Just putting this out there for a little perspective:

 

October 19th, 2003. 

 

Who can forget that day?  As a team the Panthers were hot, playing well with a vaunted defense with perhaps the best front 7 in football.  We were so confident that Kris Jenkins was wearing a Miami Dolphins jersey that week, as a nod that we might be coming for their undefeated season. 

 

Into Charlotte strode the Tennessee Titans, a good team; but also a team that an average Colts defense had held to 7 points in a week 2 blowout loss and Steve McNair had recently dislocated a finger on his throwing hand.  Many fans figured "if they only put up 7 points on Indy then we very well may just shut these fools out"

 

In case you forgot this game, spoiler alert: we didn't shut them out.

 

Nope.  By the 11:00 mark of the 4th quarter we were down 30-3.  We scored a couple late, meaningless TDs, but when the final horn sounded the Titans won that game 37-17.

 

Around 3 months later we were a whisker away from being Super Bowl Champions. 

 

There are a lot of parallels between what happened that game at BOA stadium in 2003 and what happened last night. 

 

However, that game did not define the 2003 Panthers, and this one game won't define the 2014 Panthers

I like the thinking, but you can make analogies a million different ways. You can also do:

 

In 2008 the Panthers were rolling and looking for homefield advantage throughout for the first time. Then they played an SNF game against the Giants and had a crushing loss that was followed up in a few weeks by the Arizona playoff game.

In 2003, the Panthers had the best group of olinemen we've ever had. The whole team all around was solid. We won 5 in a row. We knew that was just a hiccup. We had more hope.

This year, the Panthers have the WORST group of olinemen probably in franchise history. Shula is one of the least creative and most inconsistent OCs in the league. We almost let Tampa come back. We just got killed by a poor Steelers team. Hope is dwindling.

Another dick analogy by me:

 

In 2006, we played the Cowboys on Sunday Night Football when we were 4-3 in Tony Romo's first start. He ended up scorching us and we finished the season 8-8.

 

Yea except those analogies don't really work.  Last nights game wasn't a late season game that came down to the wire in overtime against the Super Bowl champions and #1 overall seed in the playoffs.  Not even a close parallel.  It also wasn't a midseason game where we were hovering around .500  playing against a brand new QB in a season that saw us finish right around where we were in that game...at .500.  Bad analogies are bad.

      These are the three deep throw attempts that Will Levis made in week 12. His first one is a beauty; Levis and Westbrook-Ikhine gets the safety to bite on a deep dig only to go over the top for the score. His second throw is another beauty: a crosser to Calvin Ridley reminiscent of Bryce to XL (though Ridley has noticeably more separation on his route). That's not passing the eye test nor is it confirmed by the data.

      If you go on the PUP list before the season starts, you are gone for the year. If you start the year on the PUP list then you can get off of it. Kind of semantics, but we are putting him on the PUP list now which is before week 1, that’s why people who come off of it aren’t really on the PUP list until week 1, hence you usually hear right before the season that they are “starting the year” on the PUP list. I think PUP list and IR may basically be the serve the same purpose now because you also sometimes hear that if a player is added to the IR before week 1 that they aren’t eligible to come off the IR list for the entire year. Now, everyone added to IR (post week 1) can come off after 4 (or more) games so the PUP list is meaningless since it’s 6 games and starts at week 1. Anyone added to PUP or IR in the preseason is gone for the year.
