Bad Hurney Contracts: Who's Left?

Mr. Scot

I think we can open up even more cap room by designating CJ a post-June 1 cut. Think it would be around $10m or so. However, we won't have that cap space until after June 1st when all the good FA players will be gone anyway. Might be worth it to stick it out for one more year at $20m, given that CJ when healthy is still a good to great DE. After next season CJ's dead money is only ~$4m. That would open up $11m in cap space for the 2016 offseason.

I think the likely scenario is keeping CJ for one more year, letting Hardy walk, and designating DeAngelo as a post-June 1 cut. I'm not a cap guru by any means, but I believe that will open up roughly $16m of cap space.

Then following next season we cut CJ (opens up $11m in cap space) and J-Stew (as post-June 1) and we are finally free of Hurney's tyranny.

Letting Hardy walk doesn't automatically free up 13m in cap space. That would assume the rest of the roster is staying the same and nobody else's cap number is changing. We have 130 million committed to salaries already next year and that is without Hardy on the books.

Also that 130million doesn't include practice squad, IR, or draft picks. We are probably closer to 135m. All of this is before the Godfrey release. I haven't had time to look at those numbers yet.

Ah yeah, you're right. I was double counting Hardy. So if we keep CJ and release DeAngelo we only get about $3m in extra cap space. Looks like we currently have $10m in cap space (http://overthecap.com/salary-cap-space). Cutting Godfrey nets us $1.1m in cap space in 2015 (cutting him saved $4.1m, but adds $3m dead money).

So if we keep CJ and cut D-Will, we'd have about $14m in total cap space. If we cut CJ that would give us $20m.

We all know about CJ and the RB's, that's been discussed to death. But the numbers for both Kalil and Davis are much too high as well. I'm sorry, but 10 million allocated to a 4-3 OLB and over 11 million for a center are just crazy numbers. Neither of those are considered critical positions in today's NFL.

Gettleman has some very tough decisions to make. I expect he is going to become less popular around here short of us winning a Super Bowl.

I do think Kalil actually could wind up being a cap casualty.

Hate it because he's absolutely one of the best in the league and how can you not love Ryan Kalil, but it's a business and yeah, his cap figure is high.

We'd save $4.5m by cutting Thomas Davis, but considering the state of our secondary, we need Luke and TD to cover them up. I think it's more likely Davis either restructures or takes a pay cut. It's also the last year of his contract next season.

I think Kalil will be fine - he's hampered by the total slop around him. When we had Velasco and Turner alongside him vs Cincy, he looked pretty good. Also, it'd actually cost us about $300k in cap space to cut Kalil this offseason. Doesn't really make sense to cut him when he's the only guy on the offensive line worth anything.

Kalil isn't a bad contract. Center is an important position. The problem is with the players around him.

Kalil isn't a good contract either. Looking at an OL big picture....the money on good lines isn't at C.

I didn't say cut Kalil either.....but he is another one of Hurney's big contracts. Too big IMO

Uhhhh, if we let Kalil go we may as well pack Cam's bags too. Ryan isn't going anywhere.

It's a business, and if we think that we can get a rook or a younger player on the cheap and use his money to shore up the OL, he may have to go.

As Cam progresses, he won't need Kalil quite as much, and that could help us out.

I fully understand how important those guys are to the team. And we will likely have to extend or restructure Kalil and or Davis to provide short term relief at the expense of giving us less flexibility in the future. But from a business model standpoint, it is ridiculous to allocate 11 million to the center position and 2 million to the left tackle position.

We had better hope like hell the cap takes a big jump over the next 2 years to help us clean up this mess.

Considering the current state of our OL, if you cut your center who is considered one of the best in the league, that's pretty much sending the message to your QB that you really don't give much of a poo about his health. Gettleman may be a bit ruthless, but he isn't a moron.

Ryan Kalil is one of my favorite Panthers of all time.  Arguably our best lineman ever (Jordan Gross is really the only other option in that debate).

That said, yeah I could see him being replaced.  Would hate it, but i could understand it.

The meltdown here would be epic if it happens.

That 10m in cap space is a bit misleading for a lot of people. They get excited and think we can sign some quality tackle for 10m. In reality that 130m number is only for 40 players. That 10m has to cover adding 13 players to the roster.

Also you have to save some money for practice squad(1m), IR(2m), and draft (2m).

If the cap increases to 140m and if we roll over 6m that gives us a cap of 146m.

Right now we have close to 135m committed. (Before Godfrey release).

So we have around 11m to spend for 13 roster spots.

If the cap doesn't go up we have 4m for 13 players. Which isn't enough even if we fill all of those spots with UDFA rookies.
