Clinton Portis on WFNZ yesterday....

I know you were being serious, which is why I dismissed the question as irrelevant. What's the point of "NAMING A NAME" just to drag the conversation down to one or two players as if any one or two players that I would've named would change the fact that Gettleman has not made the o-line a priority.

The answer to that question has ZERO to do with the situation, therefore, it was dismissed. I don't need to prove squat to you about what I know. You want a name to try to make a determination about my knowledge, as if either my knowledge or your determination matters. What you think changes nothing about Gettleman not making protecting "Cam" a priority. He hasn't.

Translation = you have no idea.

But we already knew that.

NFL salaries don't work like the NBA. There are no "max deals" in the NFL.

In the Hornets case, Shinn was penny pinching because he was cheap. J.R. and Gettleman are penny pinching solely out of necessity and, you could argue, for the purpose of signing Cam after some major cuts this coming offseason.

Just as you can spin things into "Cam is leaving" I can say the front office has made it clear that Cam's money and help is on the way provided they get through another lean year of Hurneys mess.

Exactly. Mourning sounded sincere when he said Shinn forced him out and he truly loved Charlotte and wanted to be a part of a dynasty here. I believe him.

Perfect really that we may get to have our cake and eat it too. Division champs, winning record, playoffs, shot at the whole thing, and if we don't win a playoff game, pick 21st where we can fleece a moronic team like the saints for a 3rd round pick so they can move up to draft a midget while we get the OROY at 28. I like it.

I'll take a bad year if it sets us up for a good long run.

Not talking about 'tanking' (that doesn't happen in the real world, only in fan imaginations) but I do think the circumstances could work out in our favor long term.

How awful would it be to lose another marquee player to Chicago

Cinncinati, Dallas, Arizona, Chicago, Buffalo, Cleveland; Miami, Denver(ONLY WHEN MANNING RETIRES!), Saint Louis, Kansas City, Tennesee.

All these teams would be potential FA spots for Cam. ARI, CIN, DAL, CHI, BUF being strong contenders.

Just because franchise QBs haven't pulled a LeBron yet doesn't mean it will never happen. Time will tell.

Tagging him would be pointless. If it comes to that, just let him leave and get a decent compensatory draft pick in return. Forcing a franchise QB to stay when he doesn't want to is a recipe for an awful season.

Why is it pointless?

Can will still want a huge pay day. And signing a tag just to play awful is not a recipe to get it anywhere.

His choice is really a $17M tag or some $70M guaranteed and probably just as much non guaranteed.

He stays.

this sounds like the classic boyfriend/girlfriend that is constantly worried their SO is going to leave

can't spend your life worrying about that, and BESIDES we will franchise tag him for years and if he truly does want to leave we will trade him for a king's ransom

I'm just going off 25 years of Charlotte pro sports that tells me the only superstar we've ever been able to resign was Steve Smith. Literally all others left in their prime or right after their prime with plenty of good years left.

We'll see. All I know is that the city of Charlotte is almost never able to keep a star of Cam's stature. Cam has no loyalties to Charlotte, Atlanta is the anti-Charlotte if anything. And he's seen how much of a total win it's been for Smith this year after he was cut and signed elsewhere. I hope he stays, but I think if he does leave, this will be the week we can look back at and say we saw it coming.

Ja'Wuan James was picked about where we could expect to pick even without a playoff win, Jason Verrett about where we'd pick with a single playoff win, and Bradley Roby was picked about where we'd pick if we do catch fire at the right time, get our franchise DE back, and make it to Glendale. All amazing scenarios for us and why not considering our amazing fortune in the draft since Cam.

"Cam Newton" is a different animal. You can talk about "evaluating" Smith or the offensive line and get away with it not blowing up in the media. You can't say the same thing about "Cam Newton," or appear to be doubting him.

Look at how the "7 second pause" story took off. That's what he didn't expect to happen. If there's anything we can be sure he's learned, it's not to make that mistake again.

The media went into a complete frenzy when he said that about Smitty.  You don't remember that?  Matter of fact, you still can't find a ton of articles from the media that don't bring him up in some way or another.

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
