He’s a great example of building a good team around a limited QB. Something we can definitely do.

Championship Round Playoff Thread

I'm sure its been said but the Vikings have to feel worse. Darnold played great for them, and they let him walk for JJ McCarthy. -
For everyone saying "Oh, he wouldn't have ever been that here." Is that supposed to be a justification for letting him get away? No, it's an indictment on...well ownership. It doesn't make me feel any better, it just makes me reflective about development timelines, patience, team building and the like. And, for those saying that he is the same QB, well... that's laughable. He's obviously well-coached, confident and experienced. He's led two teams to consecutive 14-win seasons and is in the Super Bowl (and will probably become a champion). Coping doesn't have a home here. The Panthers fvcked up in so many ways.

I don’t really much watch the Super Bowl anymore. Especially when the same team is always in it. Sometimes. But for all those reasons that tie in with that generally obscenely overproduced halftime show, I care less and less. We have had some good contests. But with all that stuff and Taylor Swift and the whole thing I barely paid attention to it last year. So often it is about the commercials and the halftime show and the game is just meh. The conference championship weekend, generally, is where the real Super Bowl is played. At least as often as not. I think that the Rams Seattle game had the two best teams in it.

My uneducated eye saw him as close after Wilks got him back in. Wilks was very protective of him I thought, didn’t rush him and didn’t ask too much from him at first. I thought he let him get his feet under him. I will bet you Reich could really have helped him. Instead of making that trade and putting Sam out, we should have stayed with him with a real NFL coach. Reich was a good QB coach. You can call his offenses bland but he knew QBs. I have been so angry with the team.. mainly Tepper I guess, for forcing this unnecessary hardship on us.

And timing is everything. You don't build the roof of a house before you build the foundation. Teams that draft #1 overall tend to go for QBs and put them in impossible situations. Our coach sucked. Our OL sucked (even when Cam was here, but he could overshadow that deficiency), etc. They seem to have the idea down (Morgan?) but when Bryce gets paid, you can't have $100m going to the OL and $50m to the QB and still have WRs and a Defense. We have to develop our talent and be prepared to let them walk and retool. I am still a bit upset by the Horn CB deal. Look at the salary we have locked up at OG and CB....Yikes. If it were not for MJackson and Coker, we would have been in deep poopie. I am still fairly optimistic, and I have accepted the fact that Bryce will be our CB for at least another season. He is improving, but I do not like the fact that he needs so much investment in the OL and WRs to be average--before his mega deal. I am hoping we draft an QB with potential to develop on day 3 and see what we can do with him. Long shot, but some of the top names in 2024 are going to be taken late this draft. Like Purdy (I wanted him around round 5 or 6), or Ewers from last season. I like several QBs who may not even be drafted, like the kid from Vanderbilt. I also like Mateer from Oklahoma. Raw, but a year on the bench could help.

Top 5 draft targets for positions of need
LinvilleGorge replied to raleigh-panther's topic in Carolina Panthers
We've still fuged up in the past going "BPA". We drafted Butler at DT and Shaq at LB when DT and LB were some of our biggest strengths of the roster. Butler was a flat out bust and Shaq was basically a JAG starter at LB. I know that triggers some folks, but sorry that's just the truth. We overdrafted him then doubled down on that and overpaid him. -
We had two shots at #1. Hell, we had them on the roster at the same time. Darnold and Mayfield both.
-
You either 1- Get the right HC/System & QB combination 2- Get the top-tier HC 3 - Get the top-tier QB (All scenarios require a legit defense) We could've had option 1 or 2 with Darnold but Rhule was simply the wrong hire. Everything comes back to that. Everything since that disaster has been overcorrections or correcting those over-corrections. We're finally at a point where things have been reset enough to feel mostly past it, but it is hard to see the ramifications and what-ifs. Oof.

Oh, Bryce is ass too. Don't get me wrong. A lot of people are allowing our better than expected record and the good fortune of playing in a trash division delude them. And even with all of that, we still had to rely on the Bucs shitting the bed down the stretch. - Today

This is not me coming at you so please dont take it that way. But I find it funny that Smith had a terrible season and in fact he absolutely did but his stats are comparable if not better than bryces. Its funny how bryce defenders are judging him -
I meant O'Connell not MacDonald.

The NFL absolutely has preferred outcomes. Playoff viewership can swing pretty dramatically. But honestly, the Super Bowl is an entity of it's own. Doesn't matter who is there viewership is going to be massive. It's the biggest television event of the year and is way bigger than the game of football. It's a complete media spectacle and the football game itself has honestly almost become a background for it. The diehard football fans are tuning in for the game, but the spectacle itself is what draws the massive viewership and there's a lot of people watching that don't know their ass from their elbow when it comes to football. It's why I don't understand all the uproar from football fans about halftime acts. Guys, the halftime show isn't for you. They know that. They're not catering to you with it. You're watching anyway. The halftime act is to try to maximize the non-football audience. Let them enjoy it. Halftime for you is a break to grab some beers and wings. I can honestly only remember actually tuning in for one halftime show and that was the Dre/Snoop/Eminem year.

Sure there is. Because QBs like Geno are starting. You don't solve your problem by signing a problem. Young guys with potential upside are one thing. 35 year old journeymen coming off of a terrible season while still acting like an entitled ass are the ones you absolutely need to avoid. -

I actually have confidence that having Brady in the building will slowly fix them. I think when he gets tired of broadcasting (which probably won’t be long) he will be heavily invested in the organizations day to day. -
Sam made his turnaround here when we started running the ball and letting him use the Play Action at the end of the 2022 season. I think spending time with Shannahan and O’Connell helped him dial that in.

I hope the Raiders doesn't tank Mendoza's career. The dude has serious promise, but he can only do so much for as a dumpster fire organization with their massive limitations. -
It might just be me, but I am detecting a sliver of sarcasm here.

There is a huge deficit on teams needing QBs vs starting caliber QBs available in the draft/FA. I think he could get a shot somewhere desperate like NYJ or Cleveland -
There were a handful of QBs and we had our choice of them if we had not panicked and gave up so much for the worst pick out of the bunch.
-
I just came across this. I'm telling y'all Dallas has an monster boner for this guy. NO WAY he lasts until #19. It's silly to keep mocking him to the Panthers unless you have a trade ahead of the Cowgirls.

Seems like he’s going back to his natural persona which got him a broken jaw with the Jets. Yeah, I don’t think he’ll want to come here as a backup anyway -

Geno is trash. -
Darnold was never going to be the player he is now with Matt Rhule or Steve Wilks. But as has been stated repeatedly he always had all necessary physical tools to be a top 10 QB. Anyways between the two current teams in the Super Bowl the bigger whiff is not just waiting another year and drafting Drake Maye without giving up a ransom. We are in the position we are in because our owner was both impatient and desperate to win something in the eyes of the media. He made a big splash. The biggest he had yet. And it's been our biggest regret probably in franchise history. Now finally he is exercising patience but with the wrong guy. And there is a possibility we back our way into QB purgatory and sign him to a contract extension. Ultimately it all goes back to Tepper.
