It wasn’t the secondary so much as it was the linebackers. Bryce’s best games came against teams with bad/injured linebacking corps. The falcons were starting people off the street in Atlanta. i don’t know the name of the linebacker Bryce juked into the negative zone during the playoff game but i don’t think he deserves a name, tbh that was pathetic Now I wish I could explain to you the moves the rams made to address these issues but their draft especially is beyond the understanding of a simple fan like myself. Maybe the missing piece really was a qb who was benched during his final year at Alabama.

Where panthers draft ranked against Big Boards in 2023
strato replied to electro's horse's topic in Carolina Panthers
I’ll give him points for his playoff outing. At least he showed up and did some good things in a pressure situation. If he could play to that level every week my opinion of him would be a whole lot better, I’ll say that. Big if though. It sure earned him a ton of points with lot of people to the point that is all they need. Crown him. To them it is a given that he will fix his regular season yo yo pattern. Maybe they are still excusing him because we don’t have 10 pro bowl players around him. Yet. And yes, look at what the Rams did about their secondary when FA started. Reminds me of the Carolina Reaper stuff where the coaches get fired for losing to him. -

I was watching a YouTube and it was said that scout and GM insider types were saying the NIL had killed rounds 4-7. I don’t know that I buy it, seems like it might for a year or maybe two but then those guys have to move on. NCAA is apparently about to give 5 years of eligibility. It is gonna skew those entrants older maybe. -
Panthers attempted to trade up with Ravens?

Miller being less raw and more pro ready makes sense of why they picked him. With us having a capable starter in Walker the lower floor higher ceiling player makes sense for us as well. I agree with that. -

I'm from Michigan and have had this discussion with my Lions friends, and they all agree with me, they were never going to take Freeling over Miller. As, yes, you are correct, they could have left Sewell at RT and taken Freeling, but they are in a SB contention window right now. An OL with Freeling at LT and Sewell at RT is not as strong as Sewell at LT and Miller at RT would be for this upcoming season and likely at least next year as well. 5 years it could be looked back upon as a long term "mistake" to take Miller over Freeling, but for a franchise like the Lions, you can't worry about the long term when you have current SB aspirations. It's all about maximizing their current SB window over the next 1-3 years. And it's not about style, it's about day 1 readiness, and a lot of "experts" aren't even sure if Freeling is ready to play Week 1 yet at the position he's used to, let alone switching to a side he hasn't played before, but a career starting RT is going to be more than ready to fill that role for them Week 1. I'm 100% convinced that if our draft positioning was swapped, we'd have still taken Freeling, they'd have still taken Miller, and both teams would have got the OT that they preferred due to what each team needs right now and what their current realistic aspirations are for the 2026 season. We're in a position where we can let our drafted OT sit and learn for a bit, they needed a week 1 starter, for me that's where this discussion becomes very easy to understand why each team took the player they did. -
He was also apparently.

I can agree with that. The likelihood of an actual legit weekly presence is low, but there's promise in Coker. He may be a Norwellian type gem to a degree, but Philly was JAG. Like you, I keep my expectations for anything beyond the 4th round, maybe 5th, pretty low. - Today

I agree. What I'm saying is that Canales doesn't really seem to value using TEs at a level where a legit star is necessary anyway , unlike some coaches, and that his seeming refusal to appreciate and adapt to arguably a more efficient and modern offense may be a contributing factor to him getting canned. Drafting Sadiq was never a real thing in my mind (and that's why l never really spoke on it (if at all), because a move-TE doesn't seem necessary in the regular flow of the game to Canales.

Where panthers draft ranked against Big Boards in 2023
mrcompletely11 replied to electro's horse's topic in Carolina Panthers
This is my problem that I tried to point out above. Bryces good game was: 21-40 260 yards 1 td 1 int 50% completion in the playoffs at home This is what folks are saying a good game is. Well I guess for him that is which is just not nearly good enough -

Problem is he had two good games against the Rams and people forget that the secondary was absolutely terrible hence all the offseason signings at DB. We have a 1st place schedule so we’ll find out. I would be very disappointed in an extension as a good OL and WR crew (if Brazzell works out) is going to be underperforming with Young. -
Monroe Freeling’s lovely GF

I dig it. Got him a looker and she was raised right. Win/Win. -
Was just coming in to post the snippet below from the site. I don’t care what draft site it is, our 2023 draft, considering what we gave up, is absolutely the worst draft we or any other franchise has ever had. We gave away Jalen Carter, Caleb Williams or Drake Maye, DJ Moore and a few other 2nd rounders for poo and a small QB leading a bottom tier passing offense. The Panthers take our top spot for the second time. We ranked them No. 1 in 2023 when they took Bryce Young first overall. This time around, they picked No. 19.

TD was the exception that proves the rule.

Round 1: The Carolina Panthers select OT Monroe Freeling (Georgia)
WhoKnows replied to rodeo's topic in Carolina Panthers
No worries. I liked our draft but hearing someone say he looked bad in the combine drills and this play on X makes me concerned. I watched Little’s combine drills because Marty was supposedly in love and we needed OL and he looked like the Freeling video on every drill. He looked like the worst OL out there so hearing someone say Freeling’s combine drills were bad is a punch in the gut. Let’s hope it was a bad play and Freeling’s athleticism can get rid of the raw. Little’s RAS score was terrible as well. He completely poo the entire combine. Effin Hurney was so bad at scouting. I don’t care how many 1st rounders he hit. Picking top 10 isn’t hard. -
Panthers attempted to trade up with Ravens?
ForJimmy replied to TheSpecialJuan's topic in Carolina Panthers
His point is the Lions could have a hole at either RT or LT with Sewell being able to play both at a high level. They could have easily kept Sewell at RT where he has been playing at an elite level and draft Freeling to be their LT. It almost makes more sense. I also think painting these players into traditional LT or RT roles by their style is a little outdated. With the way defenses are moving their DL and pass rushers around the RT needs to be just as quick at the LT anymore. OG play is even considered more valuable now that it was in the past. -

Point being what? It doesn't matter why they have the hole at RT, it just matters that they have it and because they have it, they were always taking Miller over Freeling. Just like if we were ahead of them and both were on the board, we'd have also taken Freeling, and if Freeling was gone, I don't think we take Miller at all. Taking a career RT would have made zero sense for us -
And we saw that with Luke and Cam and Jake. TD spoiled us into believing anyone could come back if they wanted it enough. TD was the exception more than the rule, though.
