Can we ever become a great team with Rivera at the helm

Look at the Cowboys. They aren't that much more talented than they were last year when their defense was horrendous. Obviously they got a new coordinator in there and Garrett doesn't have his hands on his defense, but it shows you don't need top flight talent everywhere to succeed. Defense is suppose to be Riveras bread and better and I would like to think we have more talent on defense than Dallas (obviously their run game helps in terms of defense), yet we can't even be average. Hardy is a great player, but one guy doesn't suddenly make you a bottom 5 defense.

If Rivera had half of brain, he would have realized his defense wasn't that good this year, and stop having so much faith in it.

He keeps thinking 2014 is 2013. And it's obviously not!

I think you need the horses to be great. We lost horses from last season bc of cap and age. We are not great anywhere on this team except Lber and QB.

Keep in mind in three years time Rivera and McD did have a top 3 defense from a putrid last place type Defense the years before. Also rivera got really good coordinators in Chud(had a top 10 offense) and McD...im not quite sure why Rivera is hanging his hat on Shula with such loyality. Shula taints my own defense of Rivera. I do not see him as one of the problems however.

This season is a step back..but i think it was clear to most that the signings of Harper, Avant and Cotch were nothing more than temp band-aids bc of the roster defection. The Oline is patchwork and to top it off we lost Hardy. The fact we are leading the NFCS and .500 speaks volumes that Rivera is NOT the problem.

Sorry but no one can give a rah rah speech to overcome the teams talent void.

Yes, but he just like every coach needs talent. We have a quarter of our cap in 3 player that have done nothing and are in the past. Until we expelle the bad the good will not come. Hurney and JR were two people who were bad for each other. Two people who left us with little talent and little cap room.

If you asked this question after game 2 everyone would say yes. Of course everyone's pissed at him after a blowout loss but in reality it isn't his fault we're losing. Could he be better? Absolutely. But it's not even close to all his fault.

For what it is worth, if Fox landed in...let's say Tampa Bay or Jacksonville, you think he would be having the same success?

Just askin'.

I think we would have been better off than we are now with Fox. Most likely, we would have a different defensive scheme and different offensive play....Fox would have done something different....anything different would be a good thing..not saying he is great and all but just something..please!!!

You're entitled to you opinion brother.  Just asking a question.  Not sure at this moment if I am positive on anything about this team except that I am confused as hell about the defense's apparent lack of even minimal performance/effort.

I have a theory but just don't want to believe it.

Carry on.

To those that say they would like Foxball. No to Fox. We already tried that miserable era once. His success is purely a result of having Manning under center. Yes Rivera is a lot like Fox. I don't care for either one to be my teams head coach.

Sure we can, look at his big brother in Denver.

But we have to stop paying players who are not producing big bucks

Hardy $13,116,000

Big Money $11,220,000

Stew  $4,585,000

D-Will $6,000,000

Tolbert $3,350,000

Godfrey $3,168,750

Bell $2,187,000

Amini $1,346,483

Decoud $1,353,750

Harper $1,440,625

That is 46 mil cap hit for players that right know are not producing anywere near those numbers. That will not win you any championships. In fact its crazy we can win anything with this poo. That is almost a third of our entire cap....

    • No saying he mostly sucks is saying that he doesn’t suck the minority of the time.   Like if he took 17 tests and had a couple of really good showings and a handful of pretty good scores sprinkled in among the typical sub par results.   Like a golfer who went out and shot an 89.  There will be some real nice shots sprinkled in there but at the end of the day it is still 89.
    • It's worth mentioning... Game 1: Oct 11 in Raleigh. 4-3 OT win with a complete starting lineup. Game 2: Dec 13 in Philly. 4-3 SO win without Jaccob Slavin. Game 3: Dec 14 in Raleigh. 3-2 SO win with a complete starting lineup. Game 4: Apr 13 in Philly. 3-2 SO loss with the AHL roster.  Those early season games were no indication of the Canes team that finished the season. Miller and Ehlers were still trying to figure things out, Nikishin was still a work in progress and the Stankoven line was just another line. Make no mistake, the Canes team Philly will see is nothing close to what they saw at any point in the season. If the top line starts producing, Freddie stays hot and the blue line does what it does, this could be a sweep as well.
