Zod's Official Panthers Mock Draft Rounds 1-3

Here we are folks, two weeks out from the draft. I have crunched the numbers and applied out proprietary algorithm.

The following is a spoiler alert.

Round 1 - Morgan Moses - OT - Virginia

The departure of Desean Jackson in Philly solidifies their Brandin Cooks selection, who was previously my pick for the Panthers. Moses may be best at right tackle, which would make for much camp intrigue. Could the Panthers really be considering Byron Bell at left tackle? Could be. Bonus: The Moses selection would open up the floodgates for corny Old Testament puns from our tired local media.

Round 2 - Marcus Roberson - CB - Florida

This is a classic best player available pick. Yes, wide receiver is a huge need, but cornerback is not far behind. Roberson is a value at pick 60. He won the starting job at Florida as a true freshman. He could be a day 1 starter as well, which is all you can ask for from a second round pick.

Round 3 - Jared Abbrederis - WR - Wisconsin

Abbrederis is the best route runner in the draft. Under the tutelage of Ricky Proehl he will develop into a reliable clutch possession receiver. This kid is first and foremost a football player, and Gettleman is a guy that appreciates that. Abbrederis is as close to pro ready as any WR in this draft.

If we pick marcus roberson in the 2nd round i will lose all faith in our drafting ability. the guy was riddled with injuries and runs a 4.6 as a CB, which isnt exactly bad but its not speed you would like in a 2nd round CB. He would be far from the BPA at 60, i dont know where you get that information.

Abbrederis is rated as a 4th or 5th rounder too.. this is the most Hurney draft board ive seen since 2010

Not feeling this.

Moses, yes ok.

Roberson, i question his effort.

Abbrederis, maybe a number 2? we already have many 2 and 3's on the roster and you can get them every year in FA and the draft.

This gets a D+ to C- at best. IF Roberson turns out to be a stud then a B. Abbrederis in the 3rd when we can get some good OL kills this draft imo.

There isn't a #1 that will produce this season anywhere near our selection.

The other guys we do have not are on short contracts.

We need to draft a solid 2.

I am not going to crucify a man for sticking his neck out there with his mock draft--even if he picks Moses.  I think the biggest challenge is not to criticize because his picks do not fit my vision, but to look at these moves from a different perspective.

Abbrederis is the kind of WR people fall in love with because he is ready to go day 1.  Route running is a valuable commodity in the NFL, a skill many do not develop and many fans do not notice--they just think the QB threw another bad ball. Proehl will value his hands, his ability to beat the jam, and his routes. WRs bust so often because we value the wrong things going in.

If you think he is a low fourth or fifth rounder, watch the Ohio State game vs. Roby.

I will add that I think round 2 will be loaded with WRs, but if Rivera is true to his word about not needing a true #1, then Abbrederis might be a great pick in the third round.

It's even questionable he will be a solid #2. Porb more reasonable to think we will be a good (better than solid) slot guy / #3.

Yes our Wr's are on short contracts but that is irrelevant. The point is we have them, can extend them, and easily replace them every year. #2's are fairly easy to come by.

We dont really have the luxury to be drafting a WR in the 3rd who is a #3 or #2 at best, when we have major OL issues.

Even if you were to take a WR in the 3rd, he needs to atleast have potential to be a #1.

The 3rd will be prime spot to secure another decent - solid T ie Fleming, Turner, Hurst, Richardson, James, Mewhort, etc.

    • It's a failing of most first time HCs. I get an OC not being a defensive expert but they do play the other side every week so it always amazes me that poop slides so often. First year? Sure but as time goes on they need to be a HC and have a balanced and good team in the end. They went offense for that reason and the QB issues the team had. They had to go WR again this year because they failed so hard last year at that position in the first. That's on both the HC and GM on that miss IMO. This year they went out and got a bunch of free agents and drafted more on the D. It just doesn't appear they did it well again. Add in keeping Evero and missing out on an expensive free agent, thankfully but it would have lessened the cap gap in spending, it's not like they didn't try. It's more of an issue of competency than cap. Building around Evero after last year is damning for thr GM and HC. That's the biggest issue. They just didn't do any of it well. Now they have some younger talent and I don't think there is a decent coach in that house.
    • Inside linebacker is basically non existent. And that goes against everything that has been Carolina Panthers for a couple decades now. And that is just one such area that has suffered as we have paid through the nose to build up our offense around a bad investment.
    • Thats why its going to suck spending another top 10 pick on a qb instead of an elite Lb, pass rusher or whatever.  but it what it is and you have to have a qb to win in this league
