Cody Zeller: Hyped, Hailed, and Forgotten (Sporting News)

Pretty long, interesting read on our rookie.

Coming off the bench for the first time since his freshman year in high school, Zeller doesn’t yet have a clear playing style to fall back on.

He’s still too small to bang bodies down low and lacks sufficient range to be a stretch power forward. Clifford has said Zeller needs to get stronger, but Zeller insists it’s more about “playing stronger.”

Whatever ceiling he may have, Zeller has come in with the work ethic of a rookie with something to prove instead of a top-five pick with an outsized ego, according to teammates and Clifford.

“He’s gotta look at some of the guys that have come and gone in this league and see how they’ve lasted, and that’s because they’ve just done the little things,” the scout said. “Rebounded, defended, and made the open shots when the ball was kicked out to you.”

Just a snippet.  Talks to Zeller, Clifford, and an anonymous Western Conference scout.

I really wish we would've taken Nerlens Noel though

So draft another offensive project who is at best will be Marcus Camby in three years..but has a knee injury already suffered in thephysical college game. Hmmm he was my "Hell No!" draft pick.

On a team with Biyombo and MKG..to draft a third offensive project woulda just been awesome!! Vomit.

Alex Len was my hell no pick. Noel will be a good player. probably better than zeller.

    • If you need someone to run your multi-billion dollar business, maaayyyybe don't hire a guy whose previous work experience includes repeated blows to the head and literal brain damage but IDK.
    • Extrapolate that with every QB for that matter. I guarantee you there's quite a bit of missed opportunities and yards left on the field for everyone. Many NFL QBs deal with WRs not putting in A+ effort, subpar o-line play and other deficiencies. The great ones are able to rise above these issues and create opportunities for plays. Guys like Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes can both play in and out of structure, as well as find ways to get yards when things break down and mask mistakes by throwing guys open, creating opportunities from nothing, etc. Bryce Young has only shown he's able to make things happen when the rest of the team picks up his slack. Very rarely does he create those opportunities himself. When this is a consistent pattern year after year with Bryce where he shows up lackluster, it's a concern. This is year three and he should be elevating the team as a first overall pick this franchise traded up for.  He was far from elevating anyone against JAX. In fact, he needed others to elevate and create for him. Excuses may be fine for a rookie, but this is year three for the first overall pick. Not looking good so far.
    • I think the worst issue is coaching. Countless bad snaps, XL not getting his feet in or trying on runs plays, our centre being down field when he didn't need to be. All seem to be from poor coaching for me. I believe Canales is to soft to rip the players a new one when the fug up. Plus I honestly believe that Canales is slow getting his plays in giving Bryce less time to diagnose and adjust to the defence. Don't worry I could of head butted Bryce for that fumble and the 4th down throw aways but the other plays are explainable to me
