Dave Gettleman?

Im sure this has been stated many times in this thread but we truly won't get a feel for what Gettleman is looking for until we get this cap situation that he was given dealt with. We DO know the following:

1. Dline is very important. He will do anything for a great line rotation.

2. Oline size is important. He wants big guys. Don't know how early he feels about drafting oline.

3. Secondary can just plug in guys. Feels like the dline makes the secondary better or worse.

4. Wasn't sure about Cam or anybody from the old regime at the get go and very tight lipped about his feelings.

5. Hard nosed negotiator. Doesn't care about hurting feelings. Will ask and make guys take pay cuts or restructure.

6. Doesn't seem to care too much about personal relationships. This is far different from Hurney who all the players loved(bc he gave them a shitload of money and was too good of guy)

7. Won't reach or overpay

That is all we know. We don't know anything beyond that. As much as some people want to blame him for this year, we can't!! We are only 4 games into the season!! It's too early. Now what happens if we don't have a good season? Do we blame Gettleman? Sure we can, but the fact is he is just one of the reasons. We won't be able to judge until we can get some of these crazy contracts off the books soooo sorry we can't throw him under the bus yet.

Can't even get a pro-bowl caliber OT in the 6th round THANKS ALOT OBAMA

In all seriousness, I can't believe someone wasn't found that's better than Bell. I mean, a ham sandwich is better than Bell.

A fat guy might be more distracted by a sandwich, and slow down to get it.

There are plenty of guys better than Bell, its a matter of if you really want to lock up a free agent OT that's marginally better than bell (but still pretty bad) on a $40-50 million contract. Or if you want to pass on a far superior draft prospect for a really bad OT just because it's a need (even though the guy you'd pick instead that's infinitely better is also a need).

Gettleman is not going to reach for need or overpay for marginal free agent talent. He's going where the value is and thinking longterm. That's how championship teams are built, you have to plan for more than just the very next game on Sunday, and he's got an entire collection of championship rings that prove this approach works.

People are talking like we are taking steps back or he is running the franchise into the ground.

We all know about the terrible cap situation that he inherited.  Honestly though I don't think some really realize how bad it was.  Even if you don't consider the cap its not like the team was being extremely productive.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but when DG took over this job this team had not had a winning season in 4 years.  Also this team has never had back to back winning seasons.

His first year here he cleared out some bad contracts, added a few cheap short term FAs, and we ended up going 12-4.  Last year we had pretty good luck with injuries, a very positive turnover margin, and we won a large percentage of the close games we were in.  All three of those are variables that can easily change.

This year he continued to clear up the cap, added a few more cheap FAs to replace the other ones that we could no longer afford and we have started 2-2.  During that time he has lost one of the best DE in the game to off the field issues.

His QB is injured.

All of the RBs have been injured.

The back up DE that was most likely to be the best replacement for Hardy is suspended for 14 games.

The DE playing on the other side of the line is injured.

One of the best and most underrated LBs in the game has been injured.

Do I think we will go 12-4 this year?  No

Do I think this team is heading in the right direction as a franchise?  Yes

Best case scenario:  We get everyone healthy and fight our way into the playoffs.

Worst case scenario:  We have a losing season, a lot of young guys get experience, and we get some higher draft picks.

Earlier someone said that DG probably gets too much credit for our record last year.  This is probably true.  Likewise if we go 6-10 this year he will probably get too much blame for that.  I think when you judge a GM you have to look at a broader picture over an extended period of time.

He could have mortgaged our future and added some talent this year.  Would that make him a good GM?  Or reckless?

And I understand that, but there are other avenues of finding LTs to at least compete for the job. I'm not a Tar Heel homer (seriously), but James Hurst seems to have been a viable option. That's just one example of an endless list. It's easy to pull players in to at least give them a chance to compete, instead of having this "competition" (I use quotes because, let's be honest, there wasn't a competition) between Bell and Chandler.

Maybe we should've gotten someone last year, let them learn a year behind Gross, then plug him in when he was ready. Instead we got Heavy Feet Bell protecting Cam's blindside and some Canadian dude who looks like he just came from being Chris Hemsworth stunt double in Thor, but has never played at anything near the NFL level in his life.

I'm tired of the Gettleman bashing after 4 games into the season. Last year we started out 1-3 and ended up 12-4. So at least wait until the season is about over before you make these threads otherwise your just jumping to conclusions.

I do believe we can still make the playoffs we are 2-2 and still top the division while playing poorly. We can still fix our problems and turn things around.

Also I want to point out that you don't have to have a great offensive line to go to the Super Bowl. In the past ten years teams with no better than average offensive lines have made it, like the Cardinals in 09, the Steelers have made it and won with bad offensive lines and so has the Packers.

I didn't think this thread would last 18 pages...

To be clear I don't want Gettleman to be fired. I was just saying that he deserves some blame for the slow start to the season and specifically the Oline trouble. He didn't fix our biggest need this offseason which was Oline depth.

Hopefully next offseason he will focus on our Oline and everything else will fall in place.

Lol at the GMan hate. Overall he has done a fantastic job.

However, his fug up(s) are quite big.

The biggest being the complete neglect of the OT situation.

You must do a better job scouting OT's and taking flyers late.

The Hurst pick should have been a complete no brainer. Dude held his own when he went up against Clowney in college.

    • TAMU had such a weird draft. Usually you'd be bragging your ass off about three DL drafted in the top two rounds except that the narrative around all three was about how badly they were misused by TAMU. LOL
    • Many Panthers fans are already excited about second-round selection Nic Scourton for a variety of reasons including but not limited to: the Panthers needed to recharge the position group, Scourton had a late first-round grade according to many (including the Panthers), and he fit this season's modus operandi of stopping the run now and forever. However, Scourton was seen early on as one of the top-3 EDGE guys in this class but fell due to not having quite the season at Texas A&M as he did prior at Purdue (his sophomore season). It's been revealed since then a few different things that speak to that dip in production... Texas A&M, for one, requires each player on their line to be able to hold two gaps. This also explains why we saw low production across the board from the other two TA&M prospects but were still being heavily touted. Scourton was also said to have bulked up to 280lbs in order to fulfill this role and noticeably suffered from it. He's expected to play this season with Carolina at 255 - 260 which is very different from most situations. In most situations, teams are wanting players to gain 15 - 30. Since Scourton is going to be playing at his Purdue weight, I thought it would make sense to dive more into that tape. Y'all... we might have gotten something special... Let's take a quick peek at the stats before we start drooling over some highlights. First, a summary of the last two seasons for Scourton: Second, the game splits: The first thing that pops up for me is how Scourton's sack numbers were cut in half his senior year. We've already pointed out issues with scheme that impacted the TA&M linemen from racking up numbers, but seeing the game splits it's clear that Scourton didn't exactly feast on inferior competition while at Purdue. He had two two-sack games (vs. Michigan (2023 - 2024 champs), Indiana) and a 10-tackle game (vs. Nebraska). I also see the 2024 games where he went up against two top-10 tackles (Will Campbell from LSU + Armand Membou from Missouri) that I watched leading up to the draft.  For those who just want a summary: Scourton looked elite at Purdue and is going to be rotating in often during his rookie campaign. I originally had him penciled in as the second-string, strong-side edge defender behind Clowney but I wouldn't be surprised to see the team have him and Pat Jones II moving around when they rotate in in order to find where Nic looks best. Here's a highlight reel to replace that Cialias you lost in your recliner tonight:   For those that want a little more: Below I'll be linking the linking the five games I've mentioned above. If you plan to watch all of them, I highly recommend going in the order listed as that will allow you to see him vs. Campbell and then Membou while dealing with the aforementioned things he dealt with at Texas A&M before seeing him look unstoppable in 2023 when he was allowed to play both at a comfortable weight and in a scheme that didn't require him two cover two gaps nearly every play. vs. Will Campbell (2024) vs. Armand Membou (2024) vs. Nebraska (2023) vs. Michigan (2023)   vs. Indiana (2023)
    • Yea, i honestly think he had almost as much say as Dan.  One of the main reasons I think that is Eager has said before he was ever with the Panthers, that you trade away picks for a qb and for any other position you do pick swaps, and that's exactly what we did.
