The Big Four?!?!

Recommended Posts

You cant go over the soft cap to sign free agents, thats like the only thing the soft cap does. Well that and gives you a smaller mid-level and makes trades more difficult. There is no way a hard cap would have stopped them from signing with Miami back in 2010 and theres no way it would stop this potential Melo signing.

In fact, the soft cap helps teams that build through the draft and make savvy trades by letting them keep players already on the team. Without the soft cap teams like the Thunder and Spurs would have a much harder time keeping their teams together (not that the Thunder care b/c their owner is cheap, but still)

There are tons of excepts to that.

I.E re-signing your own free agents (bird rights).

And I'm pretty sure you can go over the cap to sign free agents because that's exactly what Brooklyn did last year.

But if you have bird rights on a player, that player still counts against the cap.

Lets say Lebron and Wade opt out of their contracts this summer- Miami doesnt just get a bunch of cap space right away.  Their bird rights still count against the cap (around the amount they were paid the previous season), so they cant go out and sign Melo then resign their own guys using bird rights.

The only way you can really get away with it is if you have a player just coming off his rookie deal who is about to get a big extension, then his bird rights number might be $10 million less than he will get on his next contract.

The only way you can sign free agents when you are over the cap is to use the mid-level exception, which is around $5 million or so (which I think gets cut in half if you are over the luxury tax).  Brooklyn didnt sign any big free agents last summer, they just traded for them or did a sign-and-trades for them.  Which is why Brooklyn is missing like 5 1st round picks over the next decade

The NBA seems to sit back and enjoy this kind of stuff. I feel like they were really pleased when those guys went to Miami. They seem to love the PR whether it's good or bad. It's probably because the NBA fan is so different these days. These kids are loyal to players instead of teams that represent cities.

Bosh says it's not gonna happen.

But Chris Bosh on Thursday denied an ESPN report that the team’s top players have already started to explore ways to create enough salary cap space to pull this off. In fact, Bosh said he, LeBron James and Dwyane Wade have never once discussed the scenario of adding Anthony to the mix or how it can be accomplished. (It would require monumental pay cuts by all four.) “I think that’s very, very unlikely,” Bosh said of such a Big Four scenario, with Anthony as the fourth

With the way Miami played the last two games, it won't happen. Bosh is invisible and Wade is a flopping, injured crybaby. Lebron has two rings already. Pretty sure hes done having fun in the sun. He's def not going to stay down there with Wade and Bosh.

I think you are correct.

Wade is washed up....and Bosh has become a one trick pony sitting on the 3 point arc.

I see him either forcing Wade out and getting another star in Miami, or moving on.......he needs it because he cannot win the title with him and a group of good role players.  He needs other stars on the team.

If Miami is able to sign another big name player while keeping the big three then I have a feeling the league will have major problems. The fans, owners, players and coaches will all be pissed and not to mention you will end up having all the good players trying to go on one team making only a handful of teams that could compete and the rest will be bad teams. This cannot be allowed to happen.

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
