Big Money restructures

Captain Morgan

Recommended Posts

If they are restructuring to get cash from the future then they are likely going to use it now....not in the future. At least that makes more sense to me. It might be for a trade but maybe for signing Cam to an extension. When extensions are done they take place at the time they are done. They do not wait for the original to expire.

You're an idiot.

I hope you're talking to yourself.

Yes, that is the first thread from last night. The OP has a link to the original article that broke this news. At the very top of said article...

Go blow Person somewhere else. But I'm sure it's easy not to understand I'm bitching about two threads on the same topic.

Can't we role money over to the next year?  If that's the case it gives us more money to add to the signing bonus next year for Cam and can overall reduce his cap numbers on later years.   Count 13 mill for hardy + 8.5 for Smitty thats 21.5 mill alone.  Cam is already scheduled to get 14.5 next year with the 5th year option.  We can take a bigger hit next year but reduce his cap number to around 16-18 mill which would be awesome. Still leave us with great flexibility for Luke and others.   It works out well I think.

We can roll money over. But why take money from next year to free space now to roll over to next year? There might be a reason but it seems odd.

I thought the signing bonus is pro rated over the course of the contract.  Thus giving us another year to prorate by doing it earlier?  Pffft.. who am I kidding, I have no idea how all this stuff works.

im so glad Big Money did this. shows he cares about the financial health of the team. just looked at the details on rotoworld and spotrac and it seems as though this doesnt handicap the Panthers and still gets Johnson all of his contract. very happy to hear this news.

weird actually having a GM..........doing his job

OH FUG NO. FIRE GETTLE... oh wait...

Not necessarily....depends on how the contract extension is written.

It can replace the current contract...thus starting immediately.

Or, it can be written to begin next year (after the 5th year option).

I have seen them both ways.

any idea what Cam's contract would look like if we replace his 5th year with the extension? as in... would it be less than the 5th year option or no?

"So I reformatted my flux capacitor..."

i have some extra plutonium if you are short. it'll cost you though

I don't claim to really understand salary cap stuff, but here goes: I think you can rollover unused salary cap space from one season to the next. So that would mean we now get an extra $5.2 million over the standard cap to spend next year on Cam's contract.

You are correct in that it could rollover.  But CJ's contract goes up by that same amount over the next 2 years.  This was a move made to save cap space this year.

Cam is under contract next season for around $14mil (5th year option). When he gets an extension it will start in 2016, not next year.

As someone else alluded to I think it can happen both ways.  We can replace current contract or extend starting in 2016.  Even if we extend in 2016 a signing bonus can start now.  Look at JJ Watt contract.

I do have a basic understanding of this.  Without getting super complicated it goes like this.  He gets salary and bonus/guaranteed money.  Salary money only happens if he is on the roster.  Bonus/guaranteed happens no matter what.  They converted some of next years money into guaranteed money spread out over the remainder of his contract.  That drops CJ's cap # down next year.

CJ's cap is going up in each of the next 2 years.  His cap number will be around 20m in 2015.

I don't know if this is money for Cam or just to free up some space but it's absolutely not for Hardy.

This is his last year as a Panther.  Bill Voth already stated it.

Even if we resigned Hardy he is already on the books for 13m for this year so we really don't need extra cap space to work in a multi year contract this year. (Next year is a different story)

When you see numbers for our cap space for 2015 they don't include Hardy, he is off the books.  So you really can't say losing him will free up 13m.  If he was included at 13m we would be over the cap.  Also we aren't saving quite that much for Smith.

We can roll money over. But why take money from next year to free space now to roll over to next year? There might be a reason but it seems odd.

Exactly.

This move was made to free up space for this year.  There are only 2 logical reasons to do this.

1)  We could sign a free agent player that would command more cap space then what we have currently available.  For example if we want to sign a tackle that wants 6m a year.

2)  We are giving an extension for one of our players and we need the space to absorb a larger cap hit.  This is especially true if the player receives a substantial signing bonus.  A 25m dollar singing bonus would work out to about 5m in cap space needed this year.

Number one doesn't seem like DG's style.

The Panthers now have 7,374,486 in cap space that can roll over into next year.  That figure does not include the CJ situation.  Also, all of these players contracts are off the books next year. That allows some flexibility.

Jon Beason=8m James Anderson=2.8m Jordan Gross=1.725m Hangartner=666,668 Nakamura=365,833 Joe Adams-233,776
