Carolina Panthers Rookie Camp Pictures

May 11 2013 01:54 PM Zod Carolina Panthers
Rookie camp is basically an introduction for the rookies and undrafted free agents of note and a chance for scores of other players to try to get an invite to the regular camp.

In all honesty there is not much going on except the extreme fundamentals of the game. They break down the rookies with the basics and keep an eye out for others that show them something.

There is no real contact allowed, so we can only watch and notice the footwork and strength of the lineman in dummy drills and such.

So anyways on with some pics and general observations....

1- Gettleman is awesome. He has a much different personality than Hurney. Very outgoing. Just seems like a great guy. He reminds me of a highschool football coach from his demeanor to how he wears his shorts. He also chews tobacco, not redman, its out of a tin. A Copenhagen man.

Here David Gettleman takes time to sign an autograph.

2. A couple guys you may not have heard on but possibly keep an eye on....

Tori Mobley - Guard from Jacksonville State - 6'3 290. Undrafted Free Agent
Posted Image

Casey Walker - Defensive Tackle from Oklahoma. 6-1 335. This guy is HUGE.

3. Star Lotulelei is as advertised. He instantly makes you aware of what has been missing. He just has a presence about him. I was watching him in drills. Nimble feet, tons of power, and it all just seems to come to him naturally and effortlessly.

4. Kawaan Short - Looked fine in drills. The biggest thing was he was not corrected on anything. This was a day you really did not want your name called.

5. Matt McGloin our new QB prospect. He actually looked pretty sharp. The receivers were extremely sub par, but he seemed to hit most of them in stride. Not a big guy and doesn't seem to have a huge arm, but is very fluid. Maybe our own Andy Dalton (ginger reference). Gettleman was keeping a close eye on him (pictured below)

6. Ron Rivera seemed to be in really good spirits. If he is a man with his job on the line you couldn't tell by looking at him.

7. AJ Klein - Good guy. Took the time to sign autographs on the way in. Again, didn't hear his name all day which was a good thing. Bigger than I thought he would be (twss).

Thank you for the pictures and update Zod - great stuff - Cant wait to see what is in store for the upcoming season - our new linebacker looks like hes already up to playing weight  - ready to see what he can bring to the team.

Thanks Zod your work is much appreciated. This info is much better than anything else i found on the web.

I know he wore the same one in college but that is a pretty interesting face mask choice/preference for Star. Looks more like something a skill position player would wear but he must like the visibility it provides. I'd love to see him throw a visor on so he doesn't get any fingers to the face during the season and he would look even more like a monster.

Yea I don't think Lester is some phenomenal player like some people are making him out to be. He looked really, really bad in some games. Some of it, I think is coachable. He takes bad angles and like Promethean said isn't great in man coverage. He is a ball hawk, seems to be a play-maker though. I hope he makes the team.

Just trust the dreads man

Dwan has a similar facemask, it's not that big of a deal.
I wanted Star to get that Ray Lewis facemask and visor. Only then would he have become Death Star.
Hey Zod was brandon Williams and if he was how did he look on the field? Rivera said its been a bit "overwhelming" for him but considering his situation that's not surprising. Just want to know if you noticed him at all. (And thanks for all your work)

Just an observation that is all.

He said no one stood out to him, but then again coaches were likely analyzing other things that us fans don't notice. Only Rivera and Gettleman truly know how they feel about him at this point.

Yeah. That is certainly true but sometimes the naked eye doesn't lie. I was critical of Nortman last off season and said NicK Harris looked better. We went with Nortman and it cost us a game.

All I can say about the punters and kickers was we were dodging balls all day from them getting sliced or hooked into our area.

that's no good news.  Do we have anyone in camp who can kick a ball straight?

Haters gonna hate...

Better they get it out of their system now, I'm really hoping for an improved special teams this year.

Funny you say this, because this is a text I got from my buddy the day we got Gettleman...

The Curse of succeeding Kasey?

Heh I was going to say something similar. If Lester and Godfrey are starting we have the league's longest haired Safeties heh. "With our hair powers combined, we are TROY POLOMALU!"

... hopefully doesn't take you guys too long to get that reference...

Captain Planet. Classic. Pie for that one
Thanks for the pics and some insight from rookie camp

He was a high school coach many moons ago.  That's how he started out, if I recall correctly.

Wish he'd remove the tarps from the practice field fences.

*Looking at 17* Who the hell let Delhomme on to the field?
