre-draft (13WR, 5QB, 5S, 4OT, 4LB, 4CB, 3DE, 2TE, 2OG, 2DT, 1C) I don't see the connection. I think Getts has made it clear that he just wants good football players and he'll take the best come our turn.

If it were true, we're in trouble (but I don't think this is this case). Again, Getts has been pretty transparent thus far. if we get someone in one of the positions you mentioned, I would take it in great faith that the player had the highest grade on our draft board.

This is the kind of thread that freaks people out, and it seems like most have calmed down after last month. so thanks... ;)

What board have you been reading? Haha. I'm not trying to stir the pot really, but it would just be interesting if some of these BPAs we could run into are conflicting with guys that have massive contracts. Would Gettleman see it as an opportunity? Would it be of interest to the team's long-term outlook? Interesting questions, I think.

    • Sometimes its fun to read the threads/posts.  The panthers could literally hire a groundskeeper and we'd have a thread "improving the field for no other reason to prop up Bryce Young".  Apparently no move is ever done to actually make the team better.  All a conspiracy to just focus on Bryce Young. Or suddenly daydreaming and reminiscing about Sam Darnold when he was hated more than Bryce Young.  Its really fun to do a message board search about Darnold during that time period.   Or thinking there is just a tree that grows QB, and you can just easily go up and pluck one.
    • Yeah okay. We as an organization have been more patient with him than many. And there has been a small parade of guys drafted since he was, also to bad teams, that have passed him. Some have lapped him. As a fan I am out of patience but he gets this year it is out of my hands always has been. I just hope the bar is higher than it has been for him.    FWIW, XL dropped two passes last year. He did do some other bad stuff, just saying.
    • Except it takes those QB's a few years to develop because they needed to learn the mental side of the game and have it catch up to their physical attributes. Bryce was supposed to be a QB savant who already had a fully developed mental side of the game and that was going to make up for his lack of physical ability.  And his lack of NFL level QB physical traits has been clear as day to anyone who has watched him the last 3 years, mainly, he just doesn't have an NFL arm, he can't zip the ball into tight spaces or throw on a line down the field like is needed at this level.
