6 years, $150,250,000, $54,000,000 guaranteed, Projected contract for Cam

When you have the best D in the league all you need is a game manager.

One reason why paying cam that money would be hard to swallow

The panthers D is not invincible. As was shown last year against the patriots and even the seahawks vs the chargers . There are times when even the best D's will fail and that is when guys like Cam can take over like he did last year. You think some average qb wins against the patriots last year when they were scoring at will?

The cap is $133 million this year. Some are projecting that it will increase to $145 million (2015) and $160 million (2016). A contract that is back loaded would be perfectly fine in this scenario, where we pay closer to 30 million in year 6 and 20 million in year 1. By the time 6 years comes about the cap number should increase by about 40-50 million on the conservative end if numbers start to tail off.

People need to take a chill pill!  The NFL increases their cap every year and also this team has so much dead money from people not on this team and Deangelo's and Stewart's contracts that we could sign everyone to a brand new shiny contract when the time comes for Luke, KB, Star, Short and who everelse. This is what Gettlemagic realizes, so he is doing the best that he can in the short term to allow for this team to have a future with these superstars in the making.

In Gettleman I Trust.

Stop saying we rely on our run game. Cam is our run game. Without his rushing yards we are in the middle-back of the pack.

Exactly!

Carolina hasn't had a reliable run game since Cam's Rookie season. And even that year, Cam's passing is what opened up the run game later in the year as the backs got space.

I love how some fans (just like how we criticize the national media) love to define Cam based off of one season (last year).

When are we ever going to get it through out thick heads, the WR options last year were not good. Hopefully this year (and so far two games have shown this), the offense will pick up with better options. They may not be all stars. But that shows how bad the group was last year. In the NFL, things rarely stand still or remain constant. The Panthers need more offense/explosion to be better in the playoffs. And so far (granted a small sample) they have been.

And if a Panther fan, couldn't realize (even/especially) last year how much Cam meant to their offense, then one would really have to question their football analysis skills.

If MJ is still in his ear at all about advice and what to do in his career, hopefully he is telling him 'money isn't everything...becoming a legend will make you last forever'.

If I recall, MJ never took an insane deal...all he wanted was rings and look at how successful he was...lets hope cammy cam listens.

I get your point. But we also have to remember, MJ was making about $30 mil a year from Nike and his other endorsements, so could afford to.

I know Cam makes his money off the court as well. However, I don't think he's in MJ territory yet to be able to take a hometown deal. Plus, we have to remember, Cam's been underpayed the past 4 seasons (including this one).

Stop saying we rely on our run game. Cam is our run game. Without his rushing yards we are in the middle-back of the pack.

And if you take AP'stats out of Minnesota rushing totals they are terrible.

Cam is part of our rushing game, a big part. Can't just remove his numbers and then talk about how terrible it is.

Because Cam has not proven to win in the clutch.

There is a chance we could be strapping the franchise and Cam never deliver post season results.

I think Cam will do that soon. But there is a chance.

I would prefer to wait to pay him mega bucks until he takes that next level

Patriots and Saints victories last year were clutch victories. GTFOH, you really have no clue whatsoever what you are talking about. Stop spewing crap. And has been said before NFL QB contracts are not predicated on post season success no matter how hard you try to debate that it is. GM's give guys like Dalton who have had no post season success their contract because A) it is hard finding playmaking qbs and b they believe that eventually guys like Dalton will get it done. The same will go for Cam even if he loses in the first playoff game again this year.

I don't know if they are just State fans or whatever, but it is undeniable how terrible Rivers has been last two seasons

I respect your football knowledge, but have you completely lost your mind?

Rivers is playing the QB position as well as anyone not named Manning right now.  Rivers had two "down" years in which he passed for 26 and 27 TD's.

He is in the top 4 in all time QB rating...with a couple guys named Manning, Rodgers, and Young above him.

Manning

Rivers

Rodgers

Brees

Ryan

Brady

Cam

That's how I'm breaking them down right now.

We aren't a running team. We use the pass to set up the run.

Bingo!

The last time the Panthers had any semblance of a run game, was during Cam's rookie season when the pass set up the run.

It appear too many Panther fans have loving memories of Double Trouble, mistakenly calling the Panthers a "running team" as the media erroneously does. Even in "I" and traditional running formations, the Panthers RB's can't reliably get yardage.

Fact: Newton's first two seasons, the Panthers ran more than they threw. OK. Many of you are going to say "Chud".

Well, even last year, it was about even. And the Panthers had a god awful WR group.

This year, I expect the Panthers to throw more. You can throw, and still control the clock you know. One season (last year) doesn't define the Panthers. And if/when  you pay Cam all that money, you better throw the ball, because that's where your $$ will be invested (plus have JStew and D'Angelo's ridiculous contracts off the Panther books).

    • It all sounds great. The only unknowns are injuries and how they will need to be addressed. Horn has a history as does the newly added Jaelen Phillips and Cooker has yet to play an entire season as well. And then there are the Ikey's - totally unexpecteded injuries that put a major wrench in your plans. I do think its a great plan though.
    • If we pay Bryce like a franchise QB we're completely and utterly buttfuged.
    • In my view, the realistic expectation for this team to compete will start 2027.  At that time, I think we could be looking at the following (this is HIGHLY speculative):   QB:  You know, Bryce.  I am not a fan, but they don't ask me.  But there is reason for hope--and here it is.  Bryce will be entering his prime.  Since we are likely to pay him, there will be changes that I include throughout this exercise--I realistically speculate on what they are going to do with Bryce and then I realistically speculate on what means in terms of the cap and other positions. Bryce HAS IMPROVED.  The idea is that if you give him more weapons and protection, that will continue.  His career:   At this rate, if his growth continues, by 2027 we should expect nearly 30 TDs and about 12 Interceptions and a Rating of about 98.  His completion percentage should settle at 65-66% or so.  If that happens, you can win with it. The following stats demonstrate how the Panthers will be able to afford it (and re-sign Ickey) My guess is they will require about $60m per year. This is why rookies who can play are important.  It also helps us see the blueprint.  You may disagree, but this is the cruel realities of the salary cap. Robert Hunt:  Cut post June 1 and save $19m.  Who do you replace him with?  Ickey. Tershawn Wharton:  Cutting him saves nearly $15m.  We should all hope to see Aaron Hall (UDFA) make the roster and play well.  Regardless, this is a position we would likely have to address in the next draft. Trevin Moehrig:  Cutting Moehrig as the starting SS saves this team $16.5m.   Ransom will be on year 3 of a cheap rookie deal and should be more than ready to take the reins.  their styles are similar.  Furthermore, FS Wheatley (R, 4th round) will be starting. Taylor Moton:  So much depends on his knee, but I have an idea that he can play another 3 years.  extending him could save the team about $5m per year.  Cutting him outright would save the team about $21m. In the most drastic situation, we have to cut Moton and the other three players mentioned.   We would need (in all likelihood) a starting DT and RT.  It is possible that the DE would be addressed, but Wharton's production (so far) could be equaled by a rookie.  Look for a cut free agent and a 2027 draft pick here.  If you cut Moton, you save $21m, and that would be the only big hole to fill.  Having Ickey at RG gives you some depth at T, and Ickey could be the guy.  T could be pick in the 2027 draft (first round), fwiw.  It saves you $21m while costing you $5m, for example. We get younger, creating a core of Freeling, Hecht, and the RT first rounder in 2027) along with Ekownu (second contract in the $15m range, and Lewis, whose contract would be in the $16m range if not extended.)  The OL cuts (Hunt, Moton) would save $40m.  The OL would get younger and still solid with veterans at G.   By cutting Wharton (no brainer if his play stays the same) and Moehrig (good player--but we have Ransom on a rookie contract who would not be that much of a drop off--if any) in addition to Hunt and Moton, we would save over $70m in cap room. We would be able to give Bryce bag  and we would have enough to re-sign Ickey (if the knee is not too risky) to a Guard contract (probably at a discount, coming off that injury).  Furthermore, we could add a RT in the draft (or a RG if Ickey moves to RT) and that would be the only large hole to fill. Correct my logic if you see issues-- On defense, in addition to the aforementioned, Scott ($2m contract) is out, replaced by a 4th round rookie contract. CB Jackson's contract ($7.8m) expires and he is (possibly) replaced by a rookie contract.  At Edge, patrick Jones II's $10m contract expires and he is likely a reserve, and his role is absorbed by Phillips, Scourton, Princely, and possible an UDFA like Isaiah Smith or a 2027 draft pick.   These productive developmental players over the past 2 drafts will pay huge dividends.  On paper, I see the team getting much younger and possibly better while cutting nearly $100m and reallocating that money to get more production.
