Speed & Quickness at WR

Alright...so I think something lost in the shuffle about us not having the best wideout group is not necessarily the overall lack of talent or solid vets but speedsters.  I'm not saying it should be a huge concern because that does not fully make a WR, but most teams typically have that home run threat type guy.  Everyone can't expect a Torrey Smith/Cruz/Cobb but it's nice to have at least that threat on the field in certain situations.

Looking at our roster, we pretty much have Underwood, Phily Brown and Tavares King as our speed guys.  Avant seems more of that elusive/finesse type with great hands.  Cotchery and Benjamin are RZ threats who will already be seeing the field a lot.

It no doubt seems we're running a more methodical/ball-control offense...but still, we had Ginn last season and some of his play helped win us games (see: NE).

That's why I'm VERY interested in seeing Tiquan, King and Brown this offseason/preseason.  I'm not saying they are going to be in a Ginn type role, but looking at our roster...our #3 & #4 receivers will be much closer in numbers compared to last season imo where we had:

Ginn (36 rec, 556 yds)

Hixon (7 rec, 55 yds)

It's amazing looking at last season...our RB/FBs had 62 receptions and our WR4 and TE2 combined had 8.  I think it's going to be a bit different this year looking at our offensive players.

I'm fine with the group we have. The media will continue to understimate them, but who cares, they should have a chip on their shoulders at this point. Honestly I'm more concerned about picking up where we left off in the return game, and obviously the OL gelling quickly.

I'm fine with it too.  The point of the thread was to highlight the battle for that Ginn-type role on offense.  I think many have been assuming KB/Jerricho/Avant are getting the bulk of catches but maybe Avant ends up being more of a minimal role a la Hixon and one of the 3 in the OP contributes more.

I don't know why I keep forgetting Underwood.  He looked as good as Ginn ever has last season (not looking at KR/PR)...and that was with Glennon throwing him the ball.  He definitely has the opportunity here to get some numbers and contribute quite nicely.

    • Yeah one big factor has been he is surprisingly quite durable. But the reality of that aspect is much of it boils down to plain dumb luck more often than not. Big guys get hurt smaller guys get hurt it happens across the league to anyone to varying degrees. The issue is we are staring down the barrel of a possible top 10 QB salary and Bryce Young is one of the least physically gifted starters in the league. That is not a shot at him it is simply a rational acknowledgment of circumstances. There is a legitimate question to be asked if his window as a starter in this league is smaller as a result because what is going to happen when those hits that he has previously popped right back up from with a smile on his face begin to accumulate as they do for every player that has been in this league? These are just things to consider.
    • This game is a must-win for both teams I feel. For the Canes, you don’t want to go back to Vegas and put them in front of their home crowd with a chance to close out the series. For Vegas, if you drop this game your only chance is to win 2 straight and similarly have to contend with an energized Canes home crowd if you get to a game 7.
