Have any of you ever seen Gettleman so shaken up during an interview with the media?

Everything about him seemed to be off.  I know he generally won't even talk with the media during the regular season, regardless of the circumstances.  This is a man who has does everything in his power to clear up our cap mess and turn us into a serious contender within two seasons.  This is a man who didn't hesitate to cut the best player in franchise history.  This is a man with a ball sack larger than Montana.  I have absolutely no idea how to react to the way he handled this conference.

 

This is our GM.  All players and coaches are denying that this situation is a distraction.  That is fine and dandy, but if it is distracting our GM it is a huge issue.  D.G.'s opinion of potential acquisitions were held in high regard to the Giants organization, but his team scouting game plans were held in equal (or higher) regard.  He is (arguably) the most important man behind the team that is fielded, we need him at full focus and capacity to win games this year and moving forward.

 

Without a doubt, the man is facing some form of difficult dilemma with this situation.  I just hope he does what he always has and manages to find the best method to get past it.

 

P.S. I think DG smokes a lot during stressful times.

Some people just aren't great at crisis management. It doesn't help that I'm pretty sure that Jerry is such an NFL defender that he probably let them decide what to do, and the NFL just didn't have their poo together on this one.

This really shouldn't be a normal part of Gettleman's job, so I'm not worried about how he handled it.

What I saw in that video was a man who was truly concerned about Hardy and how he feels rather than the 13.1 million in lost cap space. I think it speaks volumes about the kind of organization we are. I love how Rivera and DG have handled the situation. 

 

That being said, I don't believe this has really distracted DG from doing his job. I don't think it'll be a distraction beyond this point. It is pretty much over now until November. I think we'll be just fine.

Gettleman was a member of the Giants organization when Sept. 11 happened. He's dealt with things far worse than this. He'll be fine.

 

Game planning is not his responsibility. That's done by Shula and McDermott. That's their job to do, and they get paid well to do it. Gettleman's not going to turn them away if they come asking about players on other teams or if he's seen offensive or defensive trends as he's watching film to evaluate players. But game planning is not his job. And Rivera has the final say in what the game plan will be, not Gettleman.

 

I'm glad to see he had a hard time at the podium. That means it hurt him. And it would only hurt if he cared about both Hardy and the team. If it was just Hardy he cared about, he'd be his agent. If he just cared about the team, he'd have been calm and look relieved at the podium that this was over. But he looked wounded that he had to this, and that shows he cares. Caring earns respect, and because he cares about the team and it's players like that, I'm sure the players respect him even more. I know I do.

In fairness to Gettleman and the organization, in July, this was the furthest thing from a crisis and would remain that way now if not for the Ray Rice elevator tape.

 

I believe the Panthers WERE doing what they felt was right and were suddenly forced into doing something they did not want to do and what they know now is truly a no-win situation. Going into every press conference knowing that whatever you say or do will ultimately be futile in getting the public pressure off your back has to be exasperating.

 

They are criticized for being ignorant and clueless only because they are trying to follow the league's policies, and with the league nowhere to be found, the Panthers, Ravens, Vikings and now Cardinals are having to make things up on the fly with front offices ill-equipped to hand out discipline since that has always been the league's job.

 

I believe a Goodell resignation and interim appointment of Tagliabue would give the NFL the stability it needs at a time like this, but there's too many egos involved for anything to happen and thus, we haven't heard from the league in awhile while the franchises are left to get their names unfairly dragged through the mud.

DG is a football guy, this is way out of his lane and hopefully we never have to deal with a situation like this again.

"Was suspension another option?" (In regards to Hardy taking the option of this voluntary leave)

 

Gettleman sighs heavily, looks visibly distraught (at the situation, not the question), takes a few moments,

 

"Not from us.  Not from us."

 

Reading between the lines, which isn't something I normally like to do but it seems very apparent to me in this case, Gettleman seems to feel this is all BS and Hardy is getting effed in the a.  One also might could draw conclusions as to Gettleman's feelings on Hardy's innocence in the legal matter from his reply (which would obviously have implications with regards to Hardy's future here).

Hardy is getting paid a million dollars week. I seriously doubt our GM feels sorry for him. Most likely he is sorry the Panthers ever drafted Hardy in the first place.
