Opinions: will T.Lawrence be a bust?
DaveThePanther2008 replied to Jmac's topic in Carolina Panthers
This got me thinking. Has that ever happened before? I can't recall EVER a team having back to back #1 picks. -
I assume these are the rest after Mahomes? If so, he nailed the top 3. probably Mayfield, Darnold, Rudolph and Rosen in that order after. I wonder what his take is on who's the best in this class. I hope Rhule listens to him.

I think he lost the locker room last year. If he loses it again. He's done. That said if he shows he's learned from his mistakes and the team fights and plays well. I don't have a problem with. My biggest concern is the loyalty to Baylor and Temple players and coaches. Some of these guys wouldn't be in the NFL if it weren't for Rhule.

Excelling at a HBCU school does not mean you are the best at your craft. You're going up against players that aren't the same caliber as players in the SEC (his previous conference) The NFL is made up of the best of the best. (even though some look terrible to us) As a scouting department you have to pick and choose were you want to be. One player at a pro-day that may not be in the window he's going to be selected. When you have a pro day with 3 or 4 guys giving a workout. You go with the 3 or 4 guy Pro Day. I know that Deion recruited him to come out of Florida but maybe that was because he wasn't having as much success. His tape looks good but we saw what happened to David Moore. He looked amazing on tape but when he got among talented players he just didn't pan out. I don't know about James Houston IV and have no idea whether he'll be a star or JAG or a flameout in camp. I believe the Panthers decided it wasn't worth their time for a mid-round player. Plus as @MHS831 said. If we're interested we can have him in for a private workout.

Howell will be gone before the end of the 2nd round. Wouldn't be surprised if he is a late 1st.

Sure, sure we'll give you a first for your backup QB. The one that was your starter but you don't believe in him anymore and traded a kings ransom for a troublesome QB. A QB that may or may not play out his entire contract due to legal issues. Sure, no problem. We'll give you a backup and throw in a receiver for him plus a pick. Didn't think so.

He's extremely controversial and when he opens his mouth people still listen, even in disbelief. Sometimes guys like this make people tune in even if he is wrong. I think bringing Todd McShay to counter him makes keeping him on the staff that much more interesting. He smart and knows a lot about these players and makes some good points. His Mocks are terrible an usually he only gets the first pick right. I wish I had his gig. Work 30 years and be wrong most of the time and still get PAID.

Could also be a smoke screen to get someone like Carolina to take Willis instead of Pickett. These GMs are all sneaky folks. That said, I am sure they are interested to see how well he performs but showing up doesn't mean they are after him 100%
-
True, I am not saying that he won't be productive or even a franchise QB. You just have more homework to do to make him your future QB. I didn't watch the whole clip but some of those throws were perfectly placed and a few on the run. Hoever, the point @The Huddler makes about missing 1st reads can't be underestimated. If he's a one read and run QB we might as well sign Kaepernick.

The talent level he played against worries me some but I also saw some throws that he made that he would have to make in the NFL. It will be interesting to hear what Fitterer has to say about Willis after the Pro Day.

So you're telling me your not applying for Mel Kiper's job. LOL Than again you probably could do better than Mel Kiper. I just have this gut feeling whoever takes Howell is going to have a good QB. Last year at Carolina he had zero help (as compared to 2020). It's hard to replace 4 NFL caliber players (2 WR and 2 RB) in one season. After 2020 many had him as the top prospect going into 2021. I'll be interested to see how much his stock rises, if at all, at his Pro Day on 28 March. I got this off the Carolina page. Howell working out for his Pro Day. I think bring back Cam as a backup to whoever starts for us is a good idea. I'd just like to see him from the start of Mini-camps through Training Camp with a competent offense line. Which I think we have now.
-
Kind of reminds me about all the "not athletic enough" conversations we had last year about Mac Jones last year. I'm still a Howell fan and think he is being highly underrated but I guess we'll see come the start of the season.

We have plenty of talent on both sides of the ball. It would be too obvious if we were tanking in 2022. I hate seeing that because many of these guys only have a 3 or 4 year career window and they didn't work as hard as they did to go to a team that is tanking intentionally.
-
Been a wild couple of hours that's for sure.
-
You and I have always seen pretty much eye to eye and you're much more in tune to college players than I am. What's your take on Pickett?
-
The options are getting thinner by the minute for a FA or trade. Mayfield or Minshew are about the only ones I would be open to trading for.
-
All this movement and we're doing nothing makes me feel like we are drafting a QB. Whether we're trading down or taking one at #6.
-
That would suck for Mayfield. Seattle is going to be in total rebuild and probably have a terrible year and be on the market in 2023 without much to show for a starting gig. I'm torn between yes and no. He had all the talent in the world around him in Cleveland and just could keep it going after 2020. His injuries don't help him much either. With us he'd be in the same boat as Darnold. Show or go.

PFF's Sam Monson on Panthers free agency
DaveThePanther2008 replied to TheSpecialJuan's topic in Carolina Panthers
Look, as it stands Darnold will be the #1 QB going into training camp. If he wins the starting QB over a rookie or a FA. He's going to have to perform. I've said in many threads that you cannot put all of his problems on him. Our line was atrocious and that's being kind. I think we'll have a much better line and there shouldn't be any more excuses. I hope somewhere we get our Franchise QB but even if we do I'm hoping Darnold does well. If he plays well in 2022 and we don't resign him we should be in a position for a compensation pick later on. -
Lloyd is a beast. I've seen a couple of game of his and he was awesome. I would not be against this pick.

Panthers Free Agency Re-Cap and grading
DaveThePanther2008 replied to Zod's topic in Carolina Panthers
The only thing about this I don't like are all the one year deals. Seems they always play well and we end up losing them. Overall, I agree B should be the grade. Depending on the draft it could go to an A.
