Rivera: Panthers Tempted to Unleash Cam?

if "unleash cam" means an end to "let's run the ball a lot because that's our philosophy" i'm down for it. offensive balance is essential, but when you're taking plays from cam newton, who will make them, and putting them in the hands of darren reaves, who will not, just to fulfill the quota set by your philosophy, then you end up losing football games, or only winning them when your defense plays like world champs.

if "unleash cam" means "let cam do what he does best and design your philosophy around potentially the best offensive player of all time" then yes for the love of god unleash cam newton

Yes yes yes

The mark of a good OC is staying within your base system but taking the pieces you are given and adapting your game plan and play calling to mask your weaknesses and exploit your strengths...

Mike Shula can do none of these things.

Hard for any OC to scheme around bad T play at both spots, bad G play at both spots. Our All Pro C can't even look decent bc of the slop around him.

You can scheme around slow WRs, weak RBs, or weak QB play with a decent line and other talent. When your line is utter poo you get screwed.

Some say the quick pass game should be emphasized but that is essentially a new offense and one that plays against the strengths of your 3 best offensive players in Cam, Olsen and alba

What do u want Shula to do?

Cam Newton has not been the Panthers' problem, and I refuse to let Rivera imply that he is. This "unleash Cam" nonsense is just coach speak for saying it's someone else's fault mainly, not his. No, Ron, if your first thought is trying to make Newton do more instead of fixing an o line that can't help you run or pass, then you're the main problem.

Don't dare try to set it up for Cam to be the reason you fail this year instead of you and Gettleman. Others may be stupid enough to buy it, but I'm not.

What would your Bears defense be doing to Carolina's current line, you fool? Cam would've been decapitated by you guys. That's how you should be thinking about it.

The "unleash" Cam comment is ONLY about wanting him to run more.  They have been trying to hold him back from doing that because they didn't think he was healthy enough.

Anyone that can read that statement and think anything different is just looking for a reason to hate the coaching staff/FO.

Bingo! :thumbsu:

Couldn't agree stronger.

Cam is playing very well right now. He one of the few Panther bright spots, along with the receivers. So why make him the focus? IF Cam was playing poorly, then I could see Rivera saying, "we need to unleash Cam". That would make more sense (further injuries be damned). However, it doesn't fit the current context in my opinion.

Why not improving other areas of the team (by scheme, player personnel, or coaching changes)?

Yeah, we know that's what it means.

However, it's still camouflaging the underlying issue, which is the players and coaching staff are not earning their pay checks.

Why talk about "unleashing Cam", when he's already playing well, doing enough to win? So now we want to make his role even bigger, when he's not 100% healthy, and he's already doing enough?

No! How about the coaches and the others guys (as I've been saying) earning their paychecks?

They are already giving us plenty of reasons to do that, one winning season has just kept it on hold.

I'm at a loss as to why the O line is not even mentioned as a problem by RR. It's as if the coaches have their fingers in their ears shouting la la la la I can't hear you!

The irony is: The more load they place on Cam (especially if he's not 100%, and/or is trying to accelerate his--mostly--pure pocket QBing), the more likely he would want to leave, knowing the teams not going to support/surround him, while Cam gets blamed by the national media for the team not doing well.

Probably because Cam wants to be "unleashed'.  The fans want to see "Cam be Cam".  The offense has been hampered because one of our biggest threats (Cam running) has been non existent.  Rivera and everyone knows what a difference maker he is when he runs.  His role isn't getting bigger, it's going back to the way the offense was originally designed before his injury.

I'm sure Rivera knows the O-line is playing poorly.  Should he publicly blast them at a press conference?  Will that fix things?
