Byron Bell starting is a "fait accompli"

I know it is very early given we haven't even played any regular season games, but if Bell does better on the left side versus the right I want all the multiple posters who made tons of post laughing about how being left handed and playing left tackle in college wouldn't change anything to eat platefuls of crow.

I will. Here is my post from the J Stew thread.

I openly admit to wanting J Stew to prove my fat ass wrong. Same with Byron Bell. I would love nothing more than to have these two guys make me look like a damn ignorant fool.

We have all been wrong about players and coaches.  But if you are a Panther fan (and I know you are) I would think you would want everyone on the team to be fantastic and prove our doubts and concerns to be wrong.  I thought Benjamin would be too raw to contribute right away but I sure hope he proves me wrong on that this year.

Hell, I'll enjoy every last delicious bite of that crow! I still need to see him hold up for a few games that count before I fire up the grill though.

Rivera said via BBR

http://blackandbluereview.com/six-pack-aug-20/

'He's done some things on the left side that he didn't do on the right side that have been impressive." Rivera said. "But the biggest thing we keep forgetting is, he's a natural left-hander.

"His punch is a lot better, and his first step is a little bit better. Again that's because he's working of his left side. Having seen that, I have confidence that he can do the job for us."

This was the topic many months ago. Many thought it was just BS but apparently playing the left side for Bell is better than the right.

BECAUSE HE IS LEFT HANDED.

Funny how everyone put it off that being left handed was in no way shape or form going to help him improve, obviously they dont know football, olineman use there hands more than anyone on the field...makes plenty of sense

Add that most people don't know how hard it is for left handed people to do everything backwards.  Left handed people have more accidents than right handed folks just because the world is built for right handed people.  Being left handed myself, I have experienced how hard it is for us to do everything backwards from what is "normal".  I was one of those posters who speculated that being left-handed might be much easier for him compared to staying on the right side.

I played oline in college and played both left and right guard. Made no difference to me. The left handed thing may be overstated here, or maybe not, but at least he seems more comfortable

I'll have you know I played O-line on NCAA Football for about 3 minutes and you're wrong sparky.

Playing guard and tackle are two different positions, the edge is wide open for rushers meaning that a good first punch is vital to get them off track, not to mention the kick is vital to get in position to hold off blocks...prob easier for him to kick and slide with his left foot more so than right, and jus feeling more comfortable on the side that he is dominant could make all the difference... But a guards responsibilty is actually quite different than that of a tackle other than the actual techniques your, blocking a whole different type of player.

I've heard Rivera talk about how much he likes Bell's feet over the years. I don't quite understand it because he's always struggle with speed. But if you watch bell in practice you can see his footwork looks smooth. You don't need to be an NFL scout to recognize smooth footwork.

That was Rex Ryan who said that.

KB is going to eat this league alive right from the get go.

Since Ron has been here he has drafted the same type of player in the first round every year.  Here is the criteria:

1.) Freakishly large, strong and physically imposing.

2.) Exceptionally quick for that size.

3.) Good head on his shoulders.

4.) It's nice if it is a position of need.

Kelvin is an absolute giants AND jump ball specialist, not one or the other.  His biggest concerns out of college were speed, drops and inability to learn a playbook/work ethic.

He ain't droppin balls (and if you watch his college drops, they were all when he was wide open, that "issue" would have surfaced in camp).

His speed looks fine.  He's not blazing fast but plenty fast enough to play in the league.

If he didn't know the playbook, he wouldn't be starting.  This we know with Ron.  Add in all the time he spends with Cam and the reports of him putting in extra work... this guy is gonna be an animal.

I compared it to skateboarding. A goofy footed compared to regular footed. I could understand the comments.

    • You're correct. But PFF does indeed use advanced stats to come up with their grades. Not trying to turn this into a debate about PFF (at all because it's been done ad nauseum), but here is how PFF explain it:   GRADES VS. STATS We aren’t grading players based on the yardage they rack up or the stats they collect. Statistics can be indicative of performance but don’t tell the whole story and can often lie badly. Quarterbacks can throw the ball straight to defenders but if the ball is dropped, you won't see it on the stat sheet. Conversely, they can dump the ball off on a sequence of screen passes and end up with a gaudy looking stat line if those skill position players do enough work after the catch. PFF grades the play, not its result, so the quarterback that throws the ball to defenders will be downgraded whether the defender catches the ball to notch the interception on the stat sheet or not. No amount of broken tackles and yards after the catch from a bubble screen will earn a quarterback a better grade, even though his passing stats may be getting padded. The same is true for most positions. Statistics can be misleading. A tackle whose quarterback gets the ball out of his hands quicker than anybody else may not give up many sacks, but he can still be beaten often and earn a poor grade. Receivers that are targeted relentlessly could post big-time numbers but may offer little more than the product of a volume-based aerial attack.   So PFF uses stats to come up with player grades and rankings.
