Patriots Considering Lining up Brandon LaFell as TE in Hernandez Role

The Patriots don’t seem to have much at tight end behind Rob Gronkowski — Michael Hoomanawanui and undrafted rookies Justin Jones and Asa Watson — but watch out for LaFell playing the “Hernandez” role. “He played all of our wide receiver positions, plus he knew the tight end position,” his former coach, Ron Rivera, told me in March. LaFell was also a “want-to” blocker in Carolina, meaning he doesn’t mind getting physical in the run game. Patriots fans, meet your new Swiss Army Knife.

LEAVES FRIENDS AND TEAM THAT DRAFTED HIM AND GAVE HIM TONS OF OPPORTUNITIES TO BE A NUMBER ONE RECEIVER BECAUSE THE MONEY WASN'T RIGHT.

JOINS TEAM WITH WINDOW CLOSING TO BE A 4TH RECEIVER/THIRD STRING TIGHT END.

Gettleman wasn't giving a 600 yard and 3-4 TD receiver a $9M contract with $3M guaranteed.  And that's what LaFell is.  He made a nice jump from his rookie to sophomore seasons, but he's had 3 consecutive years of those types of numbers.  That likely wasn't going to change in our system as he was given significant opportunity to do more.  When Smitty was out, the guy completely disappeared.

What kind of Swiss Army Knife can't carry it's primary responsibility? ie: catching the ball

Let's be honest. Swiss army knives could do many things, but none of them well. Maybe, maybe, I'll give the bottle opener props.

Lafell did Hernandez type things for us too. He would run the ball a couple times a year. Not very fast but pretty good at running guys over.

    • Basically agree.  He is the one of that bunch that offers upgraded pass catching along with he is supposed to be kind of special.   Then you have the OL and the ideas that if they perform you can have JAG backs and still do well. So okay we could be fine.  But Brooks is important and to me that receiving element sets him apart.  So there sure is something riding on him.     What strikes me as incongruent is people over in Atlanta or those that follow them look at Penix with a third surgery and act like it is no big deal.      And we are on pins and needles over Brooks.  Either they should worry a lot more or we should worry a lot less.
    • I usually go a game or two optimist over the consensus here but this is too early for me to say. I need to see some players on the field.  I am not feeling real optimistic though.
    • Okay as a ‘take CJ’ fan I actually don’t obsess over CJ and Houston, contrary to the narrative.  But I thought I picked up some noise that his OL left a lot to be desired.    Not a single Beyce supporter would judge him harshly if he had a crappy OL. We all know that.    So be fair about it.  A QB needs to be protected.  Especially a guy that gets to his spot and wants to finish the play from there. Which CJ is.
